The Śaiva Deities of the Directions in the Light of Two Recently Discovered Consecration Deposits (Peripih) from central java

This article returns to the question of the & Sacute;aiva deities of the points of the compass in premodern central java in the light of archaeological and epigraphical evidence, namely the recently excavated, ca. 9th-10th century ritual deposits of Candi Kimpulan and Ringinlarik, which include most notably a golden lotus and inscribed gold foils laid within stone caskets. By comparing these new findings with relevant Old javanese inscriptions and transmitted literature, as well as similar material and textual evidence from the wider Indic world (i.e., South and Southeast Asia), the authors will describe the system of twenty-four plus two protective deities surrounding the central deity (& Sacute;iva) that appears to have been prevalent in central java, and which largely agrees with the one hypothesized by Acri and Jordaan (2012) on the basis of the analysis of the reliefs of Candi & Sacute;iva in Loro Jonggrang, Prambanan. Further, the results of an analysis of the material component of the gold foils are discussed.

Perception of volcanic eruption as agent of change on Merapi volcano, central java

Events like volcanic eruptions challenge equilibrium models of nature. This is a study of the perceptions of eruptions as agents of change, taking Mt. Merapi in central java as a case study. Villagers living on Merapi have developed a system of religious belief, and a system of agro-ecological practices, that 'domesticates' the volcanic hazard. The villagers view eruptions as agents of change, often change for the good. The Indonesian government, on the other hand, technologizes and exoticizes the volcanic hazard, and conceptually and materially separates it from the realm of civil society. The state focuses its attention exclusively on intermittent moments of heightened volcanic activity, whereas the villagers focus their attention on the much longer interim periods when there is little or no such activity. This case study shows that not just the perception of risk, but the very concept of risk itself can vary. The cultural production of such concepts co-evolves with natural patterns of perturbation. Imaging fluid-related subduction processes beneath central java (Indonesia) using seismic attenuation tomography

We use local earthquake data observed by the amphibious, temporary seismic MERAMEX array to derive spatial variations of seismic attenuation (Q(p)) in the crust and upper mantle beneath central java. The path-averaged attenuation values (t*) of a high quality subset of 84 local earthquakes were calculated by a spectral inversion technique. These 1929 t*-values inverted by a least-squares tomographic inversion yield the 3D distribution of the specific attenuation (Q(p)). Analysis of the model resolution matrix and synthetic recovery tests were used to investigate the confidence of the Q(p)-model. We notice a prominent zone of increased attenuation beneath and north of the modern volcanic arc at depths down to 15 km. Most of this anomaly seems to be related to the Eocene-Miocene Kendeng Basin (mainly in the eastern part of the study area). Enhanced attenuation is also found in the upper crust in the direct vicinity of recent volcanoes pointing towards zones of partial melts, presence of fluids and increased temperatures in the middle to upper crust. The middle and lower crust seems not to be associated with strong heating and the presence of melts throughout the arc. Enhanced attenuation above the subducting slab beneath the marine forearc seems to be due to the presence of fluids. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

On 22 February 2018 at 08:00 am, a landslide occurred in the dense conserved forest area of the Cigunung Sub-River Basin at Pasir Panjang Village, Brebes Regency of central java Province, Indonesia. The landslide materials transformed into debris and flowed down along the river channel rapidly with a distance of more than 2 km, causing 18 people dead and 14 people injured. About 8.5 ha of farm fields, two bridges, 507 m of the provincial road, and 25 houses were destroyed due to the impact of debris flow. This paper reports the site investigation of Pasir Panjang landslide conducted in early June 2018 which covers geological on-site measurement, soil sampling for laboratory tests, and mapping using the unmanned aerial vehicle. Results imply that the source of Pasir Panjang landslide came from a highly weathered layer of volcanic breccia which fails from a steep slope. The landslide materials then entrained weathered tuffaceous sandstone and volcanic breccia layers along the river bank. Hydro-meteorological data shows that the two series of antecedent rainfalls in 10 consecutive days may generate the excess pore water pressure and high saturation condition within the landslide and debris flow area. The balancing depth of saturated soil layer then calculated to estimate the pore water pressure by using the slope infiltration distributed equilibrium model at each time interval of rainfall. We used the LS-RAPID numerical model to simulate the integration of failure mechanism of Pasir Panjang landslide and its debris motion behavior. The simulation results show that the slope fails from the unstable area of approximately 28,000 m(2) with the velocity around 13-14 m/s and the maximum depth of 25-26 m. The landslide materials transformed into debris when hit the provincial road with the velocity of more than 30 m/s and traveling down rapidly to the farm field and civilization area. This research aims to understand the extent of microplastic contamination in Pekalongan waters, central java, and its potential impact on fishing grounds, aligning with Indonesia's National Action Plan for Handling Marine Debris 2018-2025. The study employs a 2D hydrodynamics modelling approach with Mike 21 Software to map the spatial distribution of microplastic movement concerning fishing areas during the west and east monsoon seasons. The results showed that microplastic particles follow tidal currents in Pekalongan waters, with their movement influenced by factors such as current, wind, and tidal conditions. The trajectory of microplastics entering fishing ground areas poses potential contamination risk for fish caught by fishermen, threatening the health of marine ecosystems and the stability of their structure and function.

We present a three-dimensional model of the distribution of S-wave velocity in the upper crust to a depth of 20 km beneath central java based on the analysis of seismic ambient noise data recorded by more than 100 seismic stations in 2004 associated with the MERAMEX project. To invert the Rayleigh wave dispersion curves to construct 2-D group-velocity maps and 3-D distributions of S-wave velocity, we have used a new tomographic algorithm based on iterative linearized inversion. We have performed a series of synthetic tests that demonstrate significantly higher resolution in the upper crust with this model compared to the local earthquake travel-time tomography (LET) model previously applied for the same station network. Beneath the southern flank of Merapi, we identify a large low-velocity anomaly that can be split into two layers. The upper layer reflects the similar to 1 km thick sedimentary cover of volcanoclastic deposits. The deeper anomaly at depths of similar to 4-8 km may represent a magma reservoir with partially molten rock that feeds several volcanoes in central java. Beneath the Merapi summit, we observe another low-velocity anomaly as deep as 8 km that may be associated with the active magma reservoir that feeds the eruptive activity of Merapi. In the southern portion of the study area, in the lower crust, we identify a low-velocity anomaly that may represent the top of the pathways of volatiles and melts ascending from the slab that was previously inferred from the LET model results. We observe that this anomaly is clearly separate from the felsic magma reservoirs in the upper crust.

Integration Sentinel-1 SAR data and machine learning for land subsidence in-depth analysis in the North Coast of central java, Indonesia

The escalating issue of land subsidence poses a critical threat to the economic prosperity of Indonesia's North Coast in central java. This recurring phenomenon intensifies annual tidal floods, posing a severe threat to the infrastructure, buildings, coastal zones, land quality, and the livelihoods of local communities. Effective monitoring of land subsidence rates is essential to mitigate these impacts and implement pre-emptive measures. This study addresses this challenge by employing a two-pronged approach: measuring subsidence rates and assessing susceptibility. Over six years (2016-2021), the research utilizes SAR Sentinel-1 data coupled with machine learning algorithms to achieve these goals. The subsidence rates are generated by the time series InSAR SBAS method. Land subsidence susceptibility assessment uses algorithms such as Random Forest (RF), Gradient Boosted Trees (GTB), Classification and Regression Trees (CART), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Trees with Bagging Method (MD), and K-Nearest Neighbours (KNN). An exhaustive assessment utilizing K-fold cross-validation, incorporating five folds with an 80% training and 20% validation split, effectively facilitates the identification of the model exhibiting the highest accuracy. The findings reveal significant spatial variations in land subsidence rates. Semarang, Pekalongan, and Jepara experienced the highest rates (ranging from - 13 cm/year to -5 cm/year) based on SAR Sentinel-1 data. Machine learning model evaluation yielded Overall Accuracy values of 0.761 (RF), 0.766 (GTB), 0.65 (CART), 0.456 (SVM), 0.359 (KNN), and 0.541 (MD). Based on this analysis, the RF and GTB algorithms are recommended for mapping land subsidence susceptibility. Additionally, the study identified influential factors, with distance from boreholes being the most significant influence. This research focuses on providing information related to the damaging effects of the 2010 eruption of Merapi volcano in central java, Indonesia. This information will be used to help emergency responders to assess losses more timely and efficiently, and to monitor the progress in emergency response and recovery. The objectives of this research are: (a) to generate a map of pyroclastic deposits based on activities pre- and post-volcano eruption of 2010 in the research area, (b) to investigate the impact of volcano eruption on the environment, and (c) to assess the impact of volcano eruption on landuse. ALOS PALSAR remote sensing data pre- and post-disaster were used in this research for mapping the volcano eruption. Topographic and geomorphological maps were analyzed for profiling and field orientation, which were used to investigate the impact of volcano eruption on the environment. SPOT 4 satellite images were used in this research for updating landuse information from the topographic map. The result of the landuse updated data was used for assessment of the volcano eruption's impact on landuse with the GIS raster environment. The volcanic eruption that occurred in 2010 is estimated to have an impact of 133.31 ha for settlements, 92.32 ha for paddy fields, 235.60 ha for dry farming, 570.98 ha for plantations, 380.86 ha for bare land, and 0.12 ha for forest areas. An estimate of the number of buildings damaged due to the volcano eruption in 2010 was carried out by overlaying a map of pyroclastic deposits and the information point of the building sites from the topographic map. The total number of buildings damaged is estimated to be around 12,276 units.

Scenario-based actions to upgrade small-scale furniture producers and their impacts on women in central java, Indonesia

Indonesian furniture accounts for almost 1% of the global furniture trade, valued at more than USD 135 billion. In many countries, including Japan, European countries and Indonesia, women make decisions about selecting which furniture to buy. In central java's Jepara District - the centre of teak furniture production in Indonesia - annual furniture exports are valued at USD 120 million. However, the roles of small-scale producers and women workers in furniture industry are weak. Though women workers play an important role in generating revenue, they are paid less than men. They are also less powerful and exercise less control over resources, decision making, product development and bargaining. Action research and value chain analysis were used to improve small-scale producers and women workers. This paper explores different scenarios for upgrading small-scale producers, such as participation in trade exhibitions, training programmes and producer associations and their effects on women workers.
