Optimization of chance constraint programming with sum-of-fractional objectives - An application to assembled printed circuit board problem

This paper presents a procedure to solve a chance constraint programming problem with sum-of-fractional objectives. The problem and the solution procedure are described with the help of a practical problem - assembled printed circuit boards (PCBs). Errors occurring during assembling PCBs are in general classified into three kinds, viz, machine errors, manual errors and other errors. These errors may lead to the rejection of the major portion of the production and hence result the manufacturer a huge loss. The problem is decomposed to have two objective functions;one is a sum-of-fractional objectives and the other is a non-linear objective with bounded constraints. The interest is to maximize the sum-of-fractional objectives and to minimize the non-linear objective, subject to stochastic and non-stochastic bounded environment. The first problem deals with the maximization of the profit (maximizing sum-of-fractional objectives) and the second deals with the minimization of the loss (errors), so as to obtain the maximum profit after removing the number of defective PCBs. Robust Fuzzy chance constraint programming for multi-item EOQ model with random disruption and partial backordering under uncertainty

In this paper, a new mathematical model for multi-item Economic Order Quantity model is proposed considering defective supply batches and partial backordering. The proposed model assumes that the supply batches may be defective and can be rejected. The aim is to minimize total inventory costs by determining optimal values of the decision variables including Time interval between successive perfect supply deliveries. Since in real-world situations the main parameters are uncertain, two mathematical programming approaches called: Basic chance constraint programming and Robust Fuzzy chance constraint programming are used to handle uncertain parameters. The performance of the mathematical programming models is investigated in a numerical example. The results show that the RFCCP model is able to provide risk-averse solutions comparing to the BCCP model. In the end, sensitivity analyses are performed to determine the effect of any change in the main parameters on objective function value to determine the most critical parameters

Water quality planning is complicated itself but further challenged by the existence of uncertainties and nonlinearities in terms of model formulation and solution. In this study, a simulation-based inexact two-stage chance-constraint quadratic programming (SITCQP) approach was developed for water quality management. The SITCQP model was a hybrid of two-stage stochastic programming (TSP), chance-constraint programming (CCP), inexact quadratic programming (IQP), and multisegment stream water quality simulation. A water quality simulation model was provided for reflecting the relationship between the pollution-control actions before wastewater discharge and the environmental responses after the discharge. Interval quadratic polynomials were employed to reflect the uncertainties and nonlinearities associated with the costs for wastewater treatment. Uncertainties derived from water quality standards were characterized as random variables with normal distributions. The proposed approach was applied to a hypothetical case in water quality management. The modeling solutions were presented as combinations of deterministic, interval and distributional information, which could facilitate predictions for different forms of uncertainties. The results were valuable for helping decision makers generate alternatives between wastewater treatment and stream water quality management.

This study examines a supply chain optimization model for perishable products, addressing the challenge of demand uncertainty through a hybrid approach that combines blockchain technology with multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods, specifically the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). The model aims to address dual objectives: reducing waste and managing inventory effectively. A crucial aspect of the model is the selection of suppliers, which is vital for mitigating risks related to product failures and delivery issues. Supplier performance management is incorporated to ensure that vendor choices meet various performance criteria. To account for demand uncertainty, the study employs chance constraint programming (CCP) to develop optimization models that incorporate uncertainties and randomness. The research evaluates two scenarios: one with blockchain technology and one without. Blockchain enhances information sharing between manufacturers and retailers, thereby reducing demand uncertainty and improving forecast reliability. The model is validated through a real-world case study of a dairy product manufacturer, with results obtained using the CPLEX solver. Findings reveal that blockchain implementation significantly reduces costs associated with holding, shortages, and production while also improving overall inventory management. Sensitivity analysis is performed to assess the impact of confidence levels on model performance, showing that higher confidence levels result in reduced costs. The study demonstrates the potential of combining blockchain, TOPSIS, and chance constraint programming to enhance supply chain efficiency and suggests future research directions, including the integration of sustainability factors into green production systems.

Adaptive stochastic scheduling of cascade hydropower-photovoltaic power hybrid systems under climate change

The joint operation of cascade hydropower plants with flexible adjustment capacity and photovoltaic power is a reliable and realistic choice for dealing with the problems caused by the high penetration rate of photovoltaic power. However, the power generation capacity of these renewable energy sources will be affected by climate change. Insufficient consideration has been given to the impact by climate change on supply and demand in the hybrid energy systems. Hence an optimization model for the scheduling of CHPV hybrid energy systems is developed to adapt to climate change in this paper. Firstly, the large-scale hydrometeorological data of various Global Climate Models (GCMs) are downscaled, and the combination of GCMs with the best performance of hydrometeorological data in the research area is determined by applying the Taylor Chart method. Secondly, the Latin hypercube sampling and K-means clustering method are used to deal with the uncertainty of the optimal GCM combination data after downscaling. Thirdly, the chance constrained programming based stochastic scheduling model for the CHPV hybrid energy systems is established. Finally, the original model is transformed into a standard MILP model and solved by CPLEX optimization solver. The case study shows that under climate change, CMCC-CM2-SR5&SSP5-8.5, MIROC6&SSP2-4.5 and NorESM2-LM&SSP5-8.5 is suitable to project the monthly mean streamflow, temperature and solar radiation in the future periods, respectively, in Beipan River basin. The power supply guarantee rate of the CHPV hybrid system during the scheduling periods is 75.83 %, and the annual power generation is 4520 GWh. Compared with the individual hydropower operation, the power supply guarantee rate of the hybrid energy system is increased by 13.53 %. It can be concluded that the stochastic scheduling strategy of the CHPV hybrid systems can more effectively hedge the impact of future climate change on power generation scheduling.

Decomposition approaches for block-structured chance-constrained programs with application to hydro-thermal unit commitment

The unit commitment problem, aims at computing the production schedule that satisfies the offer-demand equilibrium at minimal cost. Often such problems are considered in a deterministic framework. However uncertainty is present and non-negligible. Robustness of the production schedule is therefore a key question. In this paper, we will investigate this robustness when hydro valleys are made robust against uncertainty on inflows and the global schedule is robust against uncertainty on customer load. Both robustness requirements will be modelled by using bilateral joint chance constraints. Since this is a fairly large model, we will investigate several decomposition procedures and compare these on several typical numerical instances. The latter decomposition procedures are clearly a prerequisite if robust unit commitment is ever to be used in practice. We will show that an efficient decomposition procedure exists and can be used to derive a robust production schedule. The obtained results are illustrated on a convex simplification of a unit commitment problem in order to avoid the use of heuristics. The investigated decomposition approaches can be applied trivially to a non-convex setting, but will need to be followed by appropriate heuristics. How this may work in practice is also illustrated.

A multiobjective fuzzy stochastic program for water resources optimization: The case of lake management

In many real decision situations more than one objective has to be considered and different kinds of uncertainty must be handled. The uncertainty is generally of two natures: stochastic uncertainty related to environmental data and fuzzy uncertainty related to expert judgement. This paper proposes a fuzzy chance constrained approach to solve mathematical programs integrating fuzzy and stochastic parameters with multiple objective aspects. Our approach is applied to determine reservoirs releases in the Echkeul basin in Tunisia.

A Dynamic Economic Dispatch Model Incorporating Wind Power Based on chance Constrained programming

In order to maintain the stability and security of the power system, the uncertainty and intermittency of wind power must be taken into account in economic dispatch (ED) problems. In this paper, a dynamic economic dispatch (DED) model based on chance constrained programming is presented and an improved particle swarm optimization (PSO) approach is proposed to solve the problem. Wind power is regarded as a random variable and is included in the chance constraint. New formulation of up and down spinning reserve constraints are presented under expectation meaning. The improved PSO algorithm combines a feasible region adjustment strategy with a hill climbing search operation based on the basic PSO. Simulations are performed under three distinct test systems with different generators. Results show that both the proposed DED model and the improved PSO approach are effective.

Ambulance allocation considering the spatial randomness of demand

To guarantee that emergency calls can be responded to in time, the government is obliged to implement an effective ambulance location plan. In practice, emergency medical service (EMS) systems work in an uncertain environment with stochastic demand, response time, and travel time. The uncertainty of these factors significantly affects ambulance location planning. However, most recent studies in this field fail to adequately consider the effect of the spatial uncertainty of demand since it is difficult to describe quantitatively. As a result, most allocation plans are not efficient. In this study, Gaussian mixture model clustering is innovatively utilized to quantitatively describe spatially uncertain demand. Accordingly, the chance constraint programming model for ambulance allocation planning is developed. The objective is to minimize the sum of the cost of patient lives lost and the operational cost of the emergency facilities. Two years of data from the Shanghai Songjiang District are used to validate the proposed method. The data from 2013 are utilized to fit the spatial distribution of demand. The data from 2014 are used to test and verify the obtained models. The experimental results demonstrate that the delay time can be significantly decreased with the proposed methods. Furthermore, compared with other classic assumptions for the spatial randomness of demand in this field, better service performance and lower cost are obtained with the proposed methods.

Reliability Evaluation of a Microgrid Considering Its Operating Condition

Microgrids offer several reliability benefits, such as the improvement of load-point reliability and the opportunity for reliability-differentiated services. The primary goal of this work is to investigate the impacts of operating condition on the reliability index for microgrid system. It relies on a component failure rate model which quantifies the relationship between component failure rate and state variables. Some parameters involved are characterized by subjective uncertainty. Thus, fuzzy numbers are introduced to represent such parameters, and an optimization model based on Fuzzy chance Constrained programming (FCCP) is established for reliability index calculation. In addition, we present a hybrid algorithm which combines scenario enumeration and fuzzy simulation as a solution tool. The simulations in a microgrid test system show that reliability indices without considering operating condition can often prove to be optimistic. We also investigate two groups of situations, which include the different penetration levels of microsource and different confidence levels. The results support the necessity of considering operating condition for achieving accurate reliability evaluation.
