In this paper, we present an adaptive stereo video object segmentation algorithm based on depth and spatio-temporal information. First, the object is extracted from the left channel with a new algorithm, which consists of three steps: depth segmentation, adaptive change detection based on twice frame-difference, and edge modification. Then, an inverse matching operation is proposed for object extraction from the right channel according to the extracted object in the left channel and disparity map. Finally experimental results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm successfully extracts moving objects from various stereo video sequences, even if the objects hold still or move slowly in several frames, and this algorithm can solve the problem of extracting multiple objects overlapped.

Learning concepts that change over time is important for a variety of applications in which an intelligent system must acquire and use a behavioral profile. Computer intrusion detection, calendar scheduling, and intelligent user interfaces are three examples. An interesting class of methods for learning such concepts consists of algorithms that maintain a portion of previously encountered examples. Since concepts change over time and these methods store selected examples, mechanisms must exist to identify and remove irrelevant examples of old concepts. In this paper, we describe an incremental rule learner with partial instance memory, called AQ 11 -PM+WAH, that uses Widmer and Kubat's heuristic to adjust dynamically the window over which it retains and forgets examples. We evaluated this learner using the STAGGER concepts and made direct comparisons to AQ-PM and to AQ 11 - PM, similar learners with partial instance memory. Results suggest that the forgetting heuristic is not restricted to FLORA2 the learner for which it was originally designed. Overall, result from this study and others suggest learners with partial instance memory converge more quickly to changing target concepts than algorithms that learn solely from new examples.

In this paper, we present a new stroke extraction algorithm that integrates all levels of contour information including boundary points, dominant points, corner points, segments, cross section sequence graph, character structure to extract strokes of Chinese characters. In the algorithm, first, the boundary points are extracted, then the dominant and corner points are detected. Third, the character structure including singular and regular regions are extracted by the contour information and a modified cross section sequence graph (CSSG). Finally, a Bezier curve taking dominant points and corner points as inputs is used to check the continuity of strokes. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can correctly extract the strokes up to 95% from a printed and handwritten test samples based on the human perception. This research provides a solid basis for the structural matching of Chinese characters.

Vehicle inspection at ports of entry is a critical component of border security. One part of the vehicle screening process involves customs and border protection (CBP) personnel performing a preliminary inspection of the underside of random vehicles by looking under the vehicle through a mirror mounted on a stick, searching for anomalies or foreign objects present on the undercarriage structure and components of a vehicle. If any deviances are detected, the vehicle is directed to a secondary and more thorough inspection. This paper presents a project that aims at automating this preliminary undercarriage inspection by using an automatic under-vehicle inspection system (AUVIS) and image processing algorithms to assist personnel in identifying vehicles for secondary inspection. The inspection system will image the undercarriage of every car in a lane as they approach the CBP agent and use a novel change detection algorithm to compare the captured image to a corresponding reference image of the vehicle's make and model. The software will detect and highlight any differences between the two images to provide a rapid and objective recommendation for secondary inspection.

Scene is a series of semantic correlated video shots. An effective scene detection depends on domain knowledge more or less. Most existing approaches try to directly detect various scene changes by applying clustering or supervised learning methods to low level audiovisual features. However, robustly detecting diverse scene changes derived from complex semantic meanings is still a challenging problem. In this paper we are focused on the association of visual signal changes (e.g. cuts, fade-in, fade-out, etc.) and audio signal changes (e.g. speaker change, background music change, etc.) to propose a mid-level scene change representation, which is meant to locate candidate scene change points by characterizing temporally uncorrelated properties of audio and visual track in the case of scene change happening. By incorporating domain knowledge, enhanced features can be further extracted to complement this representation to bridge semantic gap towards scene change detection. We utilize a camera motion estimation algorithm to detect visual signal changes. Such visual change positions are selected as time-stamp points. An alignment is performed to search for candidate audio signal change positions by multi-scale Kullback-Leibler (K-L) distance computing. Both metric-based K-L distance approach and model-based HMM are applied to determine true audio signal changes. The associated visual and audio signal changes are considered as the mid-level scene change representation. This representation has been successfully applied to detect boundaries of individual commercial in TV broadcast stream with an accuracy of around 95%. In contrast to many techniques exploiting temporal patterns of traffic from a single network element, network-wide traffic analysis mainly focuses on the spatial behavior across the whole network. This paper proposes a spatial hidden Markov model (SHMM) to learn the normal patterns of network-wide traffic. Combined with topology information, SHMM models traffic volumes on links as probabilistic outputs of underlying interactions between routers. Based on a trained SHMM, a nonparametric CUSUM algorithm is used to track the change of entropy of observation sequences in different sliding windows for anomaly detection. Background traffic collected from real network and synthetic anomalies are used for validation of the detection method. The results prove our method effective for network-wide traffic anomaly detection.

This paper proposes PosPush, a highly accurate location based information delivery system, which utilizes the high resolution 3D locations obtained from ultrasonic positioning devices to efficiently deliver the location based information to users. This system is designed especially for applications where a 3D space is partitioned into a set of closely neighboring small zones, and as a user moves into one of the zones, the corresponding information will be timely transferred to the user. Although a lot of prior work has been focused on Location based Information Delivery (LIDS), most of them are based on very coarse location data to provide proximity-based information delivery. They cannot be exploited for the above-mentioned applications due to the lack of mechanisms to identify the precise zone and to determine the appropriate delivery time. In order to identify precise zones, PosPush defines a zone model by a set of key location points extracted by a location clustering algorithm, and the zone model is used for online zone identification based on hierarchical searching. In order to determine the appropriate delivery time, an Adaptive Window change detection (AWCD) method is proposed to detect the fast change along the location stream. Finally, we describe a prototypical application which deliveries information of commodities on a shelf based on PosPush, and verify the feasibility and effectiveness of our proposed system.

We build on recent fast and accurate 3-D reconstruction techniques to segment objects during scene reconstruction. We take object outline information from change detection to build 3-D models of rigid objects and represent the scene as static and dynamic components. Object models are updated online during mapping, and can integrate segmentation information from sources other than change detection.

Nowadays, there are applications in which the data are modelled best not as persistent tables, but rather as transient data streams. In this keynote, we discuss the limitations of current machine learning and data mining algorithms. We discuss the fundamental issues in learning in dynamic environments like learning decision models that evolve over time, learning and forgetting, concept drift and change detection. Data streams are characterized by huge amounts of data that introduce new constraints in the design of learning algorithms: limited computational resources in terms of memory, processing time and CPU power. In this talk, we present some illustrative algorithms designed to taking these constrains into account. We identify the main issues and current challenges that emerge in learning from data streams, and present open research lines for further developments.

The authors present a statistically based algorithm for the implementation of run-by-run feedback control on a semiconductor manufacturing process. The method is based on a multivariate cumulative-sum statistical process control procedure. This procedure monitors multiple process parameters in order to identify significant deviations from a given target. Once such a deviation is detected, the algorithm uses adaptive response surface models of the process in order to change the equipment settings. This procedure has been used to control the thickness and the photoactive compound concentration of photoresist applied an oxidized silicon wafers. In this application, feedback control is based on inexpensive thickness and reflectance measurements that can be totally automated. The experiments, conducted in the Berkeley Microfabrication Laboratory, show that this method can significantly improve the photoresist application process.< >
