Two new methods for the detection of multiple insertion/deletions are presented. The first method recognises insertions/deletions in the previous symbol stream by extracting additional information from commonly used markers. A new coding method is also presented that relies on the number of transitions in a codeword to detect insertions/deletions in the previous codeword. This coding scheme also has certain spectral properties.

Monitoring its health by detecting its failed sensors is essential to the reliable functioning of any sensor network. This paper presents a distributed, online, sequential algorithm for detecting multiple faults in a sensor network. The algorithm works by detecting change points in the correlation statistics of neighboring sensors, requiring only neighbors to exchange information. The algorithm provides guarantees on detection delay and false alarm probability. This appears to be the first work to offer such guarantees for a multiple sensor network. Based on the performance guarantees, we compute a tradeoff between sensor node density, detection delay and energy consumption. We also address synchronization, finite storage and data quantization. We validate our approach with some example applications.

This paper proposes an algorithm for detecting the video region and improving the video quality on a digital monitor. The proposed algorithm is implemented in the circuit board we developed. The algorithm finds the video region by checking where pixels change on a digital monitor. After detecting the video region, a brightness of the video is improved by using the gamma curve. From the experimental results, the proposed algorithm detects the video region well for any video size and improves the brightness of the video.

This paper presents a detector balancing procedure for a bridge based on the straddling method that is used to calibrate inductive voltage dividers (IVDs). A bridge of this type requires multiple, simultaneous balances, which, due to interactions between the various circuit networks involved, are difficult to achieve in practice. 3D TRUS-guided robot-aided prostate brachytherapy provides tools for dynamic re-optimization of a dose plan by freeing needle insertions from parallel trajectory constraints, i.e., needle trajectories can be positioned with considerable flexibility including oblique. However, oblique insertion results in the needle intersecting the 2D TRUS image and appearing as a dot, leading to blind guidance. Here, we propose a method for oblique needle segmentation and tracking to be used in a 3D TRUS guided and robot aided prostate brachytherapy system. This algorithm applies a grey-level changedetection technique to find the location and orientation of needles from 3D images. Three 2D images containing the needle (oblique sagittal, coronal and transverse planes) are extracted and displayed in near real-time. Testing showed that our algorithm can find 3D needle orientation within 0.54/spl deg/ for a chicken tissue phantom, and 0.58/spl deg/ for agar phantoms, over a /spl plusmn/15/spl deg/ insertion orientation. The execution time averaged 0.13s on a 1.2 GHz computer.

An image stabilization algorithm is presented that is specifically oriented toward video-surveillance applications. The proposed approach is based on a novel motion-compensation method that is an adaptation of a well-known image-stabilization algorithm for visualization in video-surveillance applications. In particular, the illustrated methods take into account the specificity of typical video-surveillance applications, where objects moving in a scene often cover a large part of an image thus causing the failure of classic image-stabilization techniques. Evaluation methods for image stabilization algorithms are discussed.

This paper describes an algorithm for detecting and isolating failures and its application on a multisensor decentralized system. We consider decentralized systems as a network of local processors where communication is performed only between neighbouring nodes. Local observations are taken by each node, and using the information form of the Kalman filter, local information contributions are calculated. These are then communicated and a global estimate is computed. The failure and isolation technique described in this paper is based on the use of multiple models, which describe the changes on the system dynamics when a failure is produced.< >

A dynamic single-source single-destination shortest path problem on a directed graph is considered. The edge lengths are not constant, but they change as a function of time in a random way. The problem is modeled as a multi-stage decision process and solved by using a re-optimization method that solves the /spl iota/.th stage using the results of the solution of the (/spl iota/-1).th one. An algorithm, called the dynamical shortest path algorithm, is proposed for solving the global problem either finding a solution or detecting that the problem is infeasible and an upper bound on its running time is found. Numerical examples are reported in order to show the effectiveness of the method.
