When recording electrical signals from a whole nerve, an increase in the firing frequencies of the fibers contained in the nerve causes an increase in the rectified and time-averaged recorded signal. The latter thus represents superimposed neural activity and can be used for detecting changes in the recorded afferent and/or efferent nerve traffic. The possibility of detecting a fast bladder pressure increase from an increase in the recorded pelvic nerve afferent activity was investigated in this study. Two signal processing approaches were compared: simple discriminant-window thresholding and cumulative sum (CUSUM) algorithm. Both are shown to be able to detect a sudden rise in bladder pressure with the adaptive CUSUM-algorithm being more reliable, but slower.

This paper proposed a novel and efficient scheme to authenticate the H.264/AVC video. The scheme makes an accurate usage of the tree-structured motion compensation, motion estimation and Lagrangian optimization of the standard. Authentication information is embedded strictly based on the best mode decision strategy in the sense that if undergone any spatial and temporal attacks, the scheme can detect the tampering by the sensitive mode change. And the experimental results prove the effectiveness the algorithm against many transcoding and signal processing attacks

In RFID system, because a collision occurs while a reader attempts to identify multiple tags at the same time, the anti-collision algorithm is necessary. This paper uses the tree based algorithm expressed in the form of a B-ary tree, in which the time required to identify all tags varies according to the value of B(Bges2). An increase in the value of B will decrease the number of collision cycles, while increasing the number of idle cycles. In order to solve this problem in previous algorithms, an improved 4-ary query tree algorithm (I4QTA) is suggested. If a collision occurs, the I4QTA uses the bits change method (BCM) to remove idle cycles by only detecting the tag IDs that actually exist. In other words, it can quickly identify all tags by reducing the number of query-responses.

This paper presents a problem of odor source localization in a dynamic environment, which means the odor distribution is changing over time. Most work on chemical sensing with mobile robots assume an experimental setup that minimizes the influence of turbulent transport by either minimizing the source-to-sensor distance in trail following or by assuming a strong unidirectional air stream in the environment, including our previous work. However, not much attention has been paid to the natural environment problem. Modification Particle Swarm Optimization is a well-known algorithm, which can continuously track a changing optimum over time. PSO can be improved or adapted by incorporating the change detection and responding mechanisms for solving dynamic problems. Charged PSO, which is another extension of the PSO, has also been applied to solve dynamic problems. Odor source localization is an interesting application in dynamic problems. We will adopt two types of PSO modification concepts to develop a new algorithm in order to control autonomous vehicles. Before applying the algorithm for real implementation, some important hardware conditions must be considered. Firstly, to reduce the possibility of robots leaving the search space, a limit to the value of velocity vector is needed. The value of vector velocity can be clamped to the range [-V max , V max ]; in our case for the MK-01 Robot, the maximum velocity is 0.05 m/s. Secondly, in the standard PSO algorithm there is no collision avoidance mechanism. To avoid the collision among robot we add some collision avoidance functions. Finally, we also add some sensor noise, delay and threshold value to model the sensor response. Then we develop odor localization algorithm, and simulations to show that the new approach can solve such dynamic environment problems.

Video segmentation is a key operation for MPEG-4 and MPEG-7. It is a computationally intensive task and cannot be afforded by general microprocessors. In this paper, we propose a hardware accelerator for video segmentation. Since most of the core operations of video segmentation algorithms can be mapped to morphological operations, the core of this accelerator is a programmable morphology PE array. With the programmable ability of each PE and the interconnection between them, this accelerator can achieve both high throughput and high flexibility. Simulation shows the proposed hardware accelerator can speed up the most important video segmentation algorithms 20 times to achieve realtime performance and has high programmability with a little hardware cost overhead.

We present a novel approach to change detection based on a coarse-to-fine strategy. An efficient coarse-level detection is proposed that filters out most of the possible false changes, thus attaining reliable and tight coarse-grain super-masks of the truly changed areas. The subsequent fine-level detection can thus "focus the attention" just on the "interesting" parts of the frame and perform a robust selective background updating procedure by considering the complement of these masks. Besides, the analysis of a strip of pixels surrounding each coarse-grain blob allows to infer information on light changes possibly occurring in the blob's vicinity. Although any algorithm can be used as the final fine-level detection, here we show how the approach applies to a particular algorithm we devised, based on a non-parametric statistical modelling of the camera noise.

This paper presents an automatic algorithm for segmenting and extracting moving objects suitable for indoor and outdoor video applications, where the background scene can be captured beforehand. Since edge detection is often used to extract accurate boundaries of the image's objects, the first step in our algorithm is accomplished by combining two edge maps that are detected from the frames difference and background subtraction. After removing edge points that belong to the background, the resulting moving edge map is fed to the object extraction step. A fundamental task in this step is to declare the candidates of the moving object, followed by applying morphological operations. The algorithm is implemented on different kinds of video sequences and good segmentation results are achieved.

changes to the illumination pattern in a digital sun-sensor can dramatically improve the resolution of the device. In this study we use genetic algorithms (GAs) as a heuristic to optimize the illumination pattern for a single-axis digital sun-sensor. The main objective is to determine an illumination pattern that resolves the sun-angle to better than one pixel. A linear-phase super resolution technique is proposed, to evaluate the effective resolution of the illumination pattern determined using GA. Our finding show that patterns with multiple, narrow peaks provide sub-pixel accuracy in resolving the sun-angle. Performance of the proposed GA estimator displayed the evolution of high-fitness solutions. We contend that multiple peak patterns can greatly improve the performance of the sun-sensor when coupled with parametric methods of displacement estimation. The optimal illumination pattern can be implemented by fabricating a replacement aperture mask for the sensor - a change that can be made at minimal cost

Using the Long-Term ST Database, we developed and evaluated an advanced algorithm for automated detection of transient ST segment episodes in "real-world" 24-hour ambulatory data. To successfully detect transient ST change episodes, the algorithm automatically tracks the time-varying ST segment reference level due to clinically not important non-ischemic causes and subtracts it from the ST segment level. Evaluating of the algorithm using reference annotations of the protocol B of the database yielded gross ST episode detection sensitivity and positive predictivity of approximately 75%.

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) run the internal flavor of the Border Gateway Protocol (iBGP) for distributing routing information among border routers. While configuration languages allow routers to change iBGP attributes as a BGP message travels within the ISP's network, most prior work neglected this possibility, focusing only on the common case where iBGP attributes are left untouched. In this paper we aim at understanding what are the pros and cons of changing iBGP attributes. We estimate how many ISPs change iBGP attributes, and we motivate such a practice by showing usage scenarios where modified iBGP attributes yield better traffic engineering. We also revisit a well-studied problem in iBGP, that is, routing stability. We show that changing iBGP attributes can generate routing oscillations which are not possible otherwise, and are not detectable by state-of-the-art algorithms. We present a technique to check for routing oscillations even when iBGP attributes are changed, and we give simple guidelines for changing iBGP attributes while preserving stability.
