This paper discusses the methods of seismic damages assessment by utilizing remotely sensed data. Classical change detection (CD) algorithms are effective when the author can acquire both pre and post-event images in a very short period of time. For images those have large temporal difference, edge detection and neighborhood operations and occurrence calculations are used to enhance the texture information and detect the displacement of outlines of ground objects. When there is only post-quake image, the Direct Recognition from Single Image (DRSI) method is used. But automated DRSI is difficult because the pattern of houses is very complex and varies greatly in different geographical areas. Experiments were carried out for 2003 Jiashi-Bachu Ms 6.8, 1999 Taiwan Jiji Ms 7.2 and 1998 Zhangbei Ms 6.2 quakes. SPOT, ERS-2 SAR and airborne images were obtained. The results were in agreement with field surveys.

Towards Automatic Segmentation of Semantic Video Objects

It remains a challenge to automatically segment video objects consistent with human visual perception and content understanding. Based on extensive literature survey on existing video object segmentation algorithms, we propose in this paper an integrated approach for semantic video object segmentation, where shape cues in successive frames is taken into account in exploiting the principle of change detection together with pre- and post processing to improve its segmentation accuracy. In comparison with existing segmentation techniques, our contribution can be highlighted as: (i) pre-processing via image sharpness to present a strong edge detection and improve change detections; (ii) localizing the positional range of the moving object to reduce the computation followed by the step of getting the difference of these two frames in that position range to extract the moving object mask. Benchmarked by one of the well reported existing algorithms, we illustrate that our proposed algorithm achieves certain level of improvements, and our algorithm also features in automatic semantic object segmentation inside videos

Single particle tracking (SPT) is a powerful class of methods for studying the dynamics of biomolecules inside living cells. The techniques reveal both trajectories of individual particles, with a resolution well below the diffraction limit of light, and the parameters defining the motion model, such as diffusion coefficients and confinement lengths. Existing algorithms assume these parameters are constant throughout an experiment. However, it has been demonstrated that they often vary with time as the tracked particles move through different regions in the cell or as conditions inside the cell change in response to stimuli. In this work we apply the method of local Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimation to the SPT application combined with change detection. Local ML uses a sliding window over the data, estimating the model parameters in each window. Once we have found the values for the parameters before and after the change, we apply offline change detection to know the exact time of the change. Then, we reestimate these parameters and show that there is an improvement in the estimation of key parameters found in SPT. Preliminary results using simulated data with a basic diffusion model with additive Gaussian noise show that our proposed algorithm is able to track abrupt changes in the parameters as they evolve during a trajectory.

A common video indexing technique is to segment video shots by identifying scene changes and then to extract features. This paper discusses a novel algorithm for detecting fade-in and fade-out using statistical features of both luminance and chrominance signals. The ratio between incremental change in the mean of the luminance signal to the chrominance (average sum of C/sub r/ and C/sub b/) is considered to identify fade-in and fade-out. Results show that the algorithm is capable of detecting all fade regions accurately even the video sequence contains other special effects.

An algorithm has been developed for morphologic adaptation and detection of arrhythmia onset. This is a computationally simple and patient-independent technique which adapts to subtle variations in electrogram morphology and promptly detects a change in morphology, as usually occurs at arrythmia onset. This technique also reduces the problem of costly detection time by quickly recognizing the onset of an arrhythmia within a few cardiac cycles. In a pilot study, the algorithm successfully adapted to electrogram morphology and identified the arrhythmia onset in a study of nine cases of onset of ventricular tachycardia during sinus rhythm.< >

Environment mapping is a very complex procedure that requires high CPU performance. For the last few years, laser scanners have become more and more important for mobile robots. Using their data requires many transformations between different coordinate systems. This new approach deals with a mapping within the coordinate system of the scanner, therefore it is very fast. The log-Hough transformation performs line finding in scans in a very efficient way, which speeds up mapping.

The temperature data in the chamber of ethylene cracking furnace is one of the important indexes for the combustion health of ethylene cracking furnace, and it is abnormal changes directly affect the stability and reliability of ethylene cracking furnace. Predicting the change trend of the temperature data in the chamber of ethylene cracking furnace is an important basis for timely understanding the working status of the ethylene cracking furnace. In this paper, based on support vector machine regression optimized by bayesian (BSVR), a prediction algorithm and model of the trend for the temperature data in the chamber of ethylene cracking furnace are established, and the prediction algorithm is compared with linear regression and random forest prediction algorithms to verify the effectiveness of the BSVR model. On this basis, an algorithm for abnormal change detection the temperature data in the chamber of ethylene cracking furnace is proposed. Based on the measured temperature data of ethylene cracking furnace in a petrochemical plant, simulation results show that the prediction and anomaly detection algorithms have high accuracy and effectiveness.

Given a ring (cycle) of n processes it is required to design the processes so that they will be able to choose a leader (a uniquely designated process) by sending messages along the ring. If the processes are indistiguishable there is no deterministic algorithm, and therefore probabilistic algorithms are proposed. These algorithms need not terminate, but their expected complexity (time or number of bits of communication) is bounded by a function of n. If the processes work asynchronously then on the average O(n log2n) bits are transmitted. In the above cases the size n of the ring was assumed to be known. If n is not known it is suggested first to determine the value of n and then use the above algorithm. However, n may only be determined probabilistically and any algorithm may yield an incorrect value. In addition, it is shown that the size of the ring cannot be calculated by any probabilistic algorithm in which the processes can sense termination.

Designing routers against different attacks is imperative in today's Internet. We propose accurate, memory efficient, and scalable techniques to detect attacks such as worms, viruses, superspreaders, and denials-of-service (DoS) in routers. Our schemes enable detection in the routers by looking only at the IP headers. We propose a general methodology to use sketches, in particular count-min sketch, FM sketch, and counting and multi-counting Bloom filters, to recognize attacks in the routing architecture. Our techniques are based on change detection, for which we propose an algorithm that can work on data-streams and leverage the accurate and efficient estimation provided by sketches. We evaluate the performance of different schemes on real traces to show their accuracy.
