In the multiuser detection (MUD) techniques, one of the most difficult problems is how to reduce the computational complexity and then improve the performance of the system. In this paper, based on the space-time CDMA system, we apply the method of the steepest descent with the noisy gradient to the multiuser detection of the system. In the multiuser detection algorithm, we change the conventional fixed step-size iterations into the time-varying step-size iterations with the noisy gradient. Simulations show that the algorithm of the multiuser detection can converge rapidly and guarantee that space-time CDMA system gets the better performance at the same time.

T-wave alternans (TWA) is a variation in the amplitude or morphology of the T wave of the beat-to-beat ECG which provides a noninvasive and clinically useful marker for the risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) caused by life threatening arrhythmias. detection of beat-to-beat microvolt fluctuation of the T wave has been made possible with the use of advanced signal processing techniques and high-resolution electrodes to reduce ambient noise. Traditional spectral analysis of TWA needs precise positioning, in this paper, an algorithm based on the maximum of T waves is proposed. Using the method can reduce sample rate, which means the amount of calculation can be reduced, and can solve the problem that the fixed T-wave sampling points can't change along with the change of heart rate. A time series of 128 amplitudes of corresponding points on the T wave are processed by fast Fourier transformation (FFT) to yield the spectral display with the various peaks. The result shows that the proposed algorithm has a high detection quality and greatly reduces the amount of calculation.

The use of wipes in video production to smooth the transition between two consecutive scenes complicates subsequent video compression, video editing, and video database indexing. It is important to detect the wipe region in order to improve the quality of the compressed video or to allow automatic parsing of the video for the purpose of editing and data base indexing. In this paper, a model is developed for the wipe region and is used to derive the statistical characteristics of the frames in the wipe region. A wipe detector that exploits the linear change in the means and the variances of the frames in the wipe region is developed. The developed wipe detector is implemented and tested with video sequences containing wipes of different types and lengths. Simulation results indicate that wipe regions are well represented by the developed wipe model, and that the developed wipe detector is robust to wipe type and length.

Content based indexing and retrieval of video is becoming increasingly important in many applications. Identifying scene changes and special effects in a video scene is an essential pre-requisite for indexing. In this paper, a sudden scene change detection algorithm for H.263 video sequences is proposed. This method uses the number of intra-coded macroblocks and displaced frame difference (DFD) signal of the video signal. Experimental results show that the performance of this algorithm is independent of the encoder threshold. Furthermore, this algorithm is capable of detecting abrupt scene changes accurately even if the video sequence contains special effects.

In this paper, an improved adaptive filtering algorithm is introduced for acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) in the double-talk (DT) situation, based on a new DT detector (DTD). The proposed DTD aims to distinguish between the DT situation and the abrupt change in the acoustic echo path (ACAEP) by employing the correlation behaviour of the gradient vector. In addition, another DTD is used to discriminate the DT situation from the steady-state (SS). The adaptation gain of the normalised least mean square (NLMS) algorithm is controlled by these proposed detectors so that it results in fast convergent rate when there is an ACAEP and slow convergent rate during the DT situation and the SS period. Simulation results based on white noise sequences support these ideas.

In positron emission tomography (PET), the format in which the data is stored has a major influence on the image reconstruction procedure. The use of the list-mode format preserves all of the measured attributes of the detected photon pairs but the events are stored in the order that they were measured, which allows only sequential access to the data. This fact limits the number of applicable algorithms and often computing speed or memory capacity constraints require the use of algorithms that do not make full use of the original precise information in the data. In this paper we show how through a change of the format in which the data is stored one can keep all the initial information about the individual events while providing random access to subsets of events belonging to given geometrical regions, thus making possible the use of maximum likelihood ordered subsets (OSEM) type algorithms with data provided as a collection of individual events (list-mode), and facilitating the adaptation of other types of algorithms. The structured data format also allows for more compact (compressed) storage of the information compared to the simple list-mode format.

The objective of this study is to cross-compare three algorithms for retrieving surface soil moisture (SSM) from ESA's Sentinel-1 (S-1) data. The context is provided by the large scientific and application interest in SSM products at high resolution and regional/continental scale that can be retrieved from S-1 data alone or in combination with other missions such as NASA/SMAP and ESA/SMOS. Of the three investigated algorithms, one inverts a scattering model exploiting a Bayesian approach, whereas the other two are change detection approaches. The cross-comparison is carried out by using both simulated and experimental data. Strengths and weaknesses of the three algorithms are identified and discussed.

This paper presents a novel adaptive harmonic detecting algorithm. For step change of load current, it can reduce the filter transient period to less than one fundamental cycle without affecting steady-state accuracy, and additional calculation is very little. The algorithm based on the analysis of transient behavior of adaptive weighting factors. It is proven that the expectation of weighting values converge exponentially with fixed time constant during transient period. The time constant is independent of system frequency and load current. So the steady-state weighting values can be estimated from the initiative variety of exponential curve. Simulation results verified theoretical analysis.

A blind watermarking method for the copyright protection of sets of polygonal lines in vector graphics images and GIS data (elevation contour maps) is presented. The paper focuses mainly on the use of simple fusion rules for combining the detector outputs from each polygonal line in order to come up with a global detection result. Experimental comparison of the various fusion methods using both synthetic and real data (elevation maps) is provided.

We propose a statistical algorithm for detecting line outages in a power system and show that it has better performance than other schemes proposed in the literature. Our algorithm is based on the Cumulative Sum (CuSum) test from the Quickest change detection (QCD) literature. It exploits the statistical properties of the measured voltage phase angles before, during, and after a line outage, whereas other methods in the literature only utilize the change in statistics that occurs at the instant of outage.
