This paper proposes a local algorithm using morphological operators, which leads to several useful tools for indexing video documents. It consists of a local computation of a similarity criterion between two successive frames of a sequence, followed by the study of the temporal evolution curve of this criterion for the whole sequence. From this curve, shot transitions are extracted by means of a powerful morphological filter, the inf top-hat. At this point, we have built a cut detection tool. The local computation together with strong morphological filtering leads to a very simple, fast and computationally efficient algorithm, with a high detection rate in the case of cuts for a small level of false detections. This algorithm also gives access to a spatial model of the transition and to a selection of key frames for each shot. By applying the local similarity measure to the key frames, two other tools are built to detect inner shot changes and syntactically related shots. Finally, the relation detection is used in a newscaster detection tool.

In this article, an efficient dissolve transition detection scheme was proposed. The proposed scheme is composed of adaptive thresholding, parameter calculation, and transition duration refinement. After adaptive thresholding, we coarsely find dissolve transition candidates. To identify dissolve transitions, a useful feature, model parameter, is extracted. Final, a transition duration refinement algorithm is utilized to search the precision duration. The experimental results demonstrate our proposed scheme can not only detect dissolve transitions well but also accurately locate their durations. Comparing with [6], our proposed scheme can provide a better performance for dissolve detection.

The first major contribution of this paper is a robust method to learn the photometric mapping between the overlapping portions of two registered images acquired either under different lighting conditions or different sensor modalities. Then, once such mapping is learnt, we demonstrate how it generalizes so that the photometric appearance can be transferred from one image to the other out of their overlapping area. This task is fundamental in several different contexts, such as image colorization, seamless mosaicking or change detection. After introducing the theory and discussing the algorithms, we will present several examples that confirm the efficacy of the proposed method in dealing with different types of images.

Sign language is the most natural and expressive way for the hearing impaired. Its most appealing application is the development of more effective and friendly interfaces for human-machine interaction. Gestures are a natural and powerful way of communication. A hand gesture recognition system can provide an opportunity for a mute person to communicate with normal people without the need of an interpreter. In this paper we proposed a novel technology for hand gesture recognition which is based on thinning of segmented image.

A system for coding image sequences is described. The system achieves a very high compression ratio so enabling video sequence transmission over low bit-rate channels. Image coding is obtained by motion estimation and compensation with a block-matching algorithm. Two techniques for coding the difference motion compensated image and the motion vector field, based on segmentation algorithms, are proposed. False motion vectors, common in conventional block-matching techniques, have been removed by means of thresholding and of a smoothing method. For smoothing, the vector field is modeled as a Gibbs/Markov random field. A mean compression ratio near to 100 and a PSNR always higher than 30 dB are obtained. Simulation results relative to different standard image sequences (namely Claire and CarPhone) are reported.< >

An efficient algorithm for singular point (core and delta) detection in fingerprint images is proposed. The algorithm is based on an efficient directional image calculation method. A novel approach for detecting the singular points using signum change curves in the directional images is also proposed. The algorithm is further optimized to achieve faster computational speed. The method was tested with a small fingerprint database and the results were compared visually to the results obtained by human experts. The results show that the algorithm is capable of detecting all the actual singular points at accurate precision with low use of computational time. The proposed algorithm outperformed a widely used algorithm (Karu and Jain, 1996) in detection accuracy and calculation speed.

An algorithm for detecting a maneuvering IR point target in complex background is proposed in this paper. It is based on frame change detection and the reverse phase feature of neighborhood (RPFN) of a maneuvering point target in a first order frame difference image that two positions of the target are near and the gray-values of them are close to in absolute value but with inverse sign. Firstly a proper threshold is selected adaptively for a frame difference image so as to reduce a majority of noises. Secondly some pairs of points with RPFN are searched, based on which corresponding vectors can be found. Thus the IR point target detection is carried out by the distribution tendency in the vectorgraph of point pairs with RPFN. Simulation experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the algorithm proposed in this paper. Finally, ROC (receiver operating characteristic) curve analysis is used to evaluate the sensitivity of the threshold in the algorithm and the rationality of the selected threshold

We propose and evaluate a method to identify tornadoes automatically in Doppler radar imagery by detecting hook echoes, which are important signatures of tornadoes, in Doppler radar precipitation density data. Our method uses a skeleton to represent 2D storm shapes. To characterize hook echoes, we propose four shape features of skeletons: curvature, curve orientation, thickness variation, boundary proximity, and two shape properties of tornadoes: southwest localization and the ratio of storm size to model hook echo size. To evaluate the hook echo detection algorithm, the hook echoes detected in several radar datasets by the algorithm are compared to those proposed by an expert. The effectiveness of the algorithm is quantified using a critical success index (CSI) analysis.

An iterative algorithm for deconvolution of Bernoulli-Gaussian processes is presented. This detection-estimation problem is formulated as that of a change of initial conditions in linear least-squares estimation. An algorithm with a very simple structure is obtained. It allows the evaluation of either marginal or joint likelihood criteria without any approximation; the resulting method is easy to implement and computationally inexpensive and remains nearly optimal.< >

We present a motion detection algorithm by a change detection filter matrix derived from Discrete Cosine Transform. Recently, a Fourier reconstruction scheme shows good results for motion detection. However, its computational cost is a major drawback. We revisit the problem and achieve two orders of magnitude faster than the previous algorithm with better performance. The proposed algorithm runs at about 800 frames per second for VGA resolution images on a consumer hardware by using only integer matrix multiplication and the symmetric property of the change detection filter matrix. In addition, our algorithm is fundamentally robust to sudden illumination changes because it works based on edge information. We verify our algorithm with challenging datasets that contain strong and sudden illumination changes.
