In earlier work, we presented proof of concept for the use of signal processing tools for fast fault detection in a model free framework. In this paper, we elaborate on the concept by applying pseudo power signatures to detect faults. We introduce a Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) approach for the computation of pseudo power signatures and discuss some of the advantages of the approach. In particular, we expand the concept of pseudo power signatures to that of signature subspaces. New experimental data from a reliable B747 aircraft model are used to test the proposed schemes.

This paper presents a simple and robust face detection algorithm that can be utilized to video summary. Because the characteristic of the face can be change from unexpected condition like as shadows or lighting, we firstly process the illumination-compensation for maintaining face components. And then, we analyze color-based face region in YCbCr space to obtain the skin color. Also, we try the morphological image processing called closing algorithm to improve the detection performance and reducing the number of false detected face regions. The steps of the closing algorithm are dilation and erosion that find the candidates in face region and removes noise from the non-face region. For localization of the face region, we make a proper face location based on golden ratio. We evaluate our algorithm in the various genres. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our face detection algorithm that leads 96.7 % precision ratio on average. The proposed method is applicable to video summary because of these high performances with low complexity.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) vegetation index (VI) products are aimed at providing consistent, spatial and temporal comparisons of global vegetation conditions, which will be used for operational monitoring of the Earth's photosynthetic vegetation activity in support of land cover classification, change detection, and biophysical interpretations. Standard processing in generating the MODIS VI products includes the temporal compositing process in order to minimize cloud and atmosphere contamination, and standardize sun/view angles. In this study, we evaluated the performance of the MODIS VI compositing algorithm as to whether the algorithm is selecting the cloud-free observations and whether it is producing and selecting observations with view zenith angles closest to nadir. The analyses were conducted over a set of globally-distributed sites covering a wide range of biome types over dry and wet seasons. We found the MODIS VI compositing algorithm to work fairly well over and to semi-arid to temperate zones in both dry and wet seasons, in which nearly all of the composited pixels were cloud-free with view zenith angles closer to nadir than the conventional MVC results. On the other hand, the MODIS algorithm did not improve upon the MVC results well over tropical rain forest areas as cloud covers persisted throughout the period analyzed in these regions.

An algorithm for planar (i.e. no altitude change) conflict resolution in air traffic control (ATC) is presented. By using the point-line duality in 2D of the parallel coordinates methodology, and a field of particles incorporating the motion constraints associated with the aircraft, a "map" in time-and-space of the conflict as well as the conflict-free regions is obtained. Then the algorithm constructs maneuvers, satisfying the constraints, which move the aircraft in conflict to the nearest available conflict-free trajectories. In the process, it is ensured that the maneuvers do not generate new conflicts. The resolution problem, being in general NP-hard, may require very high complexity even in real situations. The need for real-time solutions is handled by cascading (or running in parallel) the algorithm in levels of increasing complexity O(qN/sup (p+1)/logN), where q and N are the number of allowable maneuvers and the number of aircraft respectively, and where the minimum p=1, 2, ..., R needed to resolve a complex conflict scenario is a measure of the scenarios' (i.e. input) complexity. As an illustration, a complex conflict scenario is resolved with complexity O(N/sup 2/logN). The resolution problem is in a sense "dual" to the interception problem. An example is given where the aforementioned time-space map provides specific solutions of the One-Shot problem, which is in general NP-complete. That is "shots", if they exist, are found which intercept all the aircraft.

In this paper, we use a TASOM-based ACM algorithm for extracting the human eye inner boundary and compare the results with those obtained by GVF snakes. Some pitfalls existing in the original TASOM-based ACM algorithm are introduced and modifications are proposed to solve the problems. Implementation results show that the modifications enhanced the original algorithm and produced good boundary detection results.

In this article, we propose a simple algorithm allowing the research of stationary partitions in locally stationary processes, by use of adapted local bases like the local DCT or the short-time Fourier transform. The algorithm aims at finding some windows of which width is adapted to the rate of change in the spectrum. A similar approach was proposed by Adak (1995), who detected changes over time in the spectra of the process to select a data-dependent window size. The same principle is used in our algorithm, with a more robust estimation of the difference in spectra than Adak. After denoising of the periodogram with the help of the undecimated wavelet transform, we consider the "symmetrical case" in the best partition selection method. A post-treatment permits us to deal with the nonuniform partitions.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have shown astonishing results in the field of computer vision. This paper proposes a foreground segmentation algorithm based on CNN to tackle the practical challenges in the video surveillance system such as illumination changes, dynamic backgrounds, camouflage, and static foreground object, etc. The network is trained using the input of image sequences with respective ground-truth. The algorithm employs a CNN called VGG-16 to extract features from the input. The extracted feature maps are upsampled using a bilinear interpolation. The upsampled feature mask is passed through a sigmoid function and threshold to get the foreground mask. Binary cross entropy is used as the error function to compare the constructed foreground mask with the ground truth. The proposed algorithm was tested on two standard datasets and showed superior performance as compared to the top-ranked foreground segmentation methods.

This paper presents a perceptual grouping algorithm that performs boundary extraction on natural images. Our grouping method maintains and updates a model of the appearance of the image regions on either side of a growing contour. This model is used to change grouping behaviour at run-time, so that, in addition to following the traditional Gestalt grouping principles of proximity and good continuation, the grouping procedure favours the path that best separates two visually distinct parts of the image. The resulting algorithm is computationally efficient and robust to clutter and texture. We present experimental results on natural images from the Berkeley Segmentation Database and compare our results to those obtained with three alternate grouping methods.
