Learning background statistics is an essential task for several visual surveillance applications such as incident detection and traffic management. An adaptive foreground object extraction algorithm for real-time video surveillance is presented in this paper. The proposed algorithm improves the classic Gaussian mixture background models (GMM) to remove the undesirable subtraction results due to sudden illumination change. This implementation is achieved by replacing the whole image with edge image to build mixture Gaussian models at every frame. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm possesses higher performance on real surveillance video under a variety of different environments with lighting variations.

Subset difference revocation (SDR) provides a powerful mechanism for the efficient expression of the revocation state of a large group of key recipients. However, arbitrary assignment of receivers as leaf nodes in a static binary tree can lead to inefficiencies in certain group revocation states. Gateway subset difference revocation (GSDR), developed in our ongoing SecureKeys effort, provides the ability to group receivers based upon organizational characteristics while simultaneously introducing the ability to audit rekey and data transmission, delegate rekey decisions to subordinate decision makers, and override subordinate rekey authority when necessary. GSDR extends the existing SDR scheme by deploying rekey gateways in a hierarchy that mimics an organic decision making structure. Delegation of rekey authority offloads a significant computational and communications burden from gateways high in the tree, while correspondingly partitioning the rekey traffic required to be processed by leaf nodes in the tree. GSDR also significantly reduces label storage requirements in rekey devices by limiting terminal node fan-out

We are concerned with the problem of detecting faults in distributed software, rapidly and accurately. We assume that the software is characterized by events or attributes, which determine operational modes; some of these modes may be identified as failures. We assume that these events are known and that their probabilistic structure, in their chronological evolution, is also known, for a finite set of different operational modes. We propose and analyze a sequential algorithm that detects changes in operational modes rapidly and reliably. Further more, a threshold operational parameter of the algorithm controls effectively the induced speed versus correct detection versus false detection tradeoff.

Video segmentation is a key unit in content-based video encoding systems, such as MPEG-4. Existing algorithms are too complex for real-time applications, and hardware implementation is infeasible because of the global and irregular operations. In this paper, a hardware system for video segmentation is proposed from algorithm level to hardware architecture level. A hardware-oriented algorithm is first proposed to generate accurate object masks with local pixel operations and morphological operations, which are suitable for hardware implementation. After that, the hardware architecture is designed based on partial-result-reuse architecture and programmable morphology PE array architecture, which can achieve both high flexibility and throughput. A prototype chip is implemented to achieve the processing speed of 30 QCIF frames per second and 7,680 morphological operations per second at 26 MHz. It also shows the hardware cost is small, and the proposed video segmentation hardware system is suitable to be integrated into any content-based video encoding systems.

data-center environment, the administrator needs to understand the root-cause of the issue. The growing trend of system virtualization, combined with the need to support end-to-end performance goals for enterprise applications, have made root-cause analysis a nontrivial problem - administrators are required to manually parse all hardware events, configuration modifications, and changes in access characteristics, across all tiers of the IO path from application servers to the disks. We propose a framework that assists storage administrators with root-cause analysis in distributed systems. GENESIS consists of three key modules: Abnormality detection, Snapshot Generation, and Diagnosis. The Abnormality detection module uses clustering algorithms to create and constantly evolve the normality models of measurable parameters in components. The Snapshot Generator is triggered by a combination of abnormality detection and policies to take compact snapshots of the system state for analysis whenever a significant change occurs. The Diagnosis module parses the snapshots and shortlists the root-cause for the administrator using knowledge about the impact of the run-time changes on IO performance. We have implemented an initial proof-of-concept of GENESIS in GPFS (a high performance distributed file-system) and validated its operation for several interesting real-world scenarios. Encouraged by the results, we are currently deploying our prototype in an existing data center environment.

The design and implementing of a key point detector on embedded reconfigurable hardware is investigated. The major challenges are efficient hardware/software partitioning of the key point detector algorithm, data flow management as well as efficient use of memory, bus and processor. We present a modular and manual hardware/software co-design, with its implementation on a Xilinx XUP-Virtex II Pro board co-design to solve these issues.

We propose an intent-based system where, on top of the user intentions, the system itself generates suitable Quality of Service and resilience parameters and may augment the intent characteristics if it detects any room for improvement. We demonstrate the feasibility and challenges of such a system using mininet and the ONOS controller.

We present external-memory algorithms for differencing large hierarchical datasets. Our methods are especially suited to streaming data with bounded differences. For input sizes m and n and maximum output (difference) size e, the I/O, RAM, and CPU costs of our algorithm rdiff are, respectively, m + n, 4e + 8, and O(MN). That is, given 4e + 8 blocks of RAM, our algorithm performs no I/O operations other than those required to read both inputs. We also present a variant of the algorithm that uses only four blocks of RAM, with I/O cost 8me + 18m + n + 6e + 5 and CPU cost O(MN).

This paper proposes a new approach for the query-by-example audio retrieval, named as segment-based manifold-ranking algorithm. Our approach adopts the audio segment, instead of the whole audio, as the basic unit for the manifold-ranking process. We formulate the query-by-example audio retrieval as a manifold-ranking problem in two stages: initial ranking and re-ranking. In the initial ranking stage, we use the existing distance functions to rank all audios according to their similarity values with the query. In the re-ranking stage, each audio is divided into some segments by the detected change points, and then the segment-based manifold-ranking algorithm is employed to re-rank the initial retrieved audios. Experimental results show the proposed approach is effective to improve the ranking capability of the existing distance functions, and the audio segment is a more appropriate unit for the manifold-ranking algorithm than the whole audio.

With the fast growth of video resources, efficient video classification and management are becoming more and more important. Video partitioning is a key issue in video classification. The video partitioning involves the detection of boundaries between uninterrupted segments (video shots) of scenes. Shot boundaries can be classified into two categories, gradual transition and instantaneous change (called camera break). detection of a gradual transition is considered to be difficult. Block-based image comparison was proposed to detect shot boundaries. Unfortunately, if the differences of the corresponding blocks in the images are measured by gray levels, the method will make false alarms when the gray level change suddenly due to reasons other than shot shifts such as illumination variation which is common in news video. What is more, the step-variable algorithm can not distinguish wipe and dissolve. It is likely that step-variable algorithm will make false alarms of gradual transitions. In this paper, the proposed algorithm named MVS (model based video segmentation) can distinguish illumination variation from camera breaks as well as wipe from dissolve. Moreover, the positions of the gradual transition are located correctly. MVS is especially efficient in detecting wipes. Experimental results are reported in the paper to validate the proposed method.
