We discuss the extraction of two signals from a monophonic gramophone record, and observe that the impulsive noise is significantly different in the two. This, coupled with the redundancy of the desired parts of the signals, has great advantages in the processes of impulsive noise detection and removal. It is simple to obtain two suitable signals by using a stereo replay cartridge, and we develop detection and interpolation algorithms that use such a pair of signals. We present the results of computer simulations and informal listening tests on archive material. In both cases the two-channel method is found to be an improvement over a similar single-channel algorithm, with little change in computational cost.< >

Describes an efficient approach for the detection of line junctions in gray-level images. The algorithm is divided into two steps. First, given the lines extracted from the original image, local line curvature is estimated. For this purpose, two different measures of curvature are proposed: The rate of change of direction of the orientation vector along the line and the mean of the dot products of orientation vectors within a given neighborhood. The second step involves the localization of junctions. Examples are provided based on experiments with remotely sensed images containing road intersections.

Although a GOP (group of picture) length is often fixed in MPEG, this may not guarantee the best picture quality from the point of view of coding efficiency. Furthermore, it is also well known that P-picture interval M=3 does not provide the best quality for all sequences. We propose an MPEG encoding algorithm with scene adaptive dynamic GOP structure to enhance the picture quality in the cases mentioned above. Using macroblock characteristics such as luminance activity and simple motion compensation on the activity domain, N and M values are dynamically determined.

In this paper, we present a method of segmenting video to detect cuts with accuracy equal to or better than both histogram and other feature based methods. As well, the method is faster than other feature based methods. By utilizing feature tracking on corners, rather than lines, we are able to reliably detect features such as cuts, fades and salient frames. Experimental evidence shows that the method is able to withstand high motion situations better than existing methods. Initial implementations using full sized video frames are able to achieve processing rates of 10-30 frames per second depending on the level of motion and number of features being tracked; this includes the time to generate the MPEG decompressed frames.

Background subtraction is a fundamental preprocessing task in computer vision. This task becomes challenging in real scenarios due to variations in the background for both static and moving camera sequences. Several deep learning methods for background subtraction have been proposed in the literature with competitive performances. However, these models show performance degradation when tested on unseen videos; and they require huge amount of data to avoid overfitting. Recently, graph-based algorithms have been successful approaching unsupervised and semi-supervised learning problems. Furthermore, the theory of graph signal processing and semi-supervised learning have been combined leading to new insights in the field of machine learning. In this paper, concepts of recovery of graph signals are introduced in the problem of background subtraction. We propose a new algorithm called Graph BackGround Subtraction (GraphBGS), which is composed of: instance segmentation, background initialization, graph construction, graph sampling, and a semi-supervised algorithm inspired from the theory of recovery of graph signals. Our algorithm has the advantage of requiring less labeled data than deep learning methods while having competitive results on both: static and moving camera videos. GraphBGS outperforms unsupervised and supervised methods in several challenging conditions on the publicly available change detection (CDNet2014), and UCSD background subtraction databases.

Automating tools for geo-locating and geo-orienting static cameras is a key step in creating a useful global imaging network from cameras attached to the Internet. We present algorithms for partial camera calibration that rely on access to accurately time-stamped images captured over time from cameras that do not move. To support these algorithms we also offer a method of camera viewpoint change detection, or "tamper detection", which determines if a camera has moved in the challenging case when images are only captured every half hour. These algorithms are tested on a subset of the AMOS (Archive of Many Outdoor Scenes) database, and we present preliminary results that highlight the promise of these approaches.

The importance of video content analysis and retrieval increases as storage capacity grows in consumer devices. Videotext detection is very important for video indexing and retrieval enabling features such as commercial detection, intelligent keyframe extraction, program boundary detection and others. In this paper we propose multi-layered videotext detection tailored to an MP EG encoding scheme. We approached the videotext detection from a perspective of scalability and flexibility for different platforms with varying resources. We propose a three-layered algorithm. The first layer works in compressed domain features such as macroblock type. The second layer works in semicompressed domain such as DCT coefficients. The third layer works in uncompressed domain, i.e. spatial domain. As the next layer gets implemented the complexity increases but so does the precision of the algorithm. On constrained platforms, only the first layer would be implemented. On high-end platforms all three layers could be implemented to enable a full suite of indexing and retrieval applications.

Video classification and segmentation are fundamental steps for efficient accessing, retrieval and browsing of large amounts of video data. We have developed a scene classification scheme using a hidden Markov model (HMM) based classifier. By utilizing the temporal behaviors of different scene classes, the HMM classifier can effectively classify video segments into one of the pre-defined scene classes. In this paper, we describe two approaches for joint video classification and segmentation based on a HMM, which works by searching for the most likely class transition path utilizing the dynamic programming technique.
