Evaluation of change detection algorithms using Difficulty Maps

The evaluation of a change detection algorithm should show its superiority over state-of-the-art algorithms' performances. Evaluating an algorithm involves executing it to segment a set of videos and comparing the results with the ground truth. Here, we used the difficulty level to classify each pixel of each frame of the videos of a dataset as an algorithm performance measure. A structure called "difficulty map" stores information about the difficulty of classifying each pixel in a frame. Based on these maps, we developed a metric that aims to evaluate the performance of algorithms on the difficulty map. The results showed that there are algorithms with the characteristic of classifying pixels that most state-of-the-art algorithms cannot classify (promising algorithms). Identifying such algorithms is essential since improving their performance means facing challenges already overcome by existing approaches.

Remote sensing has long been used as a means of detecting and classifying the different types of data attribute present in the land cover. In general, remote sensing is widely used across variety of real-time applications to identify the change information of geographical areas. The Objective of this work is to study three land cover change detection algorithms such as Image Differencing method, Auto-Correlation function method and Distance Analysis method. In this paper, land cover change is obtained by change detection method from the sequence of annual pattern dataset of multi-date temporal datasets. This work presents a performance comparison of change detection algorithms based on performance metrics change data and False alarm. From the evaluated results, Autocorrelation function method performs better than other Image differencing and Distance analysis method.

This paper presents a study on the constant false alarm rate (CFAR) filter design for change detection algorithms (CDA). More specifically, we are interested in CFAR filters used in CDA for low frequency ultra-wideband (UWB) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. The filter design performance was evaluated in terms of false alarm rate (FAR) and probability of detection (PD). For evaluation purposes, we considered a set of SAR images obtained with the CARABAS-II system. The results are compared with the ones presented in [1], where the same CDA was considered, except for the CFAR filter. The results show that relevant FAR performance improvements can be obtained by just modifying the CFAR filter parameters taking into account the image resolution and target characteristics. © 2017 IEEE.

Scene change detection algorithms become the key issues especially for video information in many digital video applications such as digital libraries and video servers. The accuracy and execution speed of the scene change detection algorithm is critical if large amounts of video data are to be processed. In this paper, we discuss the performance of the three previous proposed methods and present a new algorithm to use the histogram difference of DC images incorporating the HVS (human visual system) for fast and accurate detection. The simulation results are also presented for two test video sequences, commercials and news, to show that the proposed algorithm works better than the previous ones.

We propose an algorithm that equalizes the contrast of grayscale image pairs to simplify the task of change detection. To ensure robustness of the detection under different illumination conditions, some authors recently proposed algorithms that compare the level lines of the images. We show - using ideas from the ldquoshape from shadingrdquo community - that under directed light, a necessary condition for the level lines to be illumination invariant is that the underlying surfaces be developable. The surfaces of cities can be modeled as piece-wise smooth developable surfaces, and it is therefore sensible to make use of the level lines for change detection. Our algorithm is robust and efficient both on synthetic OpenGL scenes and natural Quickbird images.

In a sequential manufacturing process, a product proceeds through different manufacturing stages. At these stages, sensors monitor the features of the product. In this paper, the information produced by the sensors is employed to detect abrupt changes in process variables. The developed algorithms contribute to an on-line application to a manufacturing system. A literature survey revealed the most common methods utilized in change detection. On-line applicability and transferability to new manufacturing lines are the most important features for real applications. During both on-line and off-line tests, some of the presented methods showed satisfactory results. Real-time, on-line manufacturing environment sets also its requirements for the applications. In the future, the possibility of combining expert knowledge with the aforementioned methods is the crucial point to study. The information thus received has usage in the preventive maintenance and quality control.

A Video Scene change detection method is needed in order to manage the rising amount of video content efficiently in applications like digital library, object tracking, watermarking, video on demand (VOD), etc. Scene change detection is done by various methods like pixel-based, histogram, Otsu's, edge-based, statistics-based, compression-based, etc. In this paper, we present abrupt scene change detection for videos using pixel-based, edge-based and Otsu's method. The results are compared depending on the video size and time.

Due to growing human population and technology, huge climate change occurs which impact the environment and lives. Satellite images are profound for monitoring the ground surface. Due to the enormous availability of multispectral images, various applications based on classification, change detection have emerged. Researchers have developed lots of Multispectral change detection Methods (MSCD) till date. These methods show essential sub-pixel level details, such as the abundance variation of each underlying material at a given location, or the shift in material distribution within the scene, with time or as a result of significant events such as a natural disaster. The main aim of the proposed work is to present a comparative study of various unsupervised methods for detecting binary changes in multispectral imagery. Through experimental study, we provide a comparative analysis of the algorithms. The various algorithms considered for our study are (1) Principal Component Analysis (PCA), (2) PCA with K-means clustering, (3) Multivariate Alteration detection (MAD), (4) Iteratively Reweighted Multivariate Alteration detection (IRMAD). Using real-world multi-temporal multispectral imaging dataset, we assess and compare the performance of all these algorithms and their time efficiency on Central Processing Unit (CPU) and Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). The empirical findings, accompanied by a description of each algorithms pros and cons, are intended to help researchers pick the procedures with the good features for MSCD applications.

Background subtraction is a popular algorithm for video object segmentation. It identifies foreground objects by comparing the input images with a pure background image. In camera-motion compensated sequences, small errors in the motion estimation can lead to large image differences along sharp edges. Consequently, the errors in the image registration finally lead to segmentation errors. This paper proposes a computationally efficient approach to detect image areas having a high risk of showing misregistration errors. Furthermore, we describe how existing change detection algorithms can be modified to avoid segmentation errors in these areas. Experiments show that our algorithm can improve the segmentation quality. The algorithm is memory efficient and suitable for real-time processing.

The great presumption of change detection has led to rapid development of diverse change detection algorithms. Unsupervised change detection has a vital role in a wide variety of applications like remote sensing, motion detection, environmental monitoring, medical diagnosis, damage assessment, agricultural surveys, surveillance etc. In this paper a systematic survey of the commonly used methodologies for unsupervised change detection is presented.
