A Unary Error Correction Code for the Near-Capacity Joint Source and channel coding of Symbol Values from an Infinite Set

A novel Joint Source and channel Code (JSCC) is proposed, which we refer to as the Unary Error Correction (UEC) code. Unlike existing JSCCs, our UEC facilitates the practical encoding of symbol values that are selected from a set having an infinite cardinality. Conventionally, these symbols are conveyed using Separate Source and channel Codes (SSCCs), but we demonstrate that the residual redundancy that is retained following source coding results in capacity loss. This loss is found to have a value of 1.11 dB in a particular practical scenario, where Quaternary Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) modulation is employed for transmission over an uncorrelated narrowband Rayleigh fading channel. By contrast, the proposed UEC code can eliminate this capacity loss, or reduce it to an infinitesimally small value. Furthermore, the UEC code has only a moderate complexity, facilitating its employment in practical low-complexity applications.

This paper describes a methodology for evaluating the operational rate-distortion behavior of combined source and channel coding schemes with particular application to images, In particular, me demonstrate use of the operational rate-distortion function to obtain the optimum tradeoff between source coding accuracy and channel error protection under the constraint of a fixed transmission bandwidth for the investigated transmission schemes. Furthermore, we develop information-theoretic bounds on performance for specific source and channel coding systems and demonstrate that our combined source-channel coding methodology applied to different schemes results in operational rate-distortion performance which closely approach these theoretical limits. We concentrate specifically on a wavelet-based subband source coding scheme and the use of binary rate-compatible punctured convolutional (RCPC) Codes for transmission over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Explicit results for real-world images demonstrate the efficacy of this approach.

Communicating Correlated Sources Over MAC and Interference channels II: Joint Source-channel coding

We present the second part of our work on communicating correlated sources over multiple access (MAC) and interference channels (IC). Specifically, we undertake a Shannon-theoretic study of the above scenarios and focus on characterizing sufficient conditions for lossless recoverability of the sources at the decoder(s). We enhance the fixed block-length (B-L) coding technique by incorporating the technique of inducing source correlation onto channel inputs, originally discovered by Cover, El Gamal and Salehi. In contrast to the first part, performance analysis of a joint source-channel decoder poses new challenges. We enhance the earlier developed suite of coding and analytical tools to overcome these challenges and derive (simplified) single-letter characterizations for a new set of sufficient conditions for both scenarios. For both the MAC and IC problems, the derived sufficient conditions are (i) subsumed in the current known tightest, and (ii) strictly weaker for identified examples. Lastly, we propose simple 'plug-in' approaches that can further weaken the derived sufficient conditions. Our findings enable us to subsume Dueck's findings (1981) and go even further for the example considered therein.

Low-Latency Deep Analog Speech Transmission Using Joint Source channel coding

Low-latency configurable speech transmission presents significant challenges in modern communication systems. Traditional methods rely on separate source and channel coding, which often degrades performance under low-latency constraints. Moreover, non-configurable systems require separate training for each condition, limiting their adaptability in resource-constrained scenarios. This paper proposes a configurable low-latency deep Joint Source-channel coding (JSCC) system for speech transmission. The system can be configured for varying signal-to-noise ratios (SNR), wireless channel conditions, or bandwidths. A joint source-channel encoder based on deep neural networks (DNN) is used to compress and transmit analog-coded information, while a configurable decoder reconstructs speech from noisy compressed signals. The system latency is adaptable based on the input speech length, achieving a minimum latency of 2 ms, with a lightweight architecture of 25 k parameters, significantly fewer than state-of-the-art systems. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed system outperforms conventional separate source-channel coding systems in terms of speech quality and intelligibility, particularly in low-latency and noisy channel conditions. It also shows robustness in fixed configured scenarios, though higher latency conditions and better channel environments favor traditional coding systems.

Deep Source-channel coding for Sentence Semantic Transmission With HARQ

Recently, semantic communication has been brought to the forefront because deep learning (DL)-based methods, such as Transformer, have achieved great success in semantic extraction. Although semantic communication has been successfully applied in sentence transmission to reduce semantic errors, the existing architecture is usually fixed in terms of codeword length and inefficient and inflexible for varying sentence lengths. In this study, we exploit hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) to reduce the semantic transmission error further. We combine semantic coding (SC) with Reed-Solomon (RS) channel coding and HARQ (called SC-RS-HARQ). SC-RS-HARQ exploits the superiority of SC and the reliability of conventional methods successfully. Although SC-RS-HARQ can be easily applied in existing HARQ systems, we also develop an end-to-end architecture called SCHARQ to pursue enhanced performance. Numerical results demonstrate that SCHARQ significantly reduces the required number of bits for semantic sentence transmission and the sentence error rate. We also attempt to replace error detection from cyclic redundancy check to a similarity detection network called Sim32 to allow the receiver to reserve wrong sentences with similar semantic information and conserve transmission resources.

The digital spectrum-compatible high-definition television (DSC-HDTV) system, a digital HDTV simulcast system designed for United States terrestrial broadcasting on currently unassignable channels, is described. The system uses progressively scanned source signals and is characterized by an effective, high-performance video compression system. Compression includes motion compensation with hierarchical block matching and block transform coding with adaptive quantization according to perceptual criteria. Video compression is designed to simplify the receiver decoding; only a few VLSI chips and only one full frame memory are required. The source signal, source coding, channel coding, modulation, and performance of the system are discussed.

In the Letter a new technique which integrates digital demodulation of CPM signals and decoding of linear block codes is described. An optimum (7, 4) linear block code which minimises the bit error probability at the output of the decoder is presented. Comparisons between the optimum code and other classical codes show that the proposed code is quite attractive.

With the recent advancements in edge artificial intelligence (AI), future sixth-generation (6G) networks need to support new AI tasks such as classification and clustering apart from data recovery. Motivated by the success of deep learning, the semantic-aware and task-oriented communications with deep joint source and channel coding (JSCC) have emerged as new paradigm shifts in 6G from the conventional data-oriented communications with separate source and channel coding (SSCC). However, most existing works focused on the deep JSCC designs for one task of data recovery or AI task execution independently, which cannot be transferred to other unintended tasks. Differently, this paper investigates the JSCC semantic communications to support multi-task services, by performing the image data recovery and classification task execution simultaneously. First, we propose a new end-to-end deep JSCC framework by unifying the coding rate reduction maximization and the mean square error (MSE) minimization in the loss function. Here, the coding rate reduction maximization facilitates the learning of discriminative features for enabling to perform classification tasks directly in the feature space, and the MSE minimization helps the learning of informative features for high-quality image data recovery. Next, to further improve the robustness against variational wireless channels, we propose a new gated deep JSCC design, in which a gated net is incorporated for adaptively pruning the output features to adjust their dimensions based on channel conditions. Finally, we present extensive numerical experiments to validate the performance of our proposed deep JSCC designs as compared to various benchmark schemes. It is shown that our proposed designs simultaneously provide efficient multi-task services, and the proposed gated deep JSCC framework efficiently reduces the communication overhead with only marginal performance loss. This paper presents results of computer simulations and laboratory tests to investigate various digital techniques (i.e., trellis coded QAM, vestigial sideband (VSB) modulation, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), and adaptive equalization) proposed for Advanced Television (ATV) terrestrial broadcasting. The performance of these channel coding and modulation techniques, in the presence of various interferences (i.e., Gaussian noise, ATV and NTSC co-channel interference) and in a multipath distortion environment, is evaluated and compared. The effects of ATV interference into NTSC systems are also investigated.
