Low-capacity scenarios have become increasingly important in the technology of Internet of Things (IoT) and the next generation of mobile networks. Such scenarios require efficient and reliable transmission of information over channels with an extremely small capacity. Within these constraints, the performance of state-of-the-art coding techniques is far from optimal in terms of either rate or complexity. Moreover, the current non-asymptotic laws of optimal channel coding provide inaccurate predictions for coding in the low-capacity regime. In this paper, we provide the first comprehensive study of channel coding in the low-capacity regime. We will investigate the fundamental non-asymptotic limits for channel coding as well as challenges that must be overcome for efficient code design in low-capacity scenarios.

Long distance molecular communication (MC) is prone to channel errors, leading to an increased bit error rate. For solving the issue, a new coding scheme named weak sequence preventive mapping code is designed, conforming to the channel characteristics of the macroscopic air-based MC using fluorescent dye. The scheme not only minimizes the transmission errors, but also conserves the resource in the form of sprayed water-based dye solution.

COMBINED EFFECTS OF PHASE SWEEPING TRANSMITTER DIVERSITY AND channel coding

A two-branch phase sweeping transmitter diversity scheme that can produce forced fast fading at the receiver is proposed for improving the effect of channel coding on bit error rate (BER) performance in very slow multipath fading environments. While the proposed transmitter diversity requires two transmit antennas, a single receive antenna can be used. Hence, it is most applicable for digital paging systems that require very simple receivers. The digital modulated signal is transmitted simultaneously from the two spatially separated antennas, with the carrier for one antenna being phase modulated by the phase sweeping function eta(t). Two sweeping functions are considered: eta(t) = DELTA-THETA sin(2-pi-f(H)t) (sinusoidal) and 2-pi-f(H)t (linear). An analysis shows that when bit interleaving of m-bit depth is used, it is required that DELTA-THETA > pi and mnf(H)T > 1/2 (sinusoidal) or >1 (linear) where n is the codeword length of the error correction code and T is the bit length of the digital transmission. When 32-kbps transmission with m = 10-bits interleaving and BCH (23,12) error correction code (n = 23) are used, f(H) = 70 Hz is sufficient for the sinusoidal phase sweeping function. Therefore, bandwidth expansion due to phase sweeping is negligible. Experimental results on transmitter diversity with the sinusoidal phase sweeping function are presented for 32 kbps quarternary differential phase shift keying (QDPSK) with differential detection.

Variable-length channel coding with noisy feedback

It is known that perfect noiseless feedback can be used to improve the reliability of communication systems. We show how to make those gains robust to noise on the feedback link. We focus on feedback links that are themselves discrete memoryless channels. We demonstrate that Forney's erasure-decoding exponent is achievable given any positive-capacity feedback channel. We also demonstrate that as the desired rate of communication approaches the capacity of the forward channel, the Burnashev upper bound on the reliability function is achievable given any positive-capacity noisy feedback channel. Finally, we demonstrate that our scheme dominates the erasure-decoding exponent at all rates and, for instance, at zero rate can achieve up to three-quarters of Burnashev's zero-rate reliability. This implies that in a shared medium, to maximise the reliability function some degrees of freedom should be allocated to feedback. Copyright (C) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Joint Source/channel coding of Statistically Multiplexed Real-Time Services on Packet Networks

We investigate the interaction of congestion control with the partitioning of source information into components of varying importance for variable bit-rate packet voice and packet video. High-priority transport for the more important signal components results in substantially increased objective service quality. Using a Markov chain voice source model with simple PCM speech encoding and a priority queue, simulation results show a signal-to-noise ratio improvement of 45 dB with two priorities over an unprioritized system. Performance is sensitive to the fraction of traffic placed in each priority, and the optimal partition depends on network loss conditions. When this partition is optimized dynamically, quality degrades gracefully over a wide range of load values. Results with DCT encoded speech and video samples show similar behavior. Variations are investigated such as further partition of low-priority information into multiple priorities. A simulation with delay added to represent other network nodes shows general insensitivity to delay of network feedback information. A comparison is made between dropping packets on buffer overflow and timeout based on service requirements.

Embedding channel coding in arithmetic coding

An arithmetic coding algorithm that incorporates channel coding is presented. For a source alphabet with m symbols, the selected Mt code points over the [0-1) interval have a desired minimum Hamming distance d(min) between them. The decoder utilises this d(min) in conjunction with the self-synchronisation property of arithmetic coding and knowledge of the source statistics to recover the original sequence of symbols, in the presence of channel errors, without the use of known channel coding techniques. The selected d(min) provides a desired error protection level. The introduced scheme is suitable for bandwidth-limited binary symmetric channels (BSCs) with moderate to high error rates.

The use of multiresolution (MR) joint source-channel coding in the context of digital terrestrial broadcasting of high definition television (HDTV) is shown to be an efficient alternative to traditional single-resolution techniques. While the single-resolution schemes suffer from a sharp threshold effect in the fringes of the broadcast area, we show how a matched multiresolution approach to both source and channel coding can provide a stepwise graceful degradation. Furthermore, this multiresolution approach improves the behavior, in terms of coverage and robustness of the transmission scheme, over systems that are not specifically designed for broadcast situations. This paper examines the alternatives available for multiresolution transmission through embedded modulation and error correction codes. We also show how multiresolution trellis-coded modulation (TCM) can be used to increase coverage range. We present coding results and simulations of noisy transmission. From a systems point of view, we also discuss the tradeoffs involved in the choice of the low- and high-resolution coverage areas as well as the comparative costs and complexities of the different multiresolution transmission alternatives.

A Robust Watermarking Scheme in YCbCr Color Space Based on channel coding

The rapid development of big data and cloud computing technologies greatly accelerate the spreading and utilization of images and videos. The copyright protection for images and videos is becoming increasingly serious. In this paper, we proposed the robust non-blind watermarking schemes in YCbCr color space based on channel coding. The source watermark image is encoded and singular value decomposed. Subsequently, the singular value matrixes are embedded into the Y, Cb, and Cr components of the host image after four-level discrete wavelet transform (DWT). The embedding factor for each component is calculated based on the just-noticeable distortion and the singular vectors of HL subband of DWT. The peak signal-to-noise ratio of the watermarked image and the normalized correlation coefficient of the extracted watermark are investigated. It is shown that the proposed channel coding-based schemes can achieve near exact watermark recovery against all kinds of attacks. Considering both robustness and transparency, the convolutional code-based additive embedding scheme is optimal, which can also achieve good performance for video watermarking after extension.

This paper considers different channel coding techniques suitable for the control plane signals that will be required for some of the services enabled by the ATSC 3.0 Broadcast Core Network (BCN). Short packet and variable code rates are necessary for control plane communications. The suggested techniques are included in the 5G New Radio (NR) and IEEE 802.11 standards. LDPC and CRC-aided (CA) Polar for 5G NR, while Convolution Codes are the main solution for WLAN communications. On the one hand, the study comprises a discussion on the impact of the technical solutions into the core network architectural aspects. On the other hand, the reliability performance of the candidates is evaluated under the Additive White Gaussian Noise channel (AWGN) for different code rates. The results show that 5G NR CA-Polar is the best candidate.

channel capacity and error exponents of variable rate adaptive channel coding for Rayleigh fading channels

We have evaluated the information theoretical performance of variable rate adaptive channel coding for Rayleigh fading channels. The channel states are detected at the receiver and fed back to the transmitter by means of a noiseless feedback link, Based on the channel state informations, the transmitter can adjust the channel coding scheme accordingly. Coherent channel and arbitrary channel symbols with a fixed average transmitted power contraint are assumed. The channel capacity and the error exponent are evaluated and the optimal rate control rules are found for Rayleigh fading channels with feedback of channel states. It is shown that the variable rate scheme can only increase the channel error exponent, The effects of additional practical constraints and finite feedback delays are also considered. Finally, we compare the performance of the variable rate adaptive channel coding in high bandwidth-expansion systems (CDMA) and high bandwidth-efficiency systems (TDMA).
