Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a transmission technique that is based on many orthogonal carriers that are transmitted simultaneously. OFDM effectively mitigates inter symbol interference (ISI) and has high-efficient frequency utilization. OFDM channel estimation is one of the key technologies in the OFDM system. In this paper, channel estimation techniques for OFDM systems, based on pilot-aided channel estimation algorithm, over mountain wireless environment are investigated. It is well known that least square (LS) and linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) algorithms are effectual channel estimation methods for OFDM. We propose a novel modified LS channel estimation method, which is based on noise reduction procedure to improve the channel estimation accuracy. The simulation results demonstrate that comparing to LS channel estimation algorithm, LMMSE algorithm and the proposed modified LS algorithm provide better performances. In this study, the authors present a novel channel estimation algorithm for three-hop multi-input multi-output (MIMO) relay systems using the PARATUCK2 tensor model. At the destination, the proposed algorithm exploits a unified formulation of the received signal as a PARATUCK2 model, and jointly estimates all of the channel matrices involved in the communication. Compared with existing algorithms, the proposed algorithm only requires the source to transmit the channel training sequences, does not need relays to perform any task of channel estimation, and yields smaller estimation error. Moreover, the proposed algorithm can be extended to multi-hop MIMO relay systems with any number of hops. Numerical examples are shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the PARATUCK2-based channel estimation algorithm.

A channel estimation method is proposed in polarization-division multiplexing single-carrier frequency domain equalization (PDM-SCFDE) optical coherent communications systems. The method utilizes a pair of orthogonal training sequences (TSs) in frequency domain and combines them with a provided reconstructive algorithm. Consequently, it can estimate full PDM channel state information accurately. Meanwhile, only one block of training overhead is required in the method. In this way, it is extremely bandwidth efficient. Two blocks training overhead are needed for the other literature. Based on a 100-Gb/s PDM-SCFDE coherent optical communications system, numerical simulation results show that the bit error rate performance of the proposed method is better than that of other methods with different TSs. This paper explores the network design implications to be taken into account in Smart Gateway Diversity (SGD) satellite systems, where gateway outage events have to be counteracted by efficient handover procedures. In more detail, enabling high data-rate satellite systems in these conditions requires efficient coordination strategies between gateways, upstream routers and Network Control Centre (NCC) to precisely estimate the need of handover and to efficiently manage the satellite resources. To this regard, this paper adopts a simple channel estimation algorithm and applies network coding to cope with packet losses deriving from possible inaccuracies on the prediction of the handover time. The results obtained via simulation confirm the capabilities of network-coding-based approaches and pave the way for further studies in the area of network for SGD satellite systems.

Physical layer network coding with channel and delay estimation

Decode-and-forward physical layer network coding (PLNC) is one of the promising high-performance techniques for wireless relay networks. This study presents a channel and delay estimation algorithm along with a detection scheme for time-domain two-way relay network in Rayleigh block fading channels. Preambles are attached for frame-based synchronisation and channel estimation. Moreover, to achieve low-complexity estimation, the preambles are designed in Alamouti code structure. The Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) of the channel estimation is given, and simulations show that the mean-square error of channel estimation of the proposed scheme could reach the CRB. Compared with the traditional approach, the newly proposed combined scheme can achieve almost the same performance, but with significant improvement in computational complexity. At last, bit-error-rate performances analysis is given. Simulation validates the authors' analysis, and shows the upper bound and lower bound are tight.

Joint ML time-frequency synchronisation and channel estimation algorithm for MIMO-OFDM systems

The maximum-likelihood (ML) time-frequency synchronisation algorithm combined with channel estimation for multiple input multiple output-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems in frequency selective fading channels is addressed. In the proposed algorithm, the authors use two steps to maximise an ML metric to obtain first the frequency offset and then timing. A fast Fourier transform algorithm is used to estimate the frequency offset. Using these two estimates, the channel is identified. A simple iterative algorithm is proposed to improve the frequency offset estimation. The performance of the proposed synchronisation approach, in terms of timing failure probability and mean square error of the estimated frequency offset and bit error rate, is compared with others in the literature. Comparison of simulation results with the Cramer-Rao lower bound clearly illustrates the accuracy of the proposed algorithm, which outperforms the state-of-the-art synchroniser devices in the open literature.

A comparative investigation on various channel estimation algorithms for OFDM system in the mobile communication environment is presented and analyzed in terms of computational complexity, mean square error, and bit error rate in this paper. As a result, Wiener filter estimation shows the best error performance. Concerning the computational complexity as well as the performance, however, the piecewise linear estimator is considered as a proper choice when the reference signal spacing is relatively narrow. And the cubic-spline estimator is a good alternative to the Wiener filter estimation if the reference signal spacing is wider than the coherent bandwidth of transmission channel.
