In this paper, the efficient analysis of electromagnetic scattering from objects is performed utilizing the characteristic basis function method (CBFM) with the compressed sensing (CS) technique. CBFM generates sets of high-level basis functions, i.e. the characteristic basis function (CBF), defined over macro domains of the object under discussion, to significantly reduce the matrix size and storage and make the reduced linear system easily manageable and solvable. In the conventional fulfillment, to generate the CBF, a series of matrix equations need to be solved repeatedly with various excitations of multiple incident angles and different polarizations. With the help of CS, much fewer excitations are necessary to solve the matrix equations, and one can obtain the measurements of the induced currents accordingly. Finally, the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) method is used to reconstruct the real induced currents and from which the CBF is generated. Numerical examples are included to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method.

Scattering Analysis of Finite Periodic Array in the Vicinity of Arbitrary Object Using Hybrid Macro basis function method

A hybrid macro basis function (MBF) method is proposed to analyze the finite periodic array in the vicinity of an arbitrary object. The array cells and object are modeled using the low order basis functions firstly. Afterwards, the MBFs defined on the cells are constructed using the modified accurate subentire domain basis function method. The MBFs on the object can be obtained using the characteristic basis function method. The total number of MBFs defined on the array cells and object is far less than that of the low order bases. Another advantage of the proposed method is that multiple excitations can be efficiently computed. Simulation results show that good agreement between the proposed method and other techniques is reached. In addition, computational efficiency is validated.

An efficient hybrid finite element-boundary integral-characteristic basis function method (FE-BI-CBFM) is proposed to solve the problem of electromagnetic scattering by multiple three-dimensional (3-D) cavities embedded in a conducting plane. Specifically, the finite element method is used to obtain the solution of the vector wave equation inside each cavity and the boundary integral equation is applied on the apertures of all the cavities as a global boundary condition. The resultant coupling system of equations is solved by using an excitation independent characteristic basis function method. Some numerical results are included to illustrate the validity and capability of the proposed method.

A numerically efficient method for the evaluation of wide band scattering characteristics is presented. This approach, which is based on the characteristic basis function method (CBFM), utilises the characteristic basis functions (CBFs) that are derived for the highest frequency in the range of interest. These CBFs, once generated, also capture the electromagnetic behaviour of the lower frequencies as well. The use of these bases, which will be referred to as ultra-wide band characteristic basis functions (UCBFs), enables one to solve the scattering for any frequency sample in the band without going through the time-consuming process to generate the CBFs anew. Numerical results shown validate the accuracy and the time efficiency of this method.

The ultra-wideband characteristic basis function method (UCBFM) is known as an effective technique for analyzing the wideband scattering problems, where the ultra-wideband characteristic basis functions (UCBFs) can be reused for any sampling frequency in the range of interest. However, these UCBFs need to be constructed via an external excitation source, and the number of UCBFs is generally large for the increasing size of target, which leads to an increased size of the reduced matrix. To mitigate these problems, a universal characteristic mode basis function method (UCMBFM) is proposed in this study. Unlike the existing UCBFM, the construction of universal characteristic mode basis functions (UCMBFs) proposed in this study are only dependent on the impedance matrix, which is essentially determined by the material and shape of objects. Therefore, these UCMBFs are independent of frequency and can be reused at lower frequency band. Moreover, in proposed scheme, the number of UCMBFs and the size of reduced matrix are both less, when compared to traditional UCBFM. Finally, the corresponding numerical results demonstrate that efficiency and accuracy can be achieved by the proposed method.

The characteristic basis function method (CBFM) is used to analyze the electromagnetic characteristics of antenna arrays in this paper. The original antenna arrays are divided into a number of subdomains and high-level basis functions are constructed for each subdomain through their couplings, the resulting matrix can be largely reduced. The characteristic basis function method not only has high accuracy and computing time is greatly reduced. The numerical results are given to illustrate that the method is accurate and efficient.

In recent years, the characteristic basis function method has been developed as an efficient approach for the solution of large electromagnetic radiation or scattering problems. According to this technique, the currents over the scenario under analysis are defined using a set of pre-computed characteristic basis functions, associated with a number of blocks into which the geometry is partitioned. This involves some computational advantages due to the reduction of the number of unknowns compared to conventional approaches. However, additional pre-processing time is introduced due to the computation of the CBFs and the reduced coupling matrix. A novel strategy is presented in this study in order to accelerate the generation of the reduced matrix, based on the application of the multilevel fast multipole algorithm.

In order to improve the efficiency of characteristic basis function method for analyzing the monostatic scattering problems, the principal component analysis (PCA) is used to compress the excitation matrix, then the number of the matrix equation solutions is reduced because of the reduced number of excitation. Secondly, a merged characteristic basis functions (CBFs) method is proposed by considering the mutual interaction among adjacent blocks. The number of matrix equation solutions and the number of CBFs are both reduced by using proposed method. Numerical examples verify and demonstrate that the proposed method is accuracy and efficiency.

A study on the parameters of an approach that combines the characteristic basis function method and the multilevel fast multipole algorithm is presented. This approach is a very efficient scheme for the rigorous computation of electrically large problems. An analysis of the configuration parameters of the method to obtain accurate results reducing CPU time is shown. Non-uniform rational B-splines surfaces are employed for the representation of the geometry and the characteristic basis functions are described in terms of curved rooftops generated in the parametric space. The associated macro-testing functions are defined as aggregations of curved razor-blade functions.
