We propose a novel characteristic basis function method (CBFM) by using the Gauss-Seidel method for the calculation of the improved primary characteristic basis functions. By using this method, the accuracy of the CBFM can be improved. We analyzed the radar cross section of two scatterers by using the proposed technique. It was found that the analysis accuracy is improved in comparison with the results of the conventional technique.

A direct-solver based domain decomposition method is applied to efficiently compute orientationally averaged scattering efficiencies from complex-shaped ice pristine and aggregation. This numerically powerful method, known as the characteristic basis function method (CBFM), is based on the generation of a new set of basis function adapted to the geometry of the scatterer, in order to significantly reduce the numerical size of the EM problem. Being better adapted to multiple excitation problems, the CBFM enables us to achieve a significant reduction in CPU time in comparison to DDScat, a widely used implementation of the discrete dipole approximation (DDA), while maintaining a satisfactory level of accuracy.

In this paper, an improved singular value decomposition-characteristic basis function method (SVD-CBFM) is proposed to efficiently solve multiple incident excitations electromagnetic scattering. ACA-SVD is applied to compress incident excitations to accelerate the generation of CBFs instead of compressing the CBFs in the conventional SVD-CBFM. The numerical example demonstrates that the proposed method is more efficiency than the conventional SVD-CBFM under the same precision conditions.

In this paper, scattering and radiation from scalable planar bodies are investigated in a wide frequency band. characteristic basis functions (CBFs) are utilized for this purpose with a different approach. The CBFs for the body are calculated at the highest frequency of interest and reused at other frequencies. As the frequency decreases, the unnecessary CBFs are removed from the basis set. The reduced impedance matrices generated at lower frequencies are also used for the calculation of the ones at higher frequencies. As a result, a significant reduction in CPU time is obtained with the proposed method. Numerical results for the problems of scattering from a square plate and radiation from a bowtie antenna are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.

The Message Passing Interface implementation ensures a reduction of the computing time and a distribution of the necessary memory to each processor. The 3D full-wave model for electromagnetic scattering from forest environment, based on the volumetric integral Equation formulation of the electric field, combined with the characteristic basis function method (CBFM) and implemented in Message Passing Interface (MPI) parallelization is described in this paper. This combination of the CBFM and the method of Moments (MoM) allows us to reduce significantly the size of the initial electromagnetic scattering problem.

Parallel implementation of the multilevel characteristic basis function method is discussed in this article. The use of this method enables us to solve very large electromagnetic problems in a direct manner via a recursive application of the characteristic basis function method. Furthermore, we show that, unlike the iterative schemes. the present method is very well suited for parallelization. Examples are presented to show that upto one million unknown problems can be solved on a workstation using the present scheme. and that the results show very good agreement with those derived by using analytical or fast multipole methods. This article presents an acceleration technique for the fist calculation of the impedance matrix elements in the method of moments in the case of using characteristic basis functions (CBFs). This technique is based on taking advantage of the smooth amplitude and phase behaviors of the fields generated by a CBF when the distance is sufficiently large. Computational efficiency is realized by calculating the reaction between a source-CBF and a test-CBF by first evaluating a sampling of the field at a sparse set of points, and then computing the fields at the rest via the use of interpolation. Thus, this procedure avoids the highly expensive integration in the source domain that is needed to calculate the radiated field in the entire test domain when following the conventional procedure. Phase unwrap prior to interpolation and the fast sample calculation scheme are detailed in the article. The technique has been validated by considering several examples involving Radar Cross Section computations. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Full wave analysis of the arbitrarily arranged spherical conformal microstrip antenna array

The surface integral equation is adopted to analyse the characteristics of the arbitrarily arranged spherical conformal microstrip antenna array based on the moment method. The Rao-Wilton-Glisson basis function and triangle function are used to simulate equivalent current on the patch and probe, respectively. A novel basis function at the junction of wire and surface is proposed to ensure continuity of the current from probe to patch. Then, the magnetic frill loop is used as excitation source in this study, and the field on the antenna surface generated by magnetic frill loop is deduced with the help of magnetic dyadic Green's functions on the surface of sphere. For the antenna array analysis, the characteristic basis function method combined with equivalent dipole method is employed to save the consumed memory and computation time. The characteristics of several pairs of conformal spherical microstrip antennas are presented and shown to be in good agreement with data from literatures and FEKO software. At last, a result comparison between the method in this study and FEKO software is drawn to show the efficiency of this method.

Numerical Analysis of Single Microstrip Antenna and Antennas Array in Spherically Layered Media

This communication presents a comprehensive numerical analysis of single microstrip antenna and antennas array in spherically layered media, using the method of moments (MoM). The curvilinear Rao-Wilton-Glisson (CRWG) triangular basis functions are employed to simulate the equivalent current on the antenna surface. First, the dyadic Green's functions using Debye potential are deduced. Then, their efficient computation procedures are carried out to improve calculation efficiency. Finally, the characteristic basis function method is employed to save memory and calculation time by reducing dimension of the impedance matrix. The results of this study are in good agreement with those of the FEKO software, and they show that the method proposed in this communication is more efficient than FEKO in the analysis process.
