Today it is very important to consider environmental effects in economic power dispatch problems as well. These kinds of problems, which are called environmental economic power dispatch problems, are multi-objective optimization problems. In the present study, in order to find the pareto-optimal results, the problem has been transformed into single-objective optimization problem by using weighted sum method. charged system search algorithm (CSS) has been used for the solution of the transformed problem. CSS algorithm has been applied to the 30 bus 6 generator (IEEE) test system by including transmission line losses. Also, economic power dispatch problem with prohibited operating zone which considers ramp rate limit, has been solved by CSS. B loss matrix has been used for the computation of the transmission line losses. In the study, the pareto-optimal solutions obtained for different weight values (w) have been compared with the solution values obtained by the other methods in literature. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Variant of the charged system search algorithm for the design of optimal linear phase finite impulse response filters

Digital signal filtering is one of the prime area which is frequently used in practical applications. In the class of digital filters, the prominent filters include - filters with finite impulse response (FIR) and filters with infinite impulse response (IIR). Low pass, high pass, band pass and band stop filters are the different types of filters that are currently employed for carrying out filtering actions. Filters are used for practical applications to reduce the noise incurred while processing the signals received, whether it may be an audio signal, video signal, bio-medical signal and so on. The key features for the design of filters include the optimization of coefficients and in turn the design of coefficients is based on attaining maximum stop band attenuation with less ripple rates. This paper proposes the soft computing based wavelet concept being introduced in the charged system search algorithm at the updation process. The scaling factor in the updation equation is implemented with a wavelet introduced to improve the exploration and exploitation capability of the algorithm. This introduction of wavelet into the algorithm results in faster convergence of the algorithm and proves its effectiveness in comparison with that of the other approaches as available in the literature.

Optimum design of real-size reinforced concrete bridge via charged system search algorithm trained by Nelder-Mead simplex

In this paper, an optimization method based on the combination of Nelder-Mead (NM) simplex concepts and charged system search algorithm (CSS) is proposed and called NM-CSS. NM, as a search technique, involves the iterative formation and transformation of a geometrically arranged set of points known as a simplex to uncover the optimal solution. By incorporating NM into metaheuristic algorithms, the convergence speed and solution quality can be notably boosted. Throughout each iteration, the solutions undergo various operations, including reflection, contraction, and expansion, to enhance the effectiveness of the algorithm. In this algorithm, produced solutions by the CSS are sorted and divided into two groups of good and bad solutions, and then the NM operators are applied to bad solutions to generate the possible best ones. The proposed algorithm is verified through some mathematical benchmark functions. Then, it is implemented on a real-size reinforced concrete bridge to reach an optimum design. To recognize the effective parameters in the design of structural components of reinforced concrete bridges, a sensitivity analysis is carried out. The total cost of materials in piers and the deck is defined as an objective function, and the cross-section area of structural elements and longitudinal reinforcements are chosen as design variables. The results of simulations represent the stability and robustness of the proposed NM-CSS method compared to standard CSS. In other words, utilizing the proposed NM-CSS algorithm in an optimum design of the piers and deck results in saving %3.685 and %2.084 of costs, respectively, in comparison with the results of the standard CSS.

On the application of peridynamics to crack detection in membranes using an upgraded metaheuristic

In this paper we present a new approach based on peridynamics (PD) for identification of crack position and length in membranes, as one of the most important topics in structural health monitoring. PD is known to provide rather realistic results in problems involving crack nucleation and propagation and requires no special treatment for consideration of cracks;therefore it is employed in this work for computation of in-plane response of the cracked membranes under impact load conditions. To identify the crack characteristics, the difference between measured and computed maximum displacements of some predetermined points is considered as the objective function. An optimization step, using the charged system search (CSS) algorithm, is then used to minimize the objective function. To increase the efficiency of CSS, the algorithm is upgraded using a sinusoidal search phase. To evaluate the proposed approach, four scenarios of crack placement are considered. Noisy conditions are also considered in each scenario. The results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach in determining the position, orientation, and length of the crack. Also, the upgraded CSS algorithm consistently outperforms the original CSS algorithm.

Optimal Design of Magnetorheological Damper Based on Tuning Bouc-Wen Model Parameters Using Hybrid algorithms

This paper presents a useful approach to optimally design magnetorheological (MR) dampers used in structural buildings. To fulfill this aim, damper parameters are regarded as the design variables whose values can be obtained through an optimization process. To improve the quality of searching for the optimum parameters of MR dampers, charged system search (CSS) and grey wolf (GW) algorithms, two of the most widely utilized meta-heuristic algorithms, are used together, and hybrid CSS-GW is presented. To show the authenticity and robustness of the new algorithm in solving optimization problems, some benchmark test functions are tested, at first. Then, an eleven-story benchmark building equipped with 3 MR dampers is considered to get the optimum design of the MR damper using the hybrid CSS-GW. Results show that the developed hybrid algorithm can successfully figure out the optimum parameters of the MR dampers.

Damage-based optimization of large-scale steel structures

A damage-based seismic design procedure for steel frame structures is formulated as an optimization problem, in which minimization of the initial construction cost is treated as the objective of the problem. The performance constraint of the design procedure is to achieve "repairable" damage state for earthquake demands that are less severe than the design ground motions. The Park-Ang damage index is selected as the seismic damage measure for the quantification of structural damage. The charged system search (CSS) algorithm is employed as the optimization algorithm to search the optimum solutions. To improve the time efficiency of the solution algorithm, two simplifying strategies are adopted: first, SDOF idealization of multi-story building structures capable of estimating the actual seismic response in a very short time;second, fitness approximation decreasing the number of fitness function evaluations. The results from a numerical application of the proposed framework for designing a twelve-story 3D steel frame structure demonstrate its efficiency in solving the present optimization problem.

Hybrid teaching-learning-based optimization for solving engineering and mathematical problems

In this work, a new and effective algorithm called hybrid teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) and charged system search (CSS) algorithms (HTC) are proposed to solve engineering and mathematical problems. The CSS is inspired by Coulomb and Gauss's electrostatic laws of physics as well as the Newtonian mechanic laws of motion. The TLBO is inspired by the interaction between teacher and student in a classroom. Usually, the TLBO gets trapped in the local optimal due to the lack of a system for measuring the distance between the student and the optimal point. In order to solve this problem, the CSS algorithm, which is based on the electrical physics laws, is utilized. In the CSS algorithm, each factor is stored under the influence of the best local and global positions, and it is used in subsequent iterations as the possible optimal answers. In fact, this leads to a better balance between exploration and exploitation. In order to validate the proposed method, the CEC2021 and CEC2005 mathematical functions are optimized. Additionally, to show the applicability of the proposed algorithm and to evaluate its performance and convergence rate, several benchmark truss structures are optimized. The weight of the structural elements is taken into account as the objective function, which is optimized under displacement and stress constraints. The results of the proposed algorithm are compared with some other well-known meta-heuristic methods. The results show that the hybrid HTC algorithm improved the convergence rate and quickly obtained the optimal and desired design. The hybrid HTC algorithm can be adapted to solve other complex mathematical and optimization problems.

Shape optimization of arch dams under earthquake loading using meta-heuristic algorithms

This paper presents efficiency of three meta-heuristic algorithms for large-scale shape optimization of double curvature arch dams under seismic loading condition with different constraints such as failure, stability and geometrical limitations. The earthquake load is considered by time variant ground acceleration applied in the upstream-downstream direction of the arch dam. Here, the Westergaard method is used to include the dam-reservoir interaction. For optimization, the charged system search (CSS), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and a hybrid CSS and PSO (CSS-PSO) are utilized. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the meta-heuristic algorithms for optimal shape design of arch dams. Comparative studies illustrates that the superiority CSS-PSO algorithm compared to the standard PSO and CSS. A parametric study is also conducted to investigate the effect of water depth and earthquake intensity on the cost optimization of the arch dams.

Web Page Interface Optimization Based on Nature-Inspired algorithms

This article describes how the conversion rate of a web page depends on the interface usability degree. Optimization of existing interfaces as the matter of improving their usability faces a number of difficulties. In the first place, the unified objective function selection method for such optimization is not set up;that is resulting in necessity of qualified experts' participation for its implementation. In the second place, the corresponding optimization problem will have a high dimension, which makes the classical optimization methods unsuitable for the problem solution. Nature-inspired algorithms have undeniable advantages in comparison with classical optimization algorithms for solving high-dimensional problems, such as for example the optimization of web interfaces by their usability criterion. In this article, new web page interface optimization methods based on nature-inspired algorithms are proposed. In particular, genetic algorithms (GAs), artificial bee colony algorithms (ABC), and charged system search algorithms (CSSs) were analyzed. The conducted experiments revealed the advantages of these algorithms for posed problem solutions and showed research prospects in this direction.
