The advances in microelectronic engineering have rendered massively distributed computing networks practical and affordable, This paper describes one application of this distributed computing paradigm to the analysis and design of microwave circuits, A distributed computing network, constructed in the form of a neural network, is developed to automate the operations typically performed on a normalized Smith chart. Examples showing the use of this computing network for impedance matching and stabilizing are provided.

The computation of logic-stage delays is a fundamental sub-problem for many EDA tasks. Although accurate delays can be obtained via circuit simulation, we must estimate the input assignments that will maximize the delay. With conventional methods, it is not feasible to estimate the delay for all input assignments on large sub-networks, so previous approaches have relied on heuristics. We present a symbolic algorithm that enables efficient computation of the Elmore delay under all input assignments and delay refinement using circuit-simulation. We analyze the Elmore estimate with three metrics using data extracted from symbolic timing simulations of industrial circuits.

To address the challenge of high computational complexity in large-scale circuit analysis, the circuit Transfer Matrix Method is proposed, drawing on the strong parallels between electrical and mechanical systems. This method builds upon the Transfer Matrix Method for Multibody Systems, which has seen significant breakthroughs and widespread use in complex mechanical systems, extending its application to circuit analysis. Unlike traditional model-reduction techniques, the circuit transfer matrix method employs the concepts of 'transfer' of system state vectors and the 'assembly' of transfer matrices, effectively reducing the order of the system's equations and significantly improving computational efficiency. This reduced-order model allows designers to analyze and synthesize a system's dynamic behavior within a limited design cycle more efficiently. The text presents the computational workflow of the circuit Transfer Matrix Method, from the definition of state vectors to the invocation and assembly of transfer matrices, followed by the solution of the transfer equations. The fundamental component transfer matrices are derived upon which the method for deriving the transfer matrices of combined elements is provided, along with a corresponding example. Subsequently, examples are provided to illustrate the detailed computational processes for linear AC analysis, transient analysis of linear chain systems, transient analysis of linear closed-loop systems, and transient analysis of general nonlinear systems. The accuracy of the algorithm is validated by comparisons with methods based on SPICE. Finally, a comparison of the algorithm speed with SPICE reveals that SPICE has an asymptotic time complexity of O(n(3)), while the circuit Transfer Matrix Method has a complexity of only O(n), significantly enhancing computational efficiency.

The basic structure of conventional Muller C element is studied and the output errors caused by node parasitic capacitors are analysed in this letter. In order to avoid such errors, an improved C element with two inverted ratio MOS transistors added is proposed to control high resistance nodes of the circuit. To reduce the power consumption of C element, two resistors are added. The proposed C element has been designed in 28 nm CMOS process and 2.5 V devices are adopted. The simulation results show that proposed C element avoids such errors and the size of the layout is 67.33 mu m2.

Interconnect diagnosis is an important problem in very large scale integration (VLSI), multichip module (MCM) and printed circuit board (PCB) production. The problem is to detect and locate all the shorts, opens and stuck-at faults among a set of nets using the minimum number of parallel tests. In this paper, we present worst-case optimal algorithms and lower bounds to several open problems in interconnect diagnosis.

EXACT SIMULATION AND SENSITIVITY analysis OF MULTIPLEXING NETWORKS

This paper presents a novel approach to the simulation and sensitivity analysis of multiplexing networks. All computations are performed efficiently utilizing the concept of forward and reverse analysis which is elegant and effective in cascaded circuit analysis. Formulas are derived for such responses as input or output reflection coefficient, common port and channel output port return losses, insertion loss, gain slope, and group delay. Exact sensitivities w.r.t. all variables of interest, including frequency, are evaluated. The fundamental assumption is that the transmission matrices for the individual components of the network and their sensitivities w.r.t. possible variables inside them are available. An explicit algorithm is provided describing the details of the computational aspects of our theory. The formulas are applied to the optimal design of practical contiguous or noncontiguous band multiplexer consisting of multicavity filters distributed along a waveguide manifold. An example of optimizing a practical 12 channel, 12-GHz contiguous band multiplexer without dummy channels, which is the state-of-the-art structure used as the output multiplexer in satellite transponders, is presented.

DETERMINING THE ZEROS AND POLES OF LINEAR circuit NETWORKS USING FUNCTION APPROXIMATION

A numerical method for determining the significant singularities corresponding to the network function of a linear circuit is presented. This method is based upon function approximation of both the magnitude and phase of frequency response data. A linear network function of the form of a ratio of two polynomials in the Laplacian variable s is assumed. The frequency response data are approximated using the nonlinear least-squares algorithm of Levenberg and Marquardt. The polynomials are then factored into roots and those singularities having a negligible effect are removed. ZAP, a computer program implementing this method, has proven to be a valuable design aid for performing pole-zero analysis in the design of linear integrated circuits.

A method is proposed for improving the performance of current dumping audio amplifiers that allows an increase in the distortion rejection ratio and (or) desensitizes the circuit balance condition. The distortion reduction properties of the existing topologies are reviewed. A novel approach is outlined and extended to show a prototype amplifier circuit in detail. The design is supported by a range of simulations and measurements to validate the technique.

A rigorous analysis is carried out of a typical dual-directional coupler network analyser to demonstrate the application of a new circuit analysis technique based on the principle of matrix renormalisation, described in a companion paper, to cascaded multiport networks. The manner in which previously published calibration equations were derived is explained in detail. The analysis is carried out external to the network in terms of voltage excitation and the voltage responses at the accessible ports of the network under mismatched conditions. Each section of the network is represented by a generalised scattering matrix defined in terms of voltage-wave S-parameters with complex normalisation. In this manner, a knowledge of the internal flow paths of the network is unnecessary, in contrast to the flowgraph method employing the nontouching loop rule. The analysis shows that current methods of network analysis, based on the power-flow concept, have given rise to certain misconceptions because source mismatch does not contribute to systematic error-as is generally believed. In addition, these misconceptions appear to have led to the adoption of general design principles for network analysers that are unnecessarily complicated because the effects of mismatches, discontinuities and poor directivity can be completely eliminated by calibration in terms of air-dielectric line standards, provided that all port mismatches are invariant between the reflection and transmission modes of operation.
