Dispersion characteristics of printed circuit transmission lines such as finlines, shielded microstrips, slotlines, suspended striplines, coupled slotlines, and coupled striplines computed by the transverse modal analysis were reported in a previous paper. Application of the transverse modal analysis to compute the characteristic impedances of these printed circuit transmission lines is illustrated in this paper. Favorable comparison with various published data demonstrates the outstanding accuracy achieved by this technique. Combining the characteristic impedance computation with the dispersion results, the transverse modal analysis can be employed for solving various problems in printed circuit transmission lines.

The problem of analyzing the stability of periodic equilibrium regimes in nonlinear microwave circuits is tackled by a general-purpose computer-aided approach. By means of a perturbation technique, the search for instabilities is reduced to a generalized eigenvalue equation expressed in matrix form, and is then carried out by Nyquist's analysis. The use of a vector processor allows the computer time requirements to be kept well within reasonable limits, even in the case of large-size problems. In perspective, this could open the way to the complementation of existing nonlinear CAD packages by an on-line facility for automatic stability analysis.

A new equivalent MOSFET representation of a HEMT to analytically model non-linear charge control for simulation of HEMT devices and circuits

It is shown that, from the point of view of the behavior of the charge and position of the Two-Dimensional Electron Gas (2-DEG) as a function of gate-source and drain-source voltages, the complex High Electron Mobility Transistor (HEMT) can be regarded as a simple Buried-Channel (BC) MOSFET, Thus, the characteristics of a HEMT, namely channel charge and capacitance/transconductance as a function of gate voltage below and above threshold are akin those of a BC MOSFET, Hence, there are discrepancies in the conventional Surface Channel MOSFET-like approach to HEMT modeling, Existing simple BC MOSFET de and ac models can be used for on-paper analysis and computer aided simulation of HEMT devices and circuits, if the HEMT is represented by an equivalent BC MOSFET as derived in this paper. The new representation can be useful for modeling of short-channel HEMT phenomena.

Voltage sags, also known as dips, are important to industrial reliability. Modern process controls are often sensitive to voltage sags. The combination of voltage sags and sensitive equipment may cause significant production outages. Less sensitive equipment may be available, but the designer must know sag characteristics of the electric system to make the best choices between reliability and equipment cost. This paper shows how to predict voltage sag performance of electric supply systems by combining a new analysis method with reliability data. The analysis method is proposed for a new chapter in the next revision of IEEE Std 493.

This paper presents several new algorithms which are used to implement two recently published uniqueness theorems applicable to nonlinear resistive circuits containing independent sources, two-terminal resistors and linear controlled sources. These programs are novel in that they allow a computer to test directly for qualitative behavior. The algorithms and the two programs which use them are described and results are presented for some examples from the original papers.

The effect on linear circuit response of simultaneous changes in a number(m)of components must often be computed. Two efficient methods for predicting this effect are examined. It is shown that the computational cost of predicting the effect of each set is approximatelyG_m, whereG_mis the cost of a Gaussian elimination of anm \\times mmatrix. However, if the sets represent combinations of relatively few individual component changes, then systematic exploration is shown to reduce the computational cost per set to the order of 2.

Signal flow theory offers a computationally efficient and accurate design-oriented alternative to traditional feedback network analysis techniques. The latter often suffer from burdensome algebra and questionable approximations that render the impact of a given feedback loop on achievable network performance obscure. Unlike the classical literature, which formulates signal flow theory in terms of relatively vague algebraic concepts, the author develops signal flow theory and associated circuit analysis methods exclusively in terms of elementary network theoretic principles. Aside from confirming the circuit analysis property of signal flow techniques, the new perspective underlying their theoretical development offers considerable insight into the genuinely difficult problem of implementing stable, reliable, and effective feedback.< >

SYMBOLIC analysis-METHODS AND APPLICATIONS FOR ANALOG circuitS - A TUTORIAL OVERVIEW

This tutorial paper gives an overview of the history and present state of the art in symbolic analysis of electronic circuits at the so-called circuit level. Symbolic analysis is defined as a technique generating a closed-form analytic expression for a circuit characteristic with the circuit's elements represented by symbols. Such analytic information complements the results from numerical simulations. The paper then describes the different application areas of symbolic analysis for the design of analog circuits. Symbolic analysis is mainly used as a means to obtain insight into a circuit's behavior, to generate analytic models for automated circuit sizing, and in applications requiring the repetitive evaluation of circuit characteristics. Next, the present capabilities and limitations of symbolic analysis, both in functionality and efficiency, are discussed. The major symbolic analysis methods are presented, and algorithmic details are provided for symbolic approximation, hierarchical decomposition, and symbolic distortion analysis. Finally, existing symbolic simulators are compared, and directions for future research are pointed out.

Timing analysis speed-up using a hierarchical and a multimode approach

In this paper, we examine the impact of using the hierarchy of the design and multiple delay models defined at different abstraction levels to speed up the timing performance evaluation of VLSI circuits. The algorithms implemented in the Dynamic and Hierarchical Timing analysis (DHTA) tool are described, DHTA rapidly identifies the critical portions of the circuit at high hierarchical levels with rough delay models. These portions are then successively studied at more detailed levels for maximal accuracy. The effects on processing time of exploiting the design hierarchy and using several delay models are characterized. The implementation of DHTA demonstrates experimentally the benefits of using a mixed-mode approach for timing analysis. We show that considering all available hierarchical levels may degrade the computing time and heuristics are proposed to select the hierarchical levels which generally lead to a speed-up.
