A KNOWLEDGE-BASED AID FOR DC circuit analysis

A knowledge-based expert system is described which guides the student user to a method most suited to a given circuit problem. The expert system shell, which runs on a personal computer, is briefly described. The principles underlying the knowledge base are discussed. Validation of the knowledge base was carried out by posing a range of problems and comparing the suggested techniques with those used by an experienced instructor. Illustrative examples are given. It is concluded that the system is of potential benefit to students undertaking a first course in electric circuits. The knowledge base contains 71 decisions, 31 questions, and 71 rules.< >

Steady-state algorithm for switching power electronic devices

Obtaining the steady-state operation of a power electronic device by means of brute force computer simulation is not feasible in many practical cases. Fast steady-state algorithms that formulate the steady-state problem as a boundary problem and solve it using Newton's method have been proposed to overcome this difficulty. These algorithms are known as shooting algorithms. An extension of the shouting algorithm for piecewise linear circuits is provided. The complete Jarobian matrix that takes into account the switching instants variation is analytically derived fur a state variable formulation of the steady-state problem of a piecewise linear circuit. A computer program PWiseSS based on this algorithm is used to solve a previously proposed test circuit of difficult convergence as well as to solve a realistic six-pulse converter of interest to the power electronics engineer.

A hierarchical approach to the problem of symbolic circuit analysis of large-scale circuits is presented in this paper, The methodology has been implemented in a computer program called SCAPP (Symbolic circuit analysis Program with Partitioning). The method solves the problem by utilizing a hierarchical network approach and the sequence of expressions concept rather than a topological approach and the single expression idea which have dominated symbolic analysis in the past. The result is a linear growth (for real circuits) in the number of terms in the symbolic solutions for the network approach versus the exponential growth exhibited by traditional methods, The analysis methodology uses a Reduced Modified Nodal analysis (RMNA) technique that allows the characterization of symbolic networks in terms of only a small subset of the network variables (external variables), The analysis algorithm is most efficient when network partitioning is used, Partitioning results in a reduction in the number of terms in the symbolic solutions.

SENSITIVITY COMPUTATION IN PIECEWISE APPROXIMATE circuit SIMULATION

Both direct and adjoint methods are applied to the computation of time-domain transient sensitivities in the already efficient SPECS piecewise approximate circuit simulation environment. By exploiting the event-driven nature of SPECS, the computation, storage, and interpolation of the Jacobians is not required to obtain sensitivities. Both direct and adjoint methods require only a marginal computational overhead and provide equivalent results. The choice of the method to employ depends on the ratio of the number of outputs to the number of parameters. More parameters favor the adjoint method and more outputs favor the direct. The overall efficiency of both SPECS and its time-domain sensitivity extension allows it to be applied to realistic circuits that due to their large size had previously made such analysis impractical. Simulation results on industrial circuits of up to 1500 MOS transistors show that transient sensitivities can be efficiently computed for large circuits.

FIX TO NEGATIVE OUTPUT CONDUCTANCE PROBLEM IN BSIM2 MODEL

The long-standing negative output conductance problem observed in the BSIM2 model, which causes convergence problems in circuit simulation, has been studied and resolved. The problem is identified to be related to both parameter extraction methodology and model equations. We found a redundant boundary condition in the saturation region for the optimization of output characteristics. We found that a problematic channel length modulation equation also contributes to the problem. The fix to this problem not only eliminates the negative conductances in the simulated output characteristics of long-channel transistors but also preserves fits to output characteristics of short-channel transistors. The fix, at the same time, speeds up the parameter extraction process by 20% by eliminating five of the model parameters.

A class-E de-to-de converter with half-wave controlled current rectifier is proposed, It's output voltage Is controlled by the conduction angle of the rectifier switch at constant switching frequency. Zero voltage switching for all the switches can be maintained from full load to no load. Its steady state characteristics are analyzed and the effects of the circuit parameters are studied. Some extensions of the proposed converter are also discussed. The analysis is verified by PSPICE simulation and an experimental prototype.

An algorithm suitable for the computer aided analysis of geometrical and resistive discontinuities present in microstrip interconnections on silicon integrated circuit substrates is presented. The distortion and dispersion of an electrical pulse, caused by such discontinuities, as it propagates along the microstrip interconnect is investigated in detail. Studies carried out to assess the use of superconducting tracks for the interconnections in integrated circuits, in the presence of modal dispersion and geometry dependent discontinuities, are also presented. The numerical results are demonstrated on realistic microstrip models for the interconnects which are selected from a practical VLSI prototype.

The ENIAC (Electronic Numerical integrator and Computer), the first electronic computing machine to be built, is a very large device (containing 18 000 vacuum tubes) compounded out of a few basic types of computing circuits. The design principles that were followed in order to insure reliable operation of the electronic computer are presented, and the basic types of computing circuits are analyzed. Most of the design work on component circuits was devoted to constructing reliable memory circuits (flip-flops) and adding circuits (counters). These are treated in detail. The ENIAC performs the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square-rooting, and the looking lip of function values automatically The units which perform these operations, the units which rake numerical data into and out of the machine, and those which control the over-all operation are described. The technique of combining the basic electronic circuits to perform these functions is illustrated by three typical computing circuits: the addition circuit, a programming circuit, and the multiplication circuit.
