Inconsistent initial conditions and/or Dirac impulses can appear in networks with ideal switches, and in such cases simulators may give wrong results. To avoid errors, many simulators do not allow ideal switching, This paper presents simple CAD methods which can handle correctly, and automatically, inconsistent initial conditions of linear as well as nonlinear networks, For easy understanding, all explanations are done on simple examples, with the minimum of mathematics.

Switched-Capacitor decimators combining low-sensitivity ladder structures with high-speed polyphase networks

High-order Switched-Capacitor (SC) decimation circuits that achieve high input sampling ratios while minimizing the required operating speed of the amplifiers have been previously designed by cascading simpler first- and second-order decimation building blocks. This paper proposes alternative SC decimators combining low-sensitivity ladder structures together with highspeed polyphase networks. This is based on the transformation of the state equation of a conventional SC ladder filter clocked at the higher sampling frequency MF(s) into a multirate transfer function yielding a decimating structure with the same filtering characteristic and input sampling frequency of MF(s) but where the output sampling frequency is reduced to only F-s to allow more time for the settling of the amplifiers. Two design examples of low-pass and band-pass SC decimators are given to illustrate the proposed design methodology. Detailed computer-based sensitivity analyses are carried out to evaluate the performance of the resulting circuits.

High-yield design technologies for InAlAs/InGaAs/InP-HEMT analog-digital ICs

Sixty-GHz-band two-stage monolithic low-noise amplifiers and ultrahigh-speed SCFL static frequency dividers have been fabricated using the same InAlAs/InGaAs/InP HEMT process. This process assures uniformity by taking advantage of a 0.1-mu m T-shaped gate and an InP recess-etch stopper, circuits are designed with priorities on stable operation, high yield, and uniformity, For the low-noise amplifier, the stabilization is optimized so as to minimize noise for the design gain while maintaining stability at all frequencies, The resultant amplifiers show a fabrication yield of 75% and at 62 GHz have a noise figure of 4.3 +/- 0.19 dB and a gain of 11.8 +/- 0.25 dB, For the frequency divider, the load resistance is set to be large enough to assure stable operation (circuit simulation shows that increasing the load resistance has little effect on the maximum toggle frequency), Frequency dividers designed with the optimum load resistance for stable and high-speed operation show a fabrication yield of 63% and have a maximum toggle frequency of 36.7 +/- 0.55 GHz, These results demonstrate the feasibility of using this HEMT process to monolithically integrate analog and digital circuits on one chip.

A multifrequency technique for frequency response computation with application to switched-capacitor circuits with nonlinearities

Frequency domain analysis of switched-capacitor and other clocked circuits including nonlinearities is a difficult problem requiring special attention, Conventional nonlinear frequency response methods are computationally intensive and time consuming for circuits with large transient components, In this paper, we present a novel technique for the rapid estimation of the nonlinear frequency response of switched-capacitor circuits, The analysis technique is formulated using a multifrequency sinusoidal excitation to drive the circuit into its steady-state condition, Then, the fundamental components are extracted using a frequency-directed Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) in order to construct the frequency response, The key steps of this approach include the selection of noninterfering input frequencies and the determination of properly scaled input amplitudes, In addition, a method is proposed to reach steady-state quickly and to detect the steady-state condition for use in conjunction with the multifrequency approach described here.

Harmonic and intermodulation performance of analogue-to-digital converters with multibit errors and additive dither

This paper presents a simple approach for mathematical modelling of real analogue-to-digital converters (ADCs) with multibit errors and dither. Using this model, expressions are obtained for the harmonic and intermodulation performance of a real ADC excited by a multisinusoidal signal. While these expressions involve infinite summations, they always converge. The special case of a two-tone half-scale equal-amplitude input signal to a real ADC is considered in detail and it is shown that the infinite summations can be converted into finite ones in this special case. Numerical results obtained from a 5-bit ADC are presented and discussed. The results show that while all forms of dither will linearise the staircase characteristic of the ADC, thus improving its intermodulation performance, they may degrade its harmonic and intermodulation performance resulting from the multibit errors. The feasibility of cancellation of output harmonic and intermodulation products is discussed.

Compact waveguide bends with low return loss over the full waveguide band width are realized by placing properly selected discontinuities inside the curve. The component is designed by using an extremely efficient computer code which employs the local modes approach to analyze curved sections, while discontinuities are rigorously accounted for by considering their multimode equivalent circuit. A simple technique to select the appropriate matching elements is described and examples of full-band matched bends are provided.

*** is the union of the DELIGHT interactive optimization-based computer-aided-design system and the SPICE circuit analysis program. With the *** tool, circuit designers can take advantage of recent powerful optimization algorithms and a methodology that emphasizes designer intuition and man-machine interaction. Designer and computer are complementary in adjusting parameters of electronic circuits automatically to improve their performance criteria and to study complex tradeoffs between multiple competing objectives, while simultaneously satisfying multiple-constraint specifications. The optimization runs much more efficiently than previously because the SPICE program used has been enhanced to perform DC, AC, and transient sensitivity computation. Industrial analog and digital circuits have been redesigned using this tool, yielding substantial improvement in circuit performance.< >

Educational approach to transient analysis of electric circuits by simulating equations

When studying an electric circuit, one can describe the circuit using equations. The equations can be coded into a computer program and iterated with fixed time step through time of interest, which generates simulation results. A specific methodology is needed for the purpose. The methodology of simulation of equations is developed and presented. Using this approach there is no black box (a general-purpose simulation tool) between the student or an engineer who is simulating the circuit, and the circuit itself. The use of black boxes - general-purpose simulators - is of great value when optimising circuits, but they can leave black holes when it is about understanding circuit principles and/or exploring new circuit ideas. Simulating equations leaves no space for simulation noise. The circuit is DC-wise analysed at sequential moments in time. Equations, which describe circuit components that store energy (capacitors and inductors), connect in time sequential DC analyses. The simulation of equations adds to the understanding of existing circuits and it has potential in the creation of new circuits. Time- and/or signal- and/or environment-dependent devices can be easily included in the simulation of equations. Test cases show a perfect match between simulated and known results for the analysed circuits. Programming efforts for the simulation of equations are at a manageable level for even a moderately proficient programmer.

iTEM: A temperature-dependent electromigration reliability diagnosis tool

In this paper, we present a new electromigration reliability diagnosis tool (iTEM) for CMOS VLSI circuits. Unlike previous electromigration reliability tools, iTEM can estimate the interconnect temperature rise due to joule heating and heat conduction from the substrate using a newly developed lumped thermal model, By including the temperature effect, iTEM provides much more accurate electromigration reliability diagnosis. Moreover, it is computationally efficient, and can analyze circuit layouts containing tens of thousands of transistors on a desktop workstation.

BROADSIDE COUPLED STRIP INSET DIELECTRIC GUIDE AND ITS DIRECTIONAL COUPLER APPLICATION

A theoretical and numerical method is presented for the analysis of broadside-coupled strip inset dielectric guide, The method of analysis is based on an integral equation formulation and Galerkin's procedure, Besides propagation constants for two fundamental and higher order modes, the characteristic impedances for the two fundamental modes are calculated using the total propagating power and the longitudinal strip currents. The propagation characteristics of the two fundamental modes are then used to compute 4-port circuit parameters that are essential for accurate analysis and design of coupled line circuits, The effects of various structural parameters on the S-parameters are investigated and it is found that this broadside coupled strip IDG structure is useful for the realization of the directional couplers, Examples of strong and weak directional couplers are given, Furthermore, the propagation constants and S-parameters of coaxially excited coupled strips are measured, and are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis.
