The paper describes a method for solving steady-state and transient electromagnetic-field problems in certain multi-region induction devices, which uses only a very small amount of analysis. In general, the device is modelled by means of a nonuniform transmission line consisting of a large number of T-circuits in cascade. circuit-analysis computer packages can be used to solve for the circuit quantities, and hence the field quantities, at all nodes in the line. Neither higher transcendental functions nor operational methods are required.

An improved DC parameter-extraction methodology for bipolar transistors is presented. The method uses a new step-by-step strategy based on measurements made under two saturation conditions only: zero voltage and zero current. This method minimises the self-heating effects without using pulsed techniques, and it is suitable for medium-power devices. Special emphasis has been placed on the determination of resistive parameters. The proposed method fits better the experimental data than the parameterextraction methodologies in use today. The relative r.m.s. error decreases from a value higher than 10% to 1% at high current levels.

SSCNAP is a program developed on a microcomputer for symbolic analysis of ideal K-phase switched capacitor circuits. Symbolic transfer functions and sensitivity functions can be obtained by using SSCNAP. It can also calculate the poles and their sensitivities in an SC circuit. In the paper, an efficient computer method for symbolic analysis of linear SC circuits is described. No topological or duty-cycle constraints have been imposed on the circuits. An example is included to illustrate the capabilities of the SSCNAP program.

A new approach for the analysis of nonlinear microwave circuits, the named frequency-domain continuation method, is presented. It allows the unified, but nevertheless efficient, computer analysis of autonomous and forced nonlinear circuits by utilizing the globalization properties of the continuation technique, and provides stability information in parallel. Its theoretical background and relation to bifurcation theory is outlined. Its high potential is demonstrated by application to problems with single- and multiple-frequency input, strong nonlinearities, hysteresis phenomena and subharmonics.

Analytical solution of lossless field-excited multiconductor transmission lines is presented, The equivalent circuit of a multiconductor transmission line with distributed sources is reduced to a simple lumped parameter circuit with independent voltage sources at both the ends of the transmission line, The transient source waveforms are analytically estimated for exponential time dependence of the external field, as EMP, ESD, and lightning, The method is suitable for a direct implementation in computer-aided circuit analysis codes and enables a very fast analysis for any load condition, Some numerical results are presented for single conductor and multiconductor lines excited by an EMP plane-wave field.

A functional/behavioural simulator is described, in which the system to be simulated is modelled by defining its hierarchy and by specifying the descriptive function of the behaviour of its components. The functional model, based on the definition ofstrictandnonstrict functions, makes it possible to introduce and formally justify a simulation mechanism for safe sequencing of concurrent events in the presence of zero-delay components. Static and dynamic component instances are allowed, and the system can be simulated at different hierarchical levels, specified by the user for each component. The simulation algorithm is based on an event-driven mechanism and has been implemented in the language C.

Fast and simple method to find all equilibrium points of dynamic 1-D arrays

A very fast and simple algorithm for finding all equilibrium points of dynamic one-dimensional (1-D) arrays, constituted by resistively coupled dynamic piecewise-linear cells (for example., oscillators), is presented. This algorithm is based on the recursive construction of a uni-path v-i characteristic derived from the associated resistive array, obtained by opening the capacitors and shortening the inductors within dynamic cells. Some examples show the efficiency of the algorithm. About 30000 equilibrium points of a 100-cell array are determined within a few seconds with a common PC.

An approach that combines the finite-element and boundary-element methods is extended for the analysis of arbitrarily shaped discontinuities in a multilayer slab waveguide. Here all the eigenmodes, namely, guided modes, substrate radiation modes, and substrate-cover radiation modes are taken into account, which are constructed by extending a matrix method. Computed results are given for the rigorous analysis of the coupling between a five- or six-layer laser and a four-layer passive waveguide in a monolithically integrated circuit. Some of the results are for multimode incidence. The coupling is one of the most important discontinuity problems in practice, and so the usefulness of the proposed approach is confirmed.

EM-ANN models for microstrip vias and interconnects in dataset circuits

A novel approach for accurate and efficient modeling of monolithic microwave/millimeter wave integrated circuit (MMIC) components by using electromagnetically trained artificial neural network (EM-ANN) software modules is presented, Full-wave EM analysis is employed to characterize MMIC components, Structures for simulation are chosen using design of experiments (DOE) methodology. EM-ANN models are then trained using physical parameters as inputs and S-parameters as outputs. Once trained, the EM-ANN models are inserted into a commercial microwave circuit simulator where they provide results approaching the accuracy of the EM simulation tool used for characterization of the MMIC components without increasing the analysis time significantly. The proposed technique is capable of providing simulation models for MMIC components where models do not exist or are not accurate over the desired region of operation, The approach has been verified by developing models for microstrip vias and interconnects in dataset circuits, A new hybrid (as) modeling approach which makes use of existing approximate models for components is introduced and shown to be a more efficient method for developing EM-ANN models, An example of using EM-ANN models to optimize the component geometry is included.

Transmission-line theory approach to solution of state equations for linear-lumped circuits

Linear-lumped circuits containing capacitors and/or inductors are described by differential equations. In computer-aided circuit analysis, these equations are discretized in time, thus being reduced to approximate formulas involving samples of voltages and currents. It is shown that these relations can be interpreted as exact equations for networks containing transmission lines. Hence, some features of the approximate formulas gain a clear physical interpretation. In particular, convergence and energy balance properties of the formulas become obvious, confirming advantages of the trapezoidal rule over all other formulas.
