The evaluation of software performance in the early stages of the software life cycle is important and it has been widely studied. In the software model specification, class diagram is the important object-oriented software specification model. The measures based on a class diagram have been widely studied to evaluate quality of software such as complexity, maintainability, reuse capability, etc. However the software performance evaluation based on class model has not been widely studied, especially for object-oriented design of embedded software. Therefore, in this paper we propose a new approach to directly evaluate the software performance based on class diagrams. From a class diagram, we determine the parameters which are used to evaluate and build formula of the measures such as Size of class Variables, Size of class Methods, Size of Instance Variables, Size of Instance Methods, etc. Then, we do analysis of the dependence of performance on these measures and build the performance evaluation function from class diagram. Thereby we can choose the best class diagram based on this evaluation function.

Software development life cycle is a structured process, including the definition of user requirements specification, the system design, and programming. The design task comprises the transfer of natural language specifications into models. The class diagram of Unified Modeling Language has been considered as one of the most useful diagrams. It is a formal description of user's requirements and serves as inputs to the developers. The automated extraction of UML class diagram from natural language requirements is a highly challenging task. This paper explains our vision of an automated tool for class diagram generation from user requirements expressed in natural language. Our new approach amalgamates the statistical and pattern recognition properties of natural language processing techniques. More than 1000 patterns are defined for the extraction of the class diagram concepts. Once these concepts are captured, an XML Metadata Interchange file is generated and imported with a Computer-Aided Software Engineering tool to build the corresponding UML class diagram. Research on accessing databases using natural languages usually utilizes an intermediate logical form for the mapping process from natural languages to database query languages. However, there is still much that needs to be accomplished to bridge the gap between natural language constructs and database schemas. In this paper, we present a translation scheme for transforming natural language queries into relational algebra through the class diagram representations. Based on a logical form developed by extending the UML class diagram notations, a transformation model is presented to support the automatic transformation of natural language queries into relational algebra by employing appropriate natural language processing techniques and object-oriented analysis methods. The proposed logical form has the advantage that it can be mapped from natural language constructs by referring to the conceptual schema modeled by class diagrams, and can be efficiently transformed into relational algebra for query execution. We believe the whole process could offer a clear and natural framework for processing natural language queries to retrieve data from database systems. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Taming the frame problem: an automated approach for robust UML class diagram specification and verification

It is vital to have precise specifications and verification of UML class diagrams to ensure the correctness of complex software systems. However, current specification and verification methods often face a challenge known as the frame problem. This problem occurs due to incomplete operation specifications that can lead to unintended system behavior. To tackle this issue, we have developed an automated solution to autonomously identify and define frame conditions, effectively minimizing the frame problem's impact on class diagram verification. Frame conditions are explicit contracts that meticulously outline the permissible effects of operations within the system. Our approach carefully analyzes the behavioral blueprint of a class diagram and extracts crucial information to create these conditions. Through rigorous evaluations encompassing diverse UML diagrams and simulated execution scenarios, we have demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach in preventing unintended system behavior caused by the frame problem. We have integrated the approach into the Temporal Property Validator tool, empowering practitioners to leverage its benefits for practical class diagram specification and verification.

How to improve software quality are the important directions in software engineering research field. The complexity has a close relationship with the developing cost, time spending and the number of detects which a program may exist. OOA and OOD have been widely used, so the requirement of measuring software complexity written in object-oriented language is emerging. UML class diagrams describe the static view of a system in terms of classes and relationships among the classes. In order to objectively assess UML class diagrams, this paper presents a suite of metrics based on UML class diagram that is adapted to Java to assess the complexity of UML class diagrams in various aspects, and verifies them with a suite of evaluation rules suggested by Weyuker.

The business process model and notation (BPMN) standard provides notations in the form of diagrams, which are clearly legible for the needs of internal organizations and facilitate collaboration between enterprise components. The problem is how to find a transformation solution between the BPMN and the UML (Unified modeling language) to benefit from the simplicity of the BPMN on the one hand, the stability and the widespread UML on the other hand. We work to have a high-performance solution within the framework of model-driven architecture (MDA) that saves time, cost and quality of the software. This article represents a transformation method that allows us to go through the BPMN business process diagram to arrive at the UML class diagram, finally, to generate the code automatically by using the query views transformations (QVT) transformation language, and this transformation is a fruitful combination between the trades side and the computer side.

The coming of big data era seriously challenges many traditional database techniques and it also explains the popularity of NoSQL databases, Cassandra, for example. Storing data in these NoSQL databases is a prerequisite for applying some popular large-scale data processing frameworks such as Hadoop or Spark. In this paper, we propose a model transformation approach that transforms class diagrams into Cassandra database schemata, which make it possible to obtain larger storage capacity and large-scale data processing ability without painful database schema redesigning. To achieve this goal, meta-models of the source model and target model are built by simplifying the definition of the UML class diagram and studying the Cassandra data model respectively. An annotation system is designed to improve the transformation, i.e., a more appropriate schema for Cassandra and expected runtime performance are achieved by adding extra information about query patterns to the transformation phase. This transformation is implemented with the ATL Transformation Language (ATL).

The purpose of this research is to propose an algorithm for translating class diagram into relational database. At first, class diagram is converter into Java source code. The algorithm analyses it by using the keywords of "class", "attribute", and "relation" and then generates relational database. It shows that this algorithm could reduce error, cost and time of translation. It is still needed for further study in case of many-to-many relationships of class diagram.

The validation and verification of UML class diagrams are essential for ensuring the correctness of complex software systems. However, existing approaches have limitations, such as the inability to automatically deal with the frame problem. The frame problem occurs when operation specifications are incomplete, which can lead to unintended system behavior. This paper proposes an automated approach to specify frame conditions for class diagram verification. Frame conditions are operation contracts that explicitly define the effects an operation may have on the system to mitigate the frame problem. The proposed approach analyzes the behavioral specification of a class diagram to identify relevant information and specify frame conditions. To evaluate the approach, we used the approach to automatically specify frame conditions for different UML diagrams. We then simulated different execution scenarios and analyzed them to evaluate the effectiveness of the specified frame conditions in preventing unintended system behavior resulting from the frame problem. The approach has been implemented and put into practice in the Temporal Property Validator (TPV) tool.

The UML class diagrams generated in reverse engineering are often large and the readability is poor. In this paper, an automatic split algorithm based on multilevel partitioning technology is proposed. According to the coupling degree between classes, the classes with high coupling are divided into the same part and the class with low coupling are separated. Experimental results show that, compared with the traditional manual division, the class diagram obtained by the automatic splitting method is more readable and consumes less time. Using the automatic splitting method to split the large class diagram can save a lot of time, improving work efficiency greatly.
