A study on the platform-pitching vibration of floating offshore wind turbines based on classical control theory

One of the issues of floating offshore wind turbines is the platform-pitching vibration generated by the blade pitch angle motion of the variable speed control. This study investigated the platform-pitching vibration based on the classical control theory using a transfer function between the generator speed and the nacelle pitch angle. This study also investigated the impact of the floating platform vibration control, which can suppress the vibration by adjusting the blade pitch angle according to the nacelle pitch angle, by using a transfer function to which floating platform vibration control is added. The stabilities of these transfer functions were determined using the Nyquist stability criterion, and the impact of the floating platform vibration control parameters was investigated using Bode diagrams.

With the advancement of AI technology, generative AI has made remarkable progress in its ability to process multiple languages and adapt to creative tasks. It has also demonstrated its strength in academic fields, such as passing the national medical examinations. In this study, we tested the extent to which ChatGPT (GPT-4) can accurately answer classical control theory questions offered in undergraduate courses. The experimental results showed that GPT-4 showed a correct response rate of under 70% for quiz exercises in classical control theory, and that the correct response rate was lower for problems whose solutions were specific or required step-by-step thinking. In addition, since GPT-4 is a Transformer-based model, and the answers are based on mere prediction, it may give incorrect answers for problems that require complex calculations. In this study, we proposed a method to improve the response accuracy by developing a customized GPT specialized for classical control theory and using prompt engineering. The proposed method was applied to a university undergraduate final exam in undergraduate course, and the results showed that the correct response rate was improved and a passing score (60% or higher) was obtained.

The design is mainly directed against neural network has a strong nonlinear mapping ability to be effective in the expression of expertise and know-how to the establishment of empirical knowledge of experts from the input space to the output of the nonlinear mapping space. Classic control theory, such as root locus method and frequency response methods, are also called by experience and knowledge of experts. Systematic theoretical analysis on performance of various types of notch filters is presented from a control point of view. It focuses on practical implementation of notch filters in a broad frequency range. The transfer function formulation for diverse types of 2nd order notch filters and double notch filters is conducted for performance analysis. The role of the quality factor Q on the cutoff bandwidth, edge sharpness, system stability and sensitivity is also examined. Bode plots are then introduced to evaluate stability margins of the gain and phase. It provides a theoretical basis to design electrical and optical notch filters.

New theoretical concepts, along with digital computers and inertial sensors, have produced big changes in navigation, guidance, and control in the last 25 years. Optimal flight planning is becoming routine for long distance aircraft routes and for spacecraft and boosters. Kalman-Bucy estimators have become accepted in practice for a great variety of navigation systems. Linear-quadratic (LQ) synthesis of autopilot logic is still not accepted in practice because of problems with robustness to uncertainties and variations in the vehicle model. Identification of vehicle models from flight tests is nearing acceptance in practice but still has a ways to go before it is a trusted tool. Digital control has made possible more accurate and more sophisticated autopilot logic, and promises to be central in most improvements in navigation, guidance, and control in the future.

In the Internet, TCP (Transmission control Protocol) has been used as an end-to-end congestion control mechanism. Of all several TCP implementations, TCP Reno is the most popular implementation. TCP Reno uses a loss-based approach since it estimates the severity of congestion by detecting packet losses in the network. On the contrary, another implementation called TCP Vegas uses a delay-based approach. The main advantage of a delay-based approach is, if it is properly designed, packet losses can be prevented by anticipating, impending congestion from increasing packet delays. However, TCP Vegas was designed using not a theoretical approach but an ad hock one. In this paper, we therefore design a delay-based congestion control mechanism by utilizing the classical control theory. Our rate-based congestion control mechanism dynamically adjusts the packet transmission rate to stabilize the round-trip time for utilizing the network resources and also for preventing packet losses in the network. Presenting several simulation results in two network configurations, we quantitatively show the robustness and the effectiveness of our delay-based congestion control mechanism.

Forward and backward processes for INS compass alignment

Initial alignment is a crucial procedure for inertial navigation systems (INS). Both the alignment speed and alignment accuracy are important for INS;however, these two goals are difficult to achieve by using general methods at the same time. In order to resolve this contradictory issue, the forward and backward processes based method for INS alignment can be used. A new data processing method called forward and backward processes has been applied in INS alignment, based on that, a further research of forward and backward processes for compass alignment is done in this paper. The main contribution of this paper is to study whether the contradictory issue could be properly solved by using the forward and backward compass processes under the conditions of existing both the internal constant inertial sensor errors and external oscillatory errors caused by vehicle motions. Since the compass alignment is established based on classical control theory, the analysis of forward and backward compass processes is carried out using the error equations in frequency domain. The analysis and simulation results indicate that forward and backward processes for compass alignment can well solve the contradiction problem between alignment speed and accuracy only in the case of existing constant inertial sensor errors, namely the method is not applicable for existence of oscillatory errors. Analysis of the X-15 Flight 3-65-97 Divergent Limit-Cycle Oscillation

A brief history of the X-15-3 adaptive control system and an analysis of the destructive limit-cycle oscillation that occurred during its final November 1967 flight are presented. The X-15 was a piloted single-seat rocket-propelled hypersonic research aircraft operated by the NASA Flight Research Center from 1959 until 1968. Due to the limited information previously available in the public domain and the 1968 decision by the accident investigation board to forego detailed analysis of the adaptive control system's role in the accident, it was widely assumed in the adaptive controls community that an anomalous behavior of the adaptive component caused the loss of control. Notwithstanding the complex human factors and subsystem failures that contributed to the accident, it is shown that the adaptation dynamics were not a causal factor. The limit cycle observed in the flight data is reproduced in a nonlinear time-domain simulation. Describing function analysis reveals that the instability was caused by a latent design error in the inner-loop structural filters that did not account for the nonlinear behavior of the X-15 servoactuator under rate saturation when coupled with the lightly damped aircraft longitudinal mode at high Mach numbers.

DESIGN OF A PAYLOAD POINTING control-SYSTEM FOR TRACKING MOVING-OBJECTS

A payload pointing control system for tracking an arbitrarily moving object is presented. The angular position, rate, and acceleration commands are developed in order for a two-degree-of-freedom telescope to track the object. The bandwidth of the control system is determined on the basis of the Fourier spectra of the rate commands and rate error specifications. The pointing control system operates in three modes: a linear rate mode for tracking, a linear position mode for settling, and a nonlinear position mode for coasting. The analysis is illustrated for a landmark observation with a near-Earth spacecraft. The settling times and steady-state errors based on single-axis and dominant pole approximations are compared with those from an extensive nonlinear digital simulation.

The influences of the operating characteristics of an Electronic Expansion Valve (EEV) on the operational stability of an EEV controlled direct expansion air conditioning system

This paper reports on a study on the influences of the operating characteristics of a proportional integral (PI) controlled Electronic Expansion Valve (EEV) on the operational stability of a direct expansion (DX) air conditioning (A/C) system. Using the classical control theory, EEV's PI settings and time constant of EEV's temperature sensor were analyzed. The theoretical analysis results using the classical control theory were further verified experimentally using an experimental DX A/C system. The study results showed that a larger proportional or integral gain would lead to a high chance for the EEV evaporator control loop to become unstable, while slowing down the rate of degree of superheat (DS) signal transfer by increasing EEV's time constants may help mitigate system's operational instability. The results confirmed that the operating characteristics of an expansion valve in a refrigeration system could impact its operational stability. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd and IIR. All rights reserved.
