Operation of a unidirectional Vienna rectifier is described in the paper using basic electrical circuit laws only without referring to the space vector theory, typically employed in the literature. An average model is derived for a general unbalanced load and classical control theory is employed to construct the control laws for a three-loop control structure. Simulation results are given to validate the presented approach.

The Newton-Euler method was used to derive the dynamic equation of the linear inverted pendulum, and obtained the mathematical model of the linear inverted pendulum after linearization. Based on this model, a double closed-loop control scheme was proposed. The inner loop regulated the angle of pendulum by using root locus control, while the outer loop controlled the position of the car by using fuzzy logic control method. With the help of the control scheme, it was easier realize the control of the pendulum angle and cart position synchronously, in addition, reduced difficulty of the controller design. Finally, in the programming environment of Matlab, the computer simulation and real-time control was finished, and the controlled system had good performance. The results of simulation and real-time control showed the correctness of modelling and the validity of control scheme.

We consider the problem of designing control laws for a marine cooling system used for cooling the main engine and auxiliary components aboard several classes of container vessels. We focus on achieving simple set point control for the system and do not consider compensation of the non-linearities, closed circuit flow dynamics or transport delays that are present in the system. control laws are therefore designed using classical control theory and the performance of the design is illustrated through a simulation example where it is compared to a reference control design.

This paper proposes an overall design scheme of Line-of-sight (LOS) tracking control for the integrated satellite system with vibration isolation platform (VIP) and control moment gyroscopes (CMGs). First, the three-axis attitude and motion trajectory are established for tracking the on-orbit dynamic target. To improve the accuracy and stability of target tracking, the VIP is applied to isolate CMGs micro vibration, and then controller parameters of integrated satellite system are synthetically designed based on the classical control theory. Subsequently, the effectiveness of the control scheme is verified by frequency and time domain simulation. The numerical examples show that the tracking accuracy can be increased by 80% and the stability can be improved by two orders of magnitude after adding VIP in the presence of the sample time of controller and the rotor static and dynamic imbalance.

The air transportation system is a complex agglomeration of physical-world, cyber-, and human assets. The management of threats to this infrastructure requires complex strategies that account for and leverage these various assets: this has traditionally been done manually by the various stakeholders involved in system operations, but manual resolution of threats is becoming increasingly challenging. The purpose of this presentation is to explore the development of automation to manage threats to the air transportation system. We bring forth the perspective that threat management requires a new type of slow autonomy - which is not concerned with extreme speed or precision, but rather flexible management of highly sophisticated systems with extreme uncertainty and ill-defined goals.

This paper focuses on the challenges associated with the existing dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) techniques for the modal analysis of spatiotemporal data, such as spectral pollution, noisy measurements, missing data, and multi-fidelity datasets. A methodology based on Multi-fidelity multi-variate Gaussian process regression (M(2)GPR) is employed to address these challenges. The M(2)GPR method leverages the connection between Gaussian processes and the spectral representations of linear systems, and further extends to the analysis of nonlinear systems via the Koopman formalism. The capability of M(2)GPR is endowed by its judiciously designed kernel structure for correlation function, that emulates the linear dynamics in the state space or in the Koopman space;furthermore, the learning of correlation function does not require uniform sampling of time steps and thus can handle sparse datasets with relative ease. The single-fidelity portion of M(2)GPR method is demonstrated on a range of examples, with benchmarks against the DMD method. It manifests itself as a promising alternative to conventional modal analysis methods, esp. in the limit of sparse and noisy datasets. In the case of noisy measurement, DMD always includes noise in every identified mode, whereas M(2)GPR captures a clear image for each mode. Additionally, M(2)GPR outperforms DMD in learning the frequencies and modes from sparse dataset, requiring as little as 20% of the dataset. Lastly, some potential extensions of the M(2)GPR method for modal analysis are discussed.

Stationkeeping Analysis for Solar Sailing the L4 Region of Binary Asteroid Systems

Asteroid exploration may largely benefit from solar-sail propulsion that is coupled with satellite miniaturization. There remain, however, several open questions on sail dynamics in the vicinity of small bodies. One such question is the feasibility of solar-sail missions within binary asteroid systems from the perspective of orbit maintenance. Although sail transfer trajectories to small bodies are often discussed, more work is necessary to understand sail stationkeeping dynamics in such environments. This work focuses on solar-sail stationkeeping in the L4 region of binary asteroids within a modified elliptic restricted three-body problem. Quasi-periodic orbits and Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser theory are employed to construct reference solutions that are naturally bounded and therefore facilitate orbit maintenance. Reference quasi-periodic behaviors may reflect the characteristics of motion within higher-fidelity models more accurately than purely periodic or equilibrium baseline solutions. Then, a turn-and-hold stationkeeping strategy is implemented to offset orbit determination errors, and stationkeeping parameters are investigated. Using the Didymos binary asteroid system as a representative case study, dynamical reference structures for sail trajectories are explored. Additionally, conditions for their controllability are also discussed. Insight from this analysis is applicable to other binary asteroid systems.

Partial Observability Analysis of an Adversarial Swarm Model

This paper introduces a new concept of partial observability for nonlinear systems. This new approach enables a quantitative analysis on the observability of an individual state variable and unknown parameters of a nonlinear dynamics even when the system is not observable in the traditional sense. The paper develops theoretical properties of partial observability and its computational algorithms. These results are applied and validated on a nonstandard estimation problem of detecting the internal cooperating strategy of a particular adversarial swarm model. Partial observability analysis on the parameters that define the cooperating strategy reveals interesting findings. For example, some parameters are observable even when the swarm is at a steady state that is not observable in traditional sense. It is also shown that observability of the internal cooperating strategy depends on both the swarm trajectory and the time window of the measurement. Motivated by these findings, a variational method of estimation based on the dynamic optimization of a cost function is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed estimation method outperforms Kalman filters. The results in this paper provide useful tools for applications involving adversarial swarms, including defense against swarm attacks and herding of biological swarms.
