An End-to-End Framework for the classification of Hyperspectral Images in the Wood Domain

Hyperspectral images consist of a multitude of spectral bands for each pixel. Spectral bands provide information about wavelengths that may cover a larger spectrum of what the human eye may see. In the hyperspectral domain, the classification of hyperspectral images is usually addressed by taking into account only the spectral information. However, in the wood domain, spatial information is also relevant. To bridge this gap, this paper proposes a CNN-based end-to-end framework for the classification of hyperspectral images in the wood domain. The proposed framework consists of a spatial and spectral classifier that are integrated to make the final prediction. Each classifier is built by adapting a general image classifier, which is suitable for the classification of three-band images, to handle hyperspectral images. The framework is trained and validated on a real dataset, provided by a company working in the wood domain to detect wood fungi. The results obtained have shown that the proposed framework is a lightweight and effective approach for the recognition of wood fungi categories. The framework outperforms a benchmark classifier by 17% and can generate a classification map of hyperspectral images of wood boards of any size with an accuracy of 96%.

Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer comprises esophageal, gastric, colon and rectal tumors. The diagnosis of GI cancer often relies on medical imaging modalities namely magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), histopathological slides, endoscopy, and computed tomography (CT) scans. This provides particular details about the size, location, and characteristics of tumors. The high death rate for GI cancer patients shows that it is possible to increase analysis for a more personalized therapy strategy which leads to improved prognosis and few side effects although many extrapolative and predictive biomarkers exist. Gastrointestinal cancer classification is a challenging but vital area of research and application within medical imaging and machine learning. Artificial intelligence (AI) based diagnostic support system, especially convolution neural network (CNN) based image examination tool, has enormous potential in medical computer vision. The study presents a GI Cancer Detection and classification utilizing the African Vulture Optimization Algorithm with Transfer Learning (GICDC-AVOADL) methodology. The major aim of the GICDC-AVOADL model is to examine GI images for the identification of cancer. To achieve this, the GICDC-AVOADL method makes use of an improved EfficientNet-B5 method to learn features from input images. Furthermore, AVOA is exploited for optimum hyperparameter selection of the improved EfficientNet-B5 method. The GICDC-AVOADL technique applies dilated convolutional autoencoder (DCAE) For GI cancer detection and classification. A complete set of simulations was conducted to examine the enhanced GI cancer detection performance of the GICDC-AVOADL technique. The extensive results inferred superior performance of the GICDC-AVOADL algorithm over current models.

Deep Fuzzy Envelope Sample Generation Mechanism for Imbalanced Ensemble classification

Ensemble methods are widely used to tackle class imbalance problem. However, for existing imbalanced ensemble (IE) methods, the samples in each subset are resampled from the same dataset, and are directly input to the classifier for training, so the quality (diversity and separability) of the subsets is unsatisfactory usually. To solve the problem, a deep fuzzy envelope sample generation mechanism is proposed. First, the fuzzy C-means clustering based deep sample envelope prenetwork (DSEN) is designed to mine correlation information among samples, thereby increasing the quality of the subsets. Second, the local manifold structure metric and global structure distribution metric are designed to construct local-global structure consistency mechanism (LGSCM) to enhance distribution consistency of interlayer samples of DSEN. Third, the DSEN and LGSCM are combined to form the final deep sample envelope network-DSENLG to refresh the existing subsets. Finally, base classifiers are applied on the new subsets generated by the DSENLG and then fused, thereby realizing a new IE algorithm. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is significantly better than existing representative IE algorithms and it achieves the highest improvement of 10.64%, 19.5%, 18.67% and 22.33% on four criteria over the state-of-the-art methods. The originality of the article is threefold: proposing the concept of "deep fuzzy samples" or "envelope samples", which comprehensively considers the correlation information among original samples;proposing the LGSCM to resolve the distribution inconsistency of interlayer samples;and forming an fuzzy envelope sample based IE algorithm.

Relative Entropy and PageRank-Based Classifier Chains for Multi-Label classification

The Classifier Chains (CC) method is an effective method for multi-label classification, with its performance significantly contingent on the label order. However, most existing algorithms focus on determining the label order by considering label correlations as symmetric, ignoring that label correlations prevail asymmetric in real-world applications. To overcome the problem, we propose a novel Relative Entropy and PageRank-based Classifier Chains for multi-label classification (REPCC). Firstly, to completely capture label correlation, REPCC exploits relative entropy to estimate the asymmetric correlation between pairs of labels, filter out those pairs of labels with lower correlation, and construct a label correlation matrix. Secondly, by treating each label as a node, a directed graph is generated based on the filtered label correlation matrix. Finally, drawing an analogy between labels and web pages, the idea of PageRank, commonly used to measure the importance of web pages, is employed to rank labels in the directed graph and establish a classifier chain. Experimental results on ten public datasets from various domains show that REPCC outperforms state-of-the-art methods in CC.

Domain Adaptation of Time Series classification

In the era of big data and the rapid development of sensor technology, the time series classification problem has become an important research direction in the field of data mining. The complexity and diversity of time series data itself may lead to the inconsistency of the distribution between the training set and the test set, and this distribution difference may cause significant fluctuations in the model performance in practical applications. In contrast, domain adaptation models aim to adapt to test data with different distributions from the training data to improve the model performance. To address this challenge, we propose the Au-RAINCOAT model based on the RAINCOAT model, which is a closed-set domain adaptation model for complex time series. The model first considers the introduction of an Auto-Correlation mechanism module, which aims to compensate for the shortcomings of the Fourier transform by capturing local information while improving the computational efficiency. Second, to avoid the stability problems associated with the choice of regularization parameters in Sinkhorn divergence, we choose to use the Proxy-A-Distance(PAD).In this paper, we use four common datasets such as WISDM, HAR, HHAR, Sleep-EDF, and experiments are conducted on seven models. The experimental results show that the method has better results on the four datasets.

Real-Time classification of Vehicles Using Machine Learning Algorithm on the Extensive Dataset

Vehicle classification (VC) is a prominent research domain within image processing and machine learning (ML) for identifying vehicle volumes and traffic rule violations. In developed countries, nearly 40% of daily accidents are fatal, while in developing countries, the figure rises to 70%. Traditionally, vehicle detection and classification have been performed manually by experts, which is difficult, time-consuming, and prone to errors. Furthermore, incorrect detection and classification can result in hazardous situations. This highlights the need for more reliable techniques to identify and classify vehicles accurately and practically. In existing applications, numerous automated methods have been proposed. However, employing deep and machine learning algorithms on complex datasets of vehicle images has failed to achieve accuracy in various climate conditions and has been time-consuming. This paper presents an accurate, robust, real-time system to classify vehicles from onsite roads. The proposed system utilizes a random wavelet transform for pre-processing, edge and region-based segmentation for feature extraction, an embedded method for feature selection, and the XGBoost algorithm for VC. The proposed work classifies vehicles under complex weather, illumination, color, and occlusion conditions over 10 datasets, including a novel dataset named SRM2KTR, containing 75,436 vehicle images on an FPGA platform. The results show 98.81% accuracy, outperforming the state-of-the-art (98%). The system was demonstrated with four different classifiers, classifying images in 0.16 ns with an average accuracy of 97.79%. The system exhibits high accuracy, rapid identification time, and robustness in practical use.

Morphological differentiation between myeloblasts and monoblasts is pivotal for the majority of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) diagnosis in clinical settings. Manual morphology-based classification of blasts encounters challenges due to the limited differentiation of these bone marrow cells (BMC) of early stages. Hence, the utilization of artificial intelligence is essential to assist in the classification of these cells. 4001 single-cell images of monoblasts and myeloblasts were collected from Taizhou Hospital to form the BMC-1 dataset. The main novelties and features of the proposed method are as follows: 1) A maximum connected domain extraction method grounded in the watershed algorithm is introduced to efficiently eliminate stained impurity cells from single cell images. 2) A dynamic focal loss is introduced to gradually focus on difficult-to-classify samples as the training progresses. 3) A dual-channel convolutional block attention network (DCCBANet) is introduced to enhance feature extraction. It employs attention mechanisms to focus on key features, utilizing ordinary convolution for local feature extraction, dilated convolution for global feature extraction, and a decreasing dilation rate sequence to preserve detailed information. A macro F1-score (macro_F) of 96.8% is achieved on the BMC-1 validation dataset. Additionally, the presence of multiple differentiation types of granulocytes pose difficulties in granulocytes distinction. To further validate the efficacy of our proposed method on multi-classification tasks, we collected 6626 granulocyte single-cell images from Taizhou Hospital. Augmenting the dataset with 2441 granulocyte single-cell images from the public dataset BM_cytomorphology addressed sample shortages, forming the BMC-2 dataset. We applied our model to the BMC-2 dataset for experiments and ultimately achieved a macro_F of 87.49%. BoostXML: Gradient Boosting for Extreme Multilabel Text classification With Tail Labels

Multilabel learning involving hundreds of thousands or even millions of labels is referred to as extreme multilabel learning (XML), in which the labels often follow a power-law distribution with the majority occurring in very few data points as tail labels. Recent years have witnessed the intensive use of deep-learning methods for high-performance XML, but they are typically optimized for the head labels with abundant training instances and less consider the performance on tail labels, which, however, like the needles in haystacks, are often the focus of attention in real-life applications. In light of this, we present BoostXML, a deep learning-based XML method for extreme multilabel text classification, enhanced greatly by gradient boosting. In BoostXML, we pay more attention to tail labels in each Boosting Step by optimizing the residual mostly from unfitted training instances with tail labels. A Corrective Step is further proposed to avoid the mismatching between the text encoder and weak learners during optimization, which reduces the risk of falling into local optima and improves model performance. A Pretraining Step is also introduced in the initial stage of BoostXML to avoid exorbitant bias to tail labels. Extensive experiments on five benchmark datasets with state-of-the-art baselines demonstrate the advantage of BoostXML in tail-label prediction.

High Speed Single Pixel Imaging Measurement Value classification Through Multi-Layer Perceptron

The slow reconstruction process of single-pixel imaging makes it difficult to apply to dynamic scenes, and it also causes serious computational waste for the reconstruction of objectless data. To address this, we propose a method of using multi-layer perceptron to achieve high-speed screening and object detection of single pixel imaging data. This method achieves a detection rate of 2500 frames per second (fps) and an accuracy of 94.98% on the MNIST dataset. The classification accuracy of our proposed method is 87.8% at 0.77% sampling rate and in real scene tests, and it maintains good performance under 10% random noise.

In several industrial applications, visual inspection impacts production and quality of products. In case of surface defect on metal structures, a decision should be made to discard the defective piece and prevent from possible failure in further steps of an industrial process. Accordingly, the decision-making should be automated using advanced image processing methods which must take into consideration the various surface defect types. Nevertheless, they can sometimes look similar causing a high level of ambiguity, even from the point of view of an expert. Possibility theory can offer a formalism and allows coping with such ambiguity, yielding more reliable decisions. Moreover, possibility transform based on probability intervals can tackle the problem of lack of information or sampling problem, and can describe in a more realistic way the features within a specific confidence region level based on Goodman concept. Then, a further transformation of interval probability to possibility using Masson et Denoeux formalism, allows a possibility mapping of the different classes at a given confidence level. In this paper, we propose a new formalism based on possibility transform, handling probability intervals, for addressing ambiguity and uncertainty affecting steel surface defects. The effectiveness of the proposed method is largely confirmed by carrying out comparative studies with other methods similar to deep learning or conventional methods. Accordingly, two validation databases NEU-DET and GC10-DET are deployed, demonstrating that the the possibility approach allows an improvement in the classification of surface defects by achieving accuracy rates sometimes approaching 100%, outperforming for the majority of the considered defect types, existing approaches.
