This paper proposes the concept of "networked JIT control" based on a client-server architecture via the Internet, which is an expanded version of the Just-In-Time (JIT) control. In the proposed concept, the server has a database for the JIT control and the client has a plant to be controlled. The server performs the computation of an inverse model of the plant by utilizing data stored in the database. The client executes a feedback control algorithm, communicates data for the JIT control with the server through the Internet, and feeds control commands to the plant In addition to the general advantages of the JIT control, this concept enables to share the database on the server with the clients and to reduce the costs of the addition of more clients. A control system of a robot manipulator driven by pneumatic artificial muscles, which are elastic and safe for humans but nonlinear and difficult to model, is constructed based on the proposed concept Experimental results show that data obtained by communicating with the server lead to an improvement in the control performance and that the proposed concept is realizable.

This paper presents a novel approach for object recognition in extended image databases using a mobile clientserver architecture. The proposed approach relies upon feature detection and description to characterize textured objects within the image. The similarity search is performed on descriptor arrays by computing the distance between the query descriptor compared with reference descriptors extracted offline. The key contributions of the approach are the high accuracy, the time-effectiveness and the scalability of the method towards large image datasets. The developed method is first, integrated on a mobile platform and, then, deployed on a clientserver architecture to deal with high volume image galleries. Experiments are performed to evaluate the performances of the system in real-life environment conditions and the obtained results demonstrate the relevance of the proposed approach.

The detection and recognition of Traffic Signs (TSs) by smart vehicles is of great interest. In this paper, we present a novel TSs localisation and recognition system using client-server architecture. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first architecture that uses non vision-based techniques to detect and recognise TSs. To discover TSs in lanes using our architecture, each travelling vehicle (known as client in our architecture) begins by sending a request, which contains its geographical position, to the data server. This server then sends all nearby TSs, found within a given radius in the lane, to the requester. Finally, we apply a filtering algorithm to select appropriate TSs from the previously found set of TSs. Our system can be used in a conjunction with a traditional vision-based system to further increase the accuracy of the whole system.

The database of the TJ-II flexible heliac is centralized in a Unix server. This computer also commands the on-line processes related to data acquisition during TJ-II discharges: programming of measurement systems, connectivity with control systems, data visualization, and computations. The server has to provide access to the data so that signal analysis can be performed by local users or even from remote hosts. Data retrieving is accomplished by means of a client/server architecture in which two data servers are permanently running in the background of the Unix computer. One of them serves data requests from local clients and the other one sends data to remote clients. The communication protocol in both cases has been developed by using TCP/IP and Berkeley sockets. The client part consists of a set of routines (FORTRAN and C callable), which, in a transparent way, provide connectivity with the servers. This structure allows access to TJ-II data exactly in the same way from any computer, hiding not only specific aspects of the database, but hardware architecture of the server computer as well. In addition, the remote access makes it possible to distribute computations and to reduce the load on the Unix server from analysis and visualization tasks. At present, this software is running in four different environments: the Unix server itself, various types of Unix workstations, a CRAY J90 and a CRAY T3E. Finally, due to the fact that visualization is essential for TJ-II data analysis, a powerful and a very flexible visualization tool has been developed. It is a point and click application based on X Window/Motif. Data access is carried out through the client/server processes mentioned above and the software runs in the client computer. In this paper we describe a client-server architecture for haptic interaction with simulated deformable objects. The computationally expensive object deformation is computed on the server at a low temporal update rate and transmitted to the clients. There, an intermediate representation of the deformable object is used to locally render haptic force feedback displayed to the user at the required rate of 1 kHz. Based on a one-dimensional deformable object, we analyze the transparency of this multi-rate architecture for a single client interaction. The delay introduced by the deformation simulation and the client-server communication leads to increased rendered forces at the clients compared to a reference scenario without delay. We propose a method that adaptively adjusts the stiffness used in the local force rendering at the client to compensate for this. The evaluation shows that the proposed method successfully compensates the effect of delay in the tested delay range of up to 100 ms.

The amount of available on-line information has been expanding rapidly due to the growth of internet. Communication may increase the networks traffic, waste network bandwidth and causes delays. To efficiently find, gather and retrieve information is a major concern. The solution to this problem is use of Mobile Agents (MA's) technology. A mobile agent is a program (encapsulating code, data, and state) sent by a client to a server machine in order to satisfy requests made by their clients. If the machine does not contain the needed resource, MA is transferred to a new machine containing the necessary resource, and the MA resumes execution at the new machine. Once the mobile agent has migrated, the connection between client and server will be disconnected. This saves network bandwidth, especially in a wireless environment. In this paper the attempt has been made to design and implement the mobile agents for providing fast and secure services to the user in the client-server environment. These agents can be used in the military network for accessing the information in secure way. The results are obtained is better than previous system.

Most current e-auction systems are based on the client-server architecture. Such centralized systems provide a single point of failure and control. In contrast, peer-to-peer systems permit distributed control and minimize individual node and link failures' impact on the system. The shared-storage-based auction model described decentralizes services among peers to share the required processing load and aggregates peers' resources for common use. The model is based on the principles of local computation at each peer, direct inter-peer communication, and a shared storage space.

Modeler-independent feature recognition in a distributed environment

Solid modelers and other CAD/CAM subsystems are moving to distributed heterogeneous computing environments, so as to support design and manufacturing processes that are temporally and spatially distributed. Communication and collaboration among the software components of such distributed systems require protocols for accessing remote objects. This paper discusses an approach that provides transparent access to diverse solid modelers in a distributed environment. A solid modeler is augmented with a software wrapper, called an adaptor, so as to provide a uniform application programming interface (API). Applications interact with the uniform API and need not concern themselves with the specifics of the modeling systems used. API calls are implemented in a client-server architecture, in which a modeler and its adaptor function as a geometry server, and various applications communicate with the server through remote procedure calls (RPCs). A few adaptors have been implemented at the University of Southern California's Programmable Automation Laboratory, and have been used routinely for several years. This paper discusses adaptor design problems and our approach to their solutions. It illustrates the application of our methods through an example that involves the incremental recognition of machinable features in a distributed environment. This environment includes a geometry server, a simple feature-based design system, a state-of-the-art feature recognizer, and a graphics renderer, all running as separate processes in different machines. To our knowledge, this is the first documented effort in which a complex application such as feature recognition is capable of running, unmodified, on top of modelers based on constructive solid geometry or on boundary representations, which are fundamentally different. Principles of Robust Timing over the Internet

The article discusses how computer networks can be used to synchronize computer clocks. The authors discuss how personal computers (PCs) can access Network Time Protocol (NTP) servers to correct deviations in their internal clocks through the transfer of packet timestamps but suggest that NTP systems may not be accurate enough for computing in industries such as telecommunications and finance. They discuss how oscillators in PCs provide a source of time that can drift and note that synchronization algorithms must account for delay variations from timing packets due to elements such as network interface card (NIC) operations, the queuing of Internet Protocol (IP) routers and network congestion. Feedback and feed-forward methods for absolute clock synchronization are described.
