The detection and recognition of Traffic Signs (TSs) by smart vehicles is of great interest. In this paper, we present a novel TSs localisation and recognition system using client-server architecture. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first architecture that uses non vision-based techniques to detect and recognise TSs. To discover TSs in lanes using our architecture, each travelling vehicle (known as client in our architecture) begins by sending a request, which contains its geographical position, to the data server. This server then sends all nearby TSs, found within a given radius in the lane, to the requester. Finally, we apply a filtering algorithm to select appropriate TSs from the previously found set of TSs. Our system can be used in a conjunction with a traditional vision-based system to further increase the accuracy of the whole system.

This paper presents a novel approach for object recognition in extended image databases using a mobile clientserver architecture. The proposed approach relies upon feature detection and description to characterize textured objects within the image. The similarity search is performed on descriptor arrays by computing the distance between the query descriptor compared with reference descriptors extracted offline. The key contributions of the approach are the high accuracy, the time-effectiveness and the scalability of the method towards large image datasets. The developed method is first, integrated on a mobile platform and, then, deployed on a clientserver architecture to deal with high volume image galleries. Experiments are performed to evaluate the performances of the system in real-life environment conditions and the obtained results demonstrate the relevance of the proposed approach.

Decoupled Edge Physics Algorithms for Collaborative XR Simulations

This work proposes a novel approach to transform any modern game engine pipeline, for optimized performance and enhanced user experiences in extended reality (XR) environments decoupling the physics engine from the game engine pipeline and using a client-server N-1$$ N-1 $$ architecture creates a scalable solution, efficiently serving multiple graphics clients on head-mounted displays (HMDs) with a single physics engine on edge-cloud infrastructure. This approach ensures better synchronization in multiplayer scenarios without introducing overhead in single-player experiences, maintaining session continuity despite changes in user participation. Relocating the Physics Engine to an edge or cloud node reduces strain on local hardware, dedicating more resources to high-quality rendering and unlocking the full potential of untethered HMDs. We present four algorithms that decouple the physics engine, increasing frame rates and Quality of Experience (QoE) in VR simulations, supporting advanced interactions, numerous physics objects, and multiuser sessions with over 100 concurrent users. Incorporating a Geometric Algebra interpolator reduces inter-calls between dissected parts, maintaining QoE and easing network stress. Experimental validation, with more than 100 concurrent users, 10,000 physics objects, and softbody simulations, confirms the technical viability of the proposed architecture, showcasing transformative capabilities for more immersive and collaborative XR applications without compromising performance.

Runtime Detection Framework for Android Malware

As the number of Android malware has been increased rapidly over the years, various malware detection methods have been proposed so far. Existing methods can be classified into two categories: static analysis-based methods and dynamic analysis-based methods. Both approaches have some limitations: static analysis-based methods are relatively easy to be avoided through transformation techniques such as junk instruction insertions, code reordering, and so on. However, dynamic analysis-based methods also have some limitations that analysis overheads are relatively high and kernel modification might be required to extract dynamic features. In this paper, we propose a dynamic analysis framework for Android malware detection that overcomes the aforementioned shortcomings. The framework uses a suffix tree that contains API (Application Programming Interface) subtraces and their probabilistic confidence values that are generated using HMMs (Hidden Markov Model) to reduce the malware detection overhead, and we designed the framework with the client-server architecture since the suffix tree is infeasible to be deployed in mobile devices. In addition, an application rewriting technique is used to trace API invocations without any modifications in the Android kernel. In our experiments, we measured the detection accuracy and the computational overheads to evaluate its effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed framework.

This paper proposes the concept of "networked JIT control" based on a client-server architecture via the Internet, which is an expanded version of the Just-In-Time (JIT) control. In the proposed concept, the server has a database for the JIT control and the client has a plant to be controlled. The server performs the computation of an inverse model of the plant by utilizing data stored in the database. The client executes a feedback control algorithm, communicates data for the JIT control with the server through the Internet, and feeds control commands to the plant In addition to the general advantages of the JIT control, this concept enables to share the database on the server with the clients and to reduce the costs of the addition of more clients. A control system of a robot manipulator driven by pneumatic artificial muscles, which are elastic and safe for humans but nonlinear and difficult to model, is constructed based on the proposed concept Experimental results show that data obtained by communicating with the server lead to an improvement in the control performance and that the proposed concept is realizable.

In this paper we describe a client-server architecture for haptic interaction with simulated deformable objects. The computationally expensive object deformation is computed on the server at a low temporal update rate and transmitted to the clients. There, an intermediate representation of the deformable object is used to locally render haptic force feedback displayed to the user at the required rate of 1 kHz. Based on a one-dimensional deformable object, we analyze the transparency of this multi-rate architecture for a single client interaction. The delay introduced by the deformation simulation and the client-server communication leads to increased rendered forces at the clients compared to a reference scenario without delay. We propose a method that adaptively adjusts the stiffness used in the local force rendering at the client to compensate for this. The evaluation shows that the proposed method successfully compensates the effect of delay in the tested delay range of up to 100 ms.

The paper deals with a development of a Mobile Vote Application (MVA), for platform called Dalvik - virtual machine which runs on mobile operating system Android integrated in many end-devices The focus of the application is to extend the functionality of the mobile device which can be used instead of voting systems' remote parts. The main goal of the application based on client-server architecture is to eliminate the overhead related with the remote components handling. The application was successfully tested and is able to use not only for educational purposes.
