Runtime Detection Framework for Android Malware

As the number of Android malware has been increased rapidly over the years, various malware detection methods have been proposed so far. Existing methods can be classified into two categories: static analysis-based methods and dynamic analysis-based methods. Both approaches have some limitations: static analysis-based methods are relatively easy to be avoided through transformation techniques such as junk instruction insertions, code reordering, and so on. However, dynamic analysis-based methods also have some limitations that analysis overheads are relatively high and kernel modification might be required to extract dynamic features. In this paper, we propose a dynamic analysis framework for Android malware detection that overcomes the aforementioned shortcomings. The framework uses a suffix tree that contains API (Application Programming Interface) subtraces and their probabilistic confidence values that are generated using HMMs (Hidden Markov Model) to reduce the malware detection overhead, and we designed the framework with the client-server architecture since the suffix tree is infeasible to be deployed in mobile devices. In addition, an application rewriting technique is used to trace API invocations without any modifications in the Android kernel. In our experiments, we measured the detection accuracy and the computational overheads to evaluate its effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed framework.

To provide reliable connection management, a transport protocol uses 3-way handshakes in which user incarnations are identified by bounded incarnation numbers from some modulo-N space, Cacheing schemes have been proposed to reduce the 3-way handshake to a 2-way handshake, providing the minimum latency desired for transaction-oriented applications. In:this paper, we define a class of cacheing protocols and determine the minimum N and optimal cache residency time as a function of real-time constraints (e.g., message lifetime, incarnation creation rate, inactivity duration, etc.), The protocols use the client-server architecture and handle failures and recoveries, Both clients and servers generate incarnation numbers from a local counter (e.g., clock), These protocols assume a maximum duration for each incarnation;without this assumption, there is a very small probability (approximate to 1/N-2) of misinterpretation of incarnation numbers, This restriction can be overcome with some additional cacheing.

Enhancing privacy in collaborative traffic-monitoring systems using autonomous location update

Collaborative traffic-monitoring (CTM) systems exploit the location information continuously collected from vehicles. Location data are very sensitive information that made privacy a major obstacle for the widespread usage of CTM systems. The way how this data are generated and used is very important for users' privacy and data quality as well. Recently, two CTM approaches have been proposed, the first relies on a dedicated infrastructure that is called vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), and the second utilises the existing underlying infrastructure such as cellular and wireless networks. In this study, the authors propose a privacy aware collaborative traffic monitoring system (PA-CTM) that considers the privacy and security properties of VANETs and existing infrastructures. PA-CTM provides a client server architecture that relies on existing infrastructures and enhances privacy by: (i) Using a robust pseudonym providing system for anonymous access. Pseudonyms enable users to be authenticated anonymously by the traffic server without having their identities revealed. It also allows revealing identities for law enforcement purposes when necessary. Users are able to change their pseudonyms and hence hide their complete trajectory information form traffic server. (ii) Utilising a novel autonomous location update mechanism (ALUM) that does not rely on a trusted third party and uses only local parameters (speed and direction) for triggering a location update or pseudonym change. These performance results showed that ALUM is effective for traffic monitoring in terms of both privacy and utility.

Progress under bounded fairness

Progress is investigated for a shared-memory distributed system with a weak form of fault tolerance that allows processes to stop and restart functioning without notification. The concept of bounded fairness is introduced to formalize bounded delay under the assumption that each family of related processes continuously contains at least one active member. This is a generalization of wait-freedom, and also of a finitary form of weak fairness. Several useful proof rules are stated and proved. In a system with bounded fairness, a wait-free process can be constructed by forming a new process in which processes from the various families are scheduled in a round robin way. The theory is applied to prove progress within bounded delay for a linearizing concurrent data-object in shared memory. The safety properties of this algorithm have been treated elsewhere.

ActiveCOM:: an inter-working framework for Corba and DCOM based on a generic protocol

The constant rising of networks and the decrease of computer system costs have enforced rite development of distributed platforms. Microsoft DCOM (distributed component object model) and OMG (object management group) Cor-ba (common object request broker architecture) are two major solutions to develop distributed applications. However heterogeneity of these platforms is a fundamental problem which pc-events applications to inter-work because they depend on their platform support. Then, each of them introduces its own functionality from several perspectives: they define distinct IDLS (interface definition language), distinct system mechanisms (Sor instance, object binding is based either on object references or on interface binding handles) and distinct communication protocols: ORPC (object remote procedure call for DCOM and IIOP (Internet inter-ORB protocol) for Corba, While the commonly used approaches ale based on bridges or on parsers, we propose, in this paper an alternative approach to enable inter-working between Corba and DCOM applications. Actually, we present a model called "activeCOM" which provides native interworking between Corba and DCOM. In particular;an original solution - called GRIP for generic remote invocation protocol - obtained by combination of IIOP and ORPC internal protocol behaviours is described. The GRIP protocol inherits both the robustness of ORPC and the simplicity of IIOP. It also preserves compatibility with those solutions and enables interoperability without the use of bridges.

The requirements on an object-oriented DBMS for management of information in a large, complex enterprise are presented. These requirements aid in the achievement of an environment characterized by data sharing, open architectures, application and data portability, and assurance of data integrity. They were defined from the point of view of a user of the DBMS;therefore they describe the expected functionality of the DBMS and do not specify the method of implementation to achieve this functionality. They encompass requirements on the data model, query and data manipulation languages, the system architecture, interfaces to the system, change management, and transaction management.

IMAGE REFERENCE DATABASE IN TELERADIOLOGY - MIGRATING TO WWW

The paper presents a multimedia Image Reference Data Base (IRDB) used in Teleradiology. The application was developed at the University of Florence in the framework of the European Community TELEMED Project. TELEMED overall goals and IRDB requirements are outlined and the resulting architecture is described. IRDB is a multisite database containing radiological images, selected because their scientific interest, and their related information. The architecture consists of a set of IRDB Installations which are accessed from Viewing Stations (VS) located at different medical sites. The interaction between VS and IRDB Installations follows the client-server paradigm and uses an OSI level-7 protocol, named Telemed Communication Language. After reviewing Florence prototype implementation and experimentation, IRDB migration to World Wide Web (WWW) is discussed. A possible scenery to implement IRDB on the basis of WWW model is depicted in order to exploit WWW servers and browsers capabilities. Finally, the advantages of this conversion are outlined.

this paper proposes a model (architecture and protocol) that will help universities and educational institutions to automate student attendance activity. A client server architecture using cryptography is proposed to log attendance details in a secure manner. A protocol is devised such that it is hard for students to submit wrong information into the server and very hard for adversary to impersonate.

This paper describes recent efforts to create a fully interactive visualization system that operates within a standard desktop web browser. We present the client-server architecture of the new system, in which a visualization server is able to stream rendered images to a lightweight client operating within a user's web browser. We show that this system is practical in various usage scenarios, including a marine environmental display and collaborative visualization of massive LIDAR point clouds, and that it is an effective means to bring scientific visualization to low-powered desktops computers and tablets.

Decoupled Edge Physics Algorithms for Collaborative XR Simulations

This work proposes a novel approach to transform any modern game engine pipeline, for optimized performance and enhanced user experiences in extended reality (XR) environments decoupling the physics engine from the game engine pipeline and using a client-server N-1$$ N-1 $$ architecture creates a scalable solution, efficiently serving multiple graphics clients on head-mounted displays (HMDs) with a single physics engine on edge-cloud infrastructure. This approach ensures better synchronization in multiplayer scenarios without introducing overhead in single-player experiences, maintaining session continuity despite changes in user participation. Relocating the Physics Engine to an edge or cloud node reduces strain on local hardware, dedicating more resources to high-quality rendering and unlocking the full potential of untethered HMDs. We present four algorithms that decouple the physics engine, increasing frame rates and Quality of Experience (QoE) in VR simulations, supporting advanced interactions, numerous physics objects, and multiuser sessions with over 100 concurrent users. Incorporating a Geometric Algebra interpolator reduces inter-calls between dissected parts, maintaining QoE and easing network stress. Experimental validation, with more than 100 concurrent users, 10,000 physics objects, and softbody simulations, confirms the technical viability of the proposed architecture, showcasing transformative capabilities for more immersive and collaborative XR applications without compromising performance.
