Purpose - This paper aims to describe the development of a new experimental CAPTCHA (completely automated public turing test to tell computers and humans apart), which is supposed to provide better protection against spam bots compared to the existing captcha solutions. Design/methodology/approach - In the new CAPTCHA, the authors are using animated images of hand gestures to represent letters and numbers. A lot of people use sign language as their primary means of communication, but an automatic algorithm able to reliably recognize such gestures from videos without any additional data has yet to be developed. Findings - The experiment showed that at first, it takes time for people who do not use sign languages in their everyday lives to adapt to the new CAPTCHA, but after several successful recognitions, they have no more trouble with it than with a typical captcha implementation. Originality/value - The paper shows that people with little to no knowledge of sign languages can still recognize gestures on video relatively fast. Therefore, a gesture-based implementation can be used not only on websites aimed at sign language speakers but also as a general-purpose captcha service.

The Canadian federal department of Human Resources Development Canada required a Facilities Planning Guide to support the re-engineered national Income Security Program. The challenge was to produce a guide to address a widely varied audience in regions across Canada, to satisfy a range of stakeholders - and to do it in 60 days in two languages.

This paper provides a description of SAGE, a software package linked to the Arc/Info GIS that can be used to undertake spatial statistical analysis of area based data. The paper is written from the perspective of the user who wishes to undertake exploratory and confirmatory spatial data analysis. The paper discusses design aspects of the package and also the statistical analysis philosophy underlying its contents. The paper describes the statistical analyses which SAGE can perform and details on how it performs them together with some illustrative examples. Detail on visualisation aspects of SAGE are discussed in a separate paper (Haining et al. 2000). The wider contribution of the paper is to build on earlier developments in this area and identify the needs of software packages if they are to enable users to implement effective spatial statistical analysis.

In a majority of networked virtual worlds, object sharing is limited to object geometries only. The BrickNet toolkit extends the sharing of objects to include dynamic object behaviors. This is achieved by combining a structured organizational paradigm for virtual worlds with an interpreted language. Sharing in virtual worlds is handled by transferring the program code that builds the structure and executes the behavior. The range of behaviors that can be shared in BrickNet include simple behaviors, virtual world dependent behaviors, reactive behaviors and capability-based behaviors.

Many would argue that the single, most important job of a SQL server database administrator is to be able to recover your database in the event of loss or damage. Pro SQL server Disaster Recovery helps you meet that goal by showing you how to think about and plan for potential problems. Youll learn to anticipate and reduce the likelihood of a disaster, and to mitigate the effects of a disaster when one does occur. Perhaps most importantly, youll learn how to prepare so that you can return a system to its normal state quickly, ensuring system availability and the continued success and operation of your business. Many SQL server features and technologies are, or can be put to good use in disaster recovery planning. In this book, youll learn about powerful tools and features such as Database Snapshots and Mirroring for data backup and disaster recovery that are present in SQL server 2005, and that are enhanced in SQL server 2008. Also covered are common issues to expect when using these features. This book explores your options by examining the technical details of disaster recovery features and then applying that knowledge to practical scenarios. Theres a human side to disaster recovery planning as well. Like few other activities, disaster recovery planning requires that you work closely with a wide variety of people from all across your organization. People skills are as critical to disaster recovery planning as technical skills, and perhaps more so. This book does not leave you in the dark, but provides sound advice on how to keep disaster recovery planning projects on track, how to avoid dangerous scope creep, and how to work effectively with the variety of personality types that you will encounter. Disaster recovery planning is really about sleep. When you get the call at 3:00 am that your database is lost, dont wake up with that icy feeling in your veins. Instead wake up with confidence that you have a plan in place, a plan that youve practiced, that management h

The basic cache consistency strategy is the use of periodic invalidation reports (IRs) broadcast by the server. Recently, the addition of updated invalidation reports (UIR) has been proposed. The IR+UIR scheme achieves a much shorter query delay than the. basic IR scheme. Previous researches were based on two impractical simplifying assumptions: 1) broadcast traffic is error-free and 2) no other downlink traffic exists in the system. IR partitioning reconstruction lifts these two assumptions on the basic IR and IR+UIR. The (IR partitioning, reconstruction) achieves the following 1) reduces the probability of corruption in IR, 2) improves channel utilization, 3) reduces the average delay in other downlink, traffic. However, there are still some drawbacks. One of the drawbacks is the problem with long disconnection. The major contribution for this paper is to propose an adaptive cache invalidation report in the server either broadcasting invalidation reports segments (IRseg+UIR) or bit sequences (BSs) based on the client disconnection time while spending little uplink and downlink cost. Simulation results have shown, and minimized query delay and data packet delay and improved the number of uplink per successful query using the proposed algorithm.

This paper describes a strategy for actively replicating and updating content for electronic commerce. Active replication and updating of content is achieved by intelligent agents (IA) using a time-invariant fragmentation approach to partitioning and replicating data in a distributed computing environment. Taking into account the time-sensitivity property of data, IAs derive time-invariant fragments for their respective nodes from the query history. A time-invariant fragment (TIF) is that portion of the database whose values do not change during a specified time interval. The algorithm that IAs use in creating TIFs for each node, for a given time interval, is presented. The active replication approach is compared with three other approaches, Full-replication, nonreplication, and materialized view, in terms of data transmission costs. Results indicate that the active approach can be most effective for electronic commerce because of the high percentage of modification queries, the large sire of the network, and the greet number of transactions.
