cloud robotics is transforming industrial automation by combining cloud computing with robotic systems. This paper reviews recent advancements in cloud robotics and their industrial applications, highlighting the synergy between cloud infrastructure and robotic platforms. Key technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the Internet of Things are explored for their roles in enhancing scalability, computational efficiency, and real-time data processing. The paper also addresses challenges such as latency and data security, proposing solutions to overcome them. The findings suggest that cloud robotics can significantly improve productivity, cost-efficiency, and flexibility in manufacturing and other sectors, with future research directions aimed at promoting its broader adoption.

In Smart Manufacturing Environments (SME), the use of cloud robotics is based on the integration of cloud computing and industrial robots, which provides a new technologica approach to task execution and resource sharing compared to traditional industrial robots. However, research on cloud robotics in SME still faces some challenges. First, highly flexible load scheduling mechanisms are immature. Second, traditional optimization mechanisms for the network service quality do not meet the requirements of smart manufacturing due to time variability and service quality dynamics. And, finally, existing learning algorithms used without cloud-assisted resources cause great resource wasting. Accordingly, this paper explores main technologies related to cloud robotics in SME. The research contents include self-adaptive adjustment mechanisms for the service quality of a cloud robot network, computing load allocation mechanisms for cloud robotics, and group learning base, on a cloud platform. The results presented in this paper are helpful to understand the internal mechanisms of perception and interaction, intelligent scheduling and control of cloud robot systems oriented to smart manufacturing, and the design of a cloud architecture oriented to group learning. With the development of cloud computing, big data, and other emerging technologies, the integration of cloud technology and multi-robot systems makes it possible to design multi-robot systems with improved energy efficiency, high real-time performance, and low cost. In order to address the potential of clouds in enhancing robotics for industrial systems, this paper describes the basic concepts and development process of cloud robotics and the overall architecture of these systems. Then, the major driving forces behind the development of cloud robotics are carefully analyzed from the point of view of cloud computing, big data, open source resources, robot cooperative learning, and network connectivity. Subsequently, the key issues and challenges in the current cloud robotic systems are proposed, and some possible solutions are also given. Finally, the potential value of cloud robotic systems in different practical applications is discussed.

This paper assesses some of the key legal and regulatory questions arising from the integration of physical robotic systems with cloud-based services, also called "cloud robotics." The literature on legal and ethical issues in robotics has a strong focus on the robot itself, but largely ignores the background information processing. Conversely, the literature on cloud computing rarely addresses human-machine interactions, which raise distinctive ethical and legal concerns. In this paper, we investigate, from a European legal and regulatory perspective, the growing interdependence and interactions of tangible and virtual elements in cloud robotics environments. We highlight specific problems and challenges in regulating such complex and dynamic ecosystems and explore potential solutions. To illustrate practical challenges, we consider several examples of cloud robotics ecosystems involving multiple parties, various physical devices, and various cloud services. These examples illuminate the complexity of interactions between relevant parties. By identifying pressing legal and regulatory issues in relation to cloud robotics, we hope to inform the policy debate and set the scene for further research. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Purpose - This paper aims to provide an insight into the current state of cloud robotics developments, technology and applications. Design/methodology/approach - Following a short introduction, this paper first considers the potential benefits of cloud robotics. It discusses cloud service providers and then considers a range of recent applications and developments involving humanoid, mobile and industrial robots. This is followed by details of some recent market entrants and their developments. Finally, brief concluding comments are drawn. Findings - cloud robotics is a rapidly developing technology made possible by the current ubiquitous internet connectivity and the growing number of powerful cloud computing services available. Benefits include access to big data sets, open-source algorithms, code and programmes, massively powerful parallel or grid computing and the sharing of information between robots. The technology has been applied successfully to humanoid, industrial, mobile and other classes of robots, often through direct collaborations between robot manufacturers and major IT companies. Several new companies have been established in very recent years to exploit the capabilities of cloud robotic technologies. Originality/value - cloud robotics is a highly topical and rapidly developing field, and this paper provides a detailed insight into recent developments and applications.

cloud robotics is a field of robotics that attempts to use cloud technologies for robotics. The use of the cloud for robotics and automation brings some potential benefits largely ameliorating the performance of robotic systems. However, there are also some challenges. First of all, from the viewpoint of architecture, how to model and describe the architectures of cloud robotic systems? How to deploy the architecture in cloud? Our proposed approach in this paper is based on the principles of software architectures. In particular, we leverage our lightweight architectural solution to solve the architecture problem of cloud robotics and discuss different solutions to deploy cloud robotics system in cloud.

Robots are moving out of factories, service robotics is bringing them to our homes, work environments, cities, and outdoors. While the Robot Operating System (ROS) is promising to open the world of robotics to developers, a proper platform and ecosystem supporting robotic applications development is still missing. This work presents an example of cloud robotics application in which cloud computing is not just complementing limited robot capabilities, but is leveraged to provide a development and operations environment supporting the complete life-cycle of a robotics-enabled application. We relate on our experience building cloud robotics applications spanning heterogeneous hardware (i.e., robots and cloud servers) through a use case scenario.

cloud robotics is expected to play an important role in Industry 4.0 automation processes. Nevertheless, cloud robotics research still lacks comprehensive analysis on implementation issues and standardization. Experimentation testbeds designed for cloud robotics may accelerate research by providing a range of solutions while relieving researchers from implementing the whole cloud robotics stack. In this work, we present a case study over a cloud robotics testbed infrastructure in which we implement a cloud-based real-time autonomous navigation service for autonomous unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). An UGV located 4600 km away from the cloud platform makes use of such service to navigate throughout its environment, delegating to the cloud almost all computation. Results indicate the feasibility of real world cloud robotics implementations and we discuss the challenges and benefits of such approach.

cloud robotics has undergone rapid development. As an important candidate for direct-drive manipulator, switched reluctance machines (SRMs) face significant challenge in terms of control used in cloud robotics because of latency and package losses in network communication. In this paper, predictive current control of SRMs is extended to use in controller upon cloud in the face of latency and package losses. The starting point of predictive model is modified to eliminate errors caused by latency in sensor-controller communication, and the execution of control command sequence is dynamically regulated according to the arrival time of the following sequence to adapt for latency and package losses in controller-actuator communication. The proposed control method is evaluated in a 1.5 kW SRM test platform and comparison with a conventional control method is performed;the results show that the proposed control method has better tracking performance in face of time delay and package losses in transmission.

Networked robotics involves a collection of robots working together to perform complex tasks, such as search and rescue task in disaster management. Because such tasks are beyond the capacity of a single powerful robot, networked robotics has been widely researched. However, the modes of cooperation in traditional networked robotics have been restricted by the inherent physical constraint that all computations are performed in the robotic network, with knowledge sharing being limited to the collective storage in the network. cloud robotics, which allows robots to benefit from the rich storage, computation, and communication resources of modern data centers, is widely accepted as a promising approach to efficient robot cooperation in applications, such as disaster management. In this paper, we study robotic cooperation in cloud robotics. We first give a conceptual view of the nature of this cooperation. We then propose three novel robotic cooperation frameworks for cloud robotics: robotic knowledge sharing cooperation, robotic physical-task cooperation, and robotic computation task cooperation. Finally, we identify several critical challenges, and illustrate the potential benefits of robotic cooperation in cloud robotics.
