Sabarmati and its connection with the Harappan port Lothal and the Nal corridor: A study using multi-sensor data, cloud-computing and multi-platforms

Lothal is situated approximately 30 km inland from the Gulf of Khambhat on the western coast of India in Gujarat. It served as a bustling port during the Bronze Age Harappan period (2600 BCE to 1900 BCE) and was connected to a series of Harappan production and distribution centres dotted along the Gulf of Kachchh and the Rann of Kachchh. Artefacts of foreign nature found in Lothal attest to its intercultural trade relation. Further, Lothal is renowned for its well-preserved brick-walled dockyard and warehouse. However, different views for and against the dockyard are available in archaeological literature. This study revisits the dockyard theory from the landscape perspective and integrates information extracted from early maps, multi-spectral and multitemporal satellite data of different spatial resolutions, and Digital Elevation Models to understand the larger context of the palaeolandscape around Lothal, including both fluvial and coastal areas. The findings offer fresh perspectives on the hydrographic dynamics of the region, highlighting an evident direct connection between Lothal and the former course of River Sabarmati, one of the major rivers in Gujarat that currently flows 20 km east of Lothal. The reconstruction of the palaeolandscape, both fluvial and coastal, complements and verifies certain interpretations related to the dockyard theory, partially bridging the 'credibility gap' in the broader discussion and strengthening the arguments in favour of the dockyard theory. Additionally, the study underscores the significance of integrating various types of geospatial data to understand past landscapes. Further investigation of the reconstructed palaeolandscape, particularly the complex hydrographic network including rivers and creeks, of this historically important region has the potential to contribute to new insights into existing archaeological and geomorphological interpretations and may guide us about the past human adaptation to the natural dynamics.

In this paper, an estimation approach using Moving Horizon Estimator (MHE) is proposed to estimate online the grid impedance between DC/AC converters and the main grid. The proposed approach estimates the states, i.e., DC/AC converter output current, grid voltage, and grid impedance parameters using only voltage and current measurements at the connection point. The MHE is computed online from the Amazon Web Services, which receives the measurements via UDP protocol. Experimental results show that the proposed approach using MHE closely estimates the grid impedance parameters.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the applicability of cloud computing (CC) and the challenges that contribute to more successful projects with a major sustainable construction development. Design/methodology/approach The previous studies provided information on CC implementation barriers, which were then evaluated by 104 construction stakeholders through a questionnaire survey. As a result, the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) approach was used to investigate these barriers. Furthermore, a partial least square structural equation model was used to build a model of these barriers (PLS-SEM). Findings The EFA results revealed that the above-noted factors are in a close relation with three key components, i.e. social, economic and communication. In addition, the proposed model results found the social barrier a key challenge to the implementation of CC. Research limitations/implications The results from this study can help decision-makers to improve the approaches regarding data fragmentation that has great effects on the execution of all construction projects. The focus of the paper is to enhance the data fragmentation processes. In addition, the results would be useful to strengthen the sustainability of existing construction projects by enhancing the implementation of CC. Originality/value The novelty of this research work will provide a solid foundation for critically assessing and appreciating the different barriers affecting the adoption of CC.

EVOLVE is a pan European Innovation Action that aims to fully-integrate High-Performance-computing (HPC) hardware with state-of-the-art software technologies under a unique testbed, that enables the convergence of HPC, cloud and Big-Data worlds and increases our ability to extract value from massive and demanding datasets. EVOLVE's advanced compute platform combines HPC-enabled capabilities, with transparent deployment in high abstraction level, and a versatile Big-Data processing stack for end-to-end workflows. Hence, domain experts have the potential to improve substantially the efficiency of existing services or introduce new models in the respective domains, e.g., automotive services, bus transportation, maritime surveillance and others. In this paper, we describe EVOLVE's testbed, and evaluate the performance of the integrated pilots from different domains.

Containerization has emerged as a systematic way of sharing experiments comprising of code, data, and environment. Containerization isolates dependencies of an experiment and allows the computational results to be regenerated. Several new advancements within containerization make it further easy to encapsulate applications and share lighter-weight containers. However, using containerization for cloud computing experiments requires further improvements both at the container runtime level and the infrastructure-level. In this paper, we lay a vision for using containers as a dominant method for efficient sharing and improved reproducibility of cloud computing experiments. We advocate use of container-compliant cloud infrastructures, inclusion of performance profiles of the application or system architecture on which experiments were performed, and methods for statistical comparison across different container executions. We also outline challenges in the achieving this vision and propose existing solutions that can be adapted and propose new methods that can help with automation.

The adoption of cloud and edge computing for several application motivates the monitoring and controlling a Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) online and remotely. In these scenarios, this work presents a case of study by the application of a hybrid concept of edge-cloud computing. The edge collects the data from the cells and sent directly to the cloud where several Machine Learning algorithms can be built, trained and tested. Then, the trained models are downloaded to the edge and do inferences in real time. The proposed idea presented still an SOC estimator based on Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) with average error below 5%.

This study examines the obstacles that impede the implementation of cloud computing (CC) in small-scale building projects. Based on a comprehensive analysis of relevant scholarly sources, this research paper aims to delineate the many obstacles that are often encountered during the implementation of CC. A comprehensive analysis is conducted based on the replies obtained from a survey of 217 stakeholders in the building sector. Using an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) methodology, this research assesses the interrelated obstacles associated with technological and operational restrictions, risk and privacy considerations, cultural dynamics, behavioural variables, unpredictability, and resource barriers. Furthermore, a model is developed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) in order to get a deeper comprehension of these hindrances. The results of the EFA emphasize the significant impact of risk and privacy barriers in impeding the adoption of CC. The present study offers valuable insights that may inform policymakers in their efforts to enhance the effectiveness of construction projects by addressing the issue of data fragmentation. Through the identification and addressing of these limitations, the research study makes a valuable contribution to the optimization of data fragmentation procedures. Furthermore, it promotes the sustainability of existing building projects by facilitating the more effective exploitation of cloud computing. This paper presents a novel methodology that establishes a foundation for identifying and tackling the many barriers that impede the broad adoption of cloud computing in the construction sector.

Call centers represent the basis in today's market. Nowadays, in every enterprise exist a call center which has the main objective to handle client's issues. This research paper refers to a communication system designed for automatic client interaction, called "cloud computing Customer Communication Center". The communication center comprises: a Unified Communications System (UCS) providing communication channels such as telephony, SMS, email, video, chat, etc.;a Data Processing Server (DPS) which provides support for the operations required by customers and a Voice Interaction Module (VIM) for automatic communication with clients, which consists of a speech recognition module, a speech synthesis module and a dialog management module that communicates through a MRCP (Media Resource Control Protocol) protocol with the Unified Communication System (UCS) and the Data Processing Server (DPS). The "cloud computing Customer Communication Center" integrates support modules for platform functionality, such as: redundant power supply, cloud-based LAN/Wi-Fi broadcasting environment, online platform management and various cloud applications.

Determination of Vegetation Thresholds for Assessing Land Use and Land Use Changes in Cambodia using the Google Earth Engine cloud-computing Platform

As more data and technologies become available, it is important that a simple method is developed for the assessment of land use changes because of the global need to understand the potential climate mitigation that could result from a reduction in deforestation and forest degradation in the tropics. Here, we determined the threshold values of vegetation types to classify land use categories in Cambodia through the analysis of phenological behaviors and the development of a robust phenology-based threshold classification (PBTC) method for the mapping and long-term monitoring of land cover changes. We accessed 2199 Landsat collections using Google Earth Engine (GEE) and applied the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and harmonic regression methods to identify phenological behaviors of land cover categories during the leaf-shedding phenology (LSP) and leaf-flushing phenology (LFS) seasons. We then generated 722 mean phenology EVI profiles for 12 major land cover categories and determined the threshold values for selected land cover categories in the mid-LSP season. The PBTC pixel-based classified map was validated using very high-resolution (VHR) imagery. We obtained a cumulative overall accuracy of more than 88% and a cumulative overall accuracy of the referenced forest cover of almost 85%. These high accuracy values suggest that the very first PBTC map can be useful for estimating the activity data, which are critically needed to assess land use changes and related carbon emissions under the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) scheme. We found that GEE cloud-computing is an appropriate tool to use to access remote sensing big data at scale and at no cost.

In this paper, we present an OWL-based ontology, the cloud computing Ontology (CoCoOn), that defines concepts, features, attributes and relations to describe cloud infrastructure services. We also present datasets that are built using CoCoOn and scripts (i.e. SPARQL template queries and web applications) that demonstrate the real-world applicability of the ontology. We also describe the design of the ontology and the architecture of related services developed with it.
