clusters of GPUs are emerging as a new computational scenario. programming them requires the use of hybrid models that increase the complexity of the applications, reducing the productivity of programmers. We present the implementation of OmpSs for clusters of GPUs, which supports asynchrony and heterogeneity for task parallelism. It is based on annotating a serial application with directives that are translated by the compiler. With it, the same program that runs sequentially in a node with a single GPU can run in parallel in multiple GPUs either local (single node) or remote (cluster of GPUs). Besides performing a task-based parallelization, the runtime system moves the data as needed between the different nodes and GPUs minimizing the impact of communication by using affinity scheduling, caching, and by overlapping communication with the computational task. We show several applicactions programmed with OmpSs and their performance with multiple GPUs in a local node and in remote nodes. The results show good tradeoff between performance and effort from the programmer.

This paper presents HOMPI, a framework for programming and executing task-based parallel applications on clusters of multiprocessors and multi-cores, while providing interoperability with existing programming systems such as MPI and OpenMP. HOMPI facilitates expressing irregular and adaptive master-worker and divide-and-conquer applications avoiding explicit MPI calls. It also allows hybrid shared-memory / message-passing programming, exploiting fully the availability of multiprocessor and multi-core nodes, as it integrates by design with OpenMP;the runtime infrastructure presents a unified substrate that handles local threads and remote tasks seamlessly, allowing both programming flexibility and increased performance opportunities.

People and objects will soon share the same digital network for information exchange in a world named as the age of the cyber-physical systems. The general expectation is that people and systems will interact in real-time. This poses pressure onto systems design to support increasing demands on computational power, while keeping alow power envelop. Additionally, modular scaling and easy programmability are also important to ensure these systems to become widespread. The whole set of expectations impose scientific and technological challenges that need to be properly addressed. The AXIOM project (Agile, eXtensible, fast I/O Module) will research new hardware/software architectures for cyber-physical systems to meet such expectations. The technical approach aims at solving fundamental problems to enable easy programmability of heterogeneous multi-core multi-board systems. AXIOM proposes the use of the task-based OmpSs programming model, leveraging low-level communication interfaces provided by the hardware. Modular scalability will be possible thanks to a fast interconnect embedded into each module. To this aim, an innovative ARM and FPGA-based board will be designed, with enhanced capabilities for interfacing with the physical world. Its effectiveness will be demonstrated with key scenarios such as Smart Video-Surveillance and Smart Living/Home (domotics). (C) 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

A parallel hybrid optimization algorithm for fitting interatomic potentials

In this work we present the parallel implementation of a hybrid global optimization algorithm assembled specifically to tackle a class of time consuming interatomic potential fitting problems. The resulting objective function is characterized by large and varying execution times, discontinuity and lack of derivative information. The presented global optimization algorithm corresponds to an irregular, two-level execution task graph where tasks are spawned dynamically. We use the OpenMP tasking model to express the inherent parallelism of the algorithm on shared-memory systems and a runtime library which implements the execution environment for adaptive task-based parallelism on multicore clusters. We describe in detail the hybrid global optimization algorithm and various parallel implementation issues. The proposed methodology is then applied to a specific instance of the interatomic potential fitting problem for the metal titanium. Extensive numerical experiments indicate that the proposed algorithm achieves the best parallel performance. In addition, its serial implementation performs well and therefore can also be used as a general purpose optimization algorithm. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Pilot library is a new method for programming MPI-enabled clusters in C, targeted at novice parallel programmers. Formal elements from Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP) are used to realize a process/channel model of parallel computation that reduces opportunities for deadlock and other communication errors. This simple model, plus an application programming interface (API) styled after C's formatted I/O, are designed to make the library easy to learn. The Pilot library exists as a thin layer on top of any standard Message Passing Interface (MPI) implementation, preserving MPI's portability and efficiency, with little performance overhead arising as result of Pilot's additional features.

Scalable cluster architecture is ideal to map task level parallelism. Fault-tolerance is an important issue in distributed computing environments. This paper presents a fault-tolerance method for a specialized cluster programming environment. The cluster architecture is assumed to be a pipeline. Implementation of the environment uses the Aglet technology to distribute, manage and coordinate distributed computations in the cluster. Implementation of the environment supports the execution of Java programs designed after the pipeline computation model using the classes provided. A fault model, fault detection method, and recovery scheme are presented in this paper.

Embedded System toolchains are highly customized for a specific System-on-Chip (SoC). When the application needs more performance, the designer is typically forced to adopt a new SoC and possibly another toolchain. The rationale for not scaling performance by using, e.g., two SoCs, is that maintining most of the operations on-chip may allow for higher energy efficiency. We are exploring the feasibility and trade-offs of designing and manufacturing a new Single Board Computer (SBC) that could serve flexibly for a number of current and future applications, by allowing scalability through clusters of SBCs while keeping the same programming model for the SBC. This board is based on FPGAs and embedded processors, and its key points are: i) a fast custom interconnect for board-to-board communication and ii) an easily programmable environment which would allow both the off-loading of code into accelerators (either soft-IP blocks or hard-IP blocks) and, at the same time, the distribution of computation across boards. A key challenge to successfully deploying this paradigm is to properly distribute the threads across several boards without the explicit intervention of the programmer. In this paper we describe how to dynamically and efficiently distribute the computational threads in symbiosis with an appropriate memory model to allow the system scalability, so that we can double the performance by simply connecting two boards without i) changing the basic hardware components (e.g., to a different System-On-Chip) and ii) changing the programming model to follow the vendor specific toolchain. Our approach is to reduce data movement across boards. Our initial experiments have confirmed the feasibility of our approach.
