code refactoring is the process of restructuring existing computer code without changing its external behavior to enhance reusability and maintainability of software components through improving nonfunctional attributes of the software. However, when we refactor source codes using existing refactoring techniques, those techniques do not consider energy consumption as one of the nonfunctional attributes. Reducing energy consumption is one of the important factors to develop embedded and/or mobile software because it is difficult to provide sustainable services based on limited power resources. This paper suggests new refactoring techniques for reducing energy consumption to support the restructuring of existing source codes. Especially we define energy-consuming constructs as suspicious codes that are predicted to consume a lot of energy, and then develop the techniques to remove these constructs. Our techniques can improve the performance as well as the energy efficiency of legacy codes.

With the advent of big data era, the response speed of traditional legacy systems can no longer meet the requirements of users. Many organizations are migrating their legacy systems from a local machine to the cloud so as to reuse the legacy systems as well as improve the performance of big data processing. The MapReduce model of cloud computing makes parallel and distributed programming over a cluster of machines more convenient. This paper presents an approach to refactor the specific sequential code into MapReduce model in cloud migration, and proposes a tool to support the process of code refactoring.

In the multi-core era, much software has been developed using parallel programming technology, such as OpenMP, to take full advantage of the CPU cores. Nevertheless, in the era of big data, ubiquitous systems have enabled data collection on an unprecedented scale, the existing computing power and storage capacity can no longer effectively satisfy the needs of big data processing. MapReduce is a parallel programming model in cloud computing, which provides a new way to cope with the problem of OpenMP program's resource limitations for processing big data. In order to enable the legacy OpenMP-based program to take advantage of the virtue of cloud computing for processing big data, it is worth studying how to refactor it into MapReduce model. A detailed approach for refactoring OpenMP to MapReduce is proposed, and a prototype tool O2MR was developed in this paper. Two experiments show that the refactoring approach is efficient and the tool is helpful to refactoring process. In addition, the program execution times before and after refactoring were compared by five data sets, and the results demonstrate that the refactored program has better performance than the original in the face of big data, and the performance of the refactored program will be better as the amount of data increases.

For safety-critical real-time software, if worst-case execution time (WCET) violates a time constraint, it is considered having a timeliness defect. To fix the defect early with lower cost, a WCET optimization strategy is proposed based on source code refactoring. The strategy guides programmers to search refactoring opportunities in the correct positions and perform refactorings by a reasonable sequence. To this end, the worst-case execution path (WCEP) of a target program is firstly extracted from its control flow graph. Then the WCEP is mapped onto source code by the back-annotation technique. An abstract syntax tree-based invariant path identification algorithm is developed for recognizing the invariant paths from the source-level WCEP. According to the invariant paths and loop statements, the source code is divided into four optimization regions with different priorities. Thus the searching scopes are reduced, and invalid refactorings are avoided. On the basis, the refactoring which has the lowest cost in the same region is performed first. To support the strategy, a cost model of source code refactoring is designed. It mainly considers adverse effects of refactorings on the maintainability of source code. The experimental results showed that the optimization strategy reduced WCET effectively and maximally kept the maintainability. Therefore it is more suitable for WCET optimization in an early programming phase. It is helpful to fix the defects early and then guarantee the timeliness safety of the software.

This paper presents a systematic literature review of deep learning (DL)-based software refactoring, which involves restructuring and simplifying code without altering its external functionality. The study analyzed 17 primary works and found that CNN, RNN, MLP, and GNN are commonly used DL models for code refactoring, with MLP performing the best. However, current research efforts primarily focus on Java code, method-level refactoring, and single language refactoring with varying evaluation methods. The review also highlights the limitations and challenges of DL-based software refactoring and suggests future research directions.

Teaching students to develop code of good quality is important. refactoring - rewriting a program into a semantically equivalent program of better quality - is a common technique to improve code quality. It is therefore relevant for students to learn about refactoring, even for the smaller programs they write as beginners. However, students make mistakes when refactoring programs. Some of these mistakes appear often, and might be caused by misconceptions they have. In this paper, we investigate common student code refactoring misconceptions. We do this by analyzing log data containing program snapshots of students working on refactoring exercises in a tutoring system. We manually inspect all transitions from a correct program state to an incorrect state. We then use grounded theory to identify and categorize misconceptions students might have when refactoring programs. As a result, this work (1) defines the concept of refactoring misconception, and (2) provides an initial list of 25 such misconceptions, together with an accompanying website with full details.

code refactoring has a solid theoretical background while being used in development practice at the same time. However, previous works found controversial results on the nature of code refactoring activities in practice. Both their application context and impact on code quality needs further examination. Our paper encourages the investigation of code refactorings in practice by providing an excessive open dataset of source code metrics and applied refactorings through several releases of 7 open-source systems. We already demonstrated the practical value of the dataset by analyzing the quality attributes of the refactored source code classes and the values of source code metrics improved by those refactorings. In this paper, we have gone one step deeper and explored the effect of code refactorings at the level of methods. We found that similarly to class level, lower maintainability indeed triggers more code refactorings in practice at the level of methods and these refactorings significantly decrease size, coupling and clone metrics.

Methods and tools for refactoring of software have been extensively studied during the last decades, and we argue that there is now a need for additional studies of the effects of refactoring on code quality and external code attributes such as computational performance. To study these effects, we have refactored the central parts of a code base developed in academia for a class of computationally demanding scientific computing problems. We made design choices on the basis of the SOLID principles and we used object-oriented techniques, such as the Gang of Four patterns, in the implementation. In this paper, we discuss the effect on maintainability qualitatively and also analyze it quantitatively using a set of software metrics extending the Chidamber-Kemerer suite. Not surprisingly, we find that maintainability has increased as an effect of the refactoring. We also study performance and find that dynamic binding, which inhibits inlining by the compiler, in the most frequently executed parts of the code makes the execution times increase by over 700%. By exploiting static polymorphism, we have been able able to reduce the relative increase in execution times to less than 100%. We argue that the code version implementing static polymorphism is less maintainable than the one using dynamic polymorphism, although both versions are considerably more maintainable than the original code.

Legacy programs are normally monolithic (that is, all code runs in a single process and is not partitioned), and a bug in a program may result in the entire program being vulnerable and therefore untrusted. Program partitioning can be used to separate a program into multiple partitions, so as to isolate sensitive data or privileged operations. Manual program partitioning requires programmers to rewrite the entire source code, which is cumbersome, error-prone, and not generic. Automatic program partitioning tools can separate programs according to the dependency graph constructed based on data or programs. However, programmers still need to manually implement remote service interfaces for inter-partition communication. Therefore, in this paper, we propose AutoSlicer, whose purpose is to partition a program more automatically, so that the programmer is only required to annotate sensitive data. AutoSlicer constructs accurate data dependency graphs (DDGs) by enabling execution flow graphs, and the DDG-based partitioning algorithm can compute partition information based on sensitive annotations. In addition, the code refactoring toolchain can automatically transform the source code into sensitive and insensitive partitions that can be deployed on the remote procedure call framework. The experimental evaluation shows that AutoSlicer can effectively improve the accuracy (13%-27%) of program partitioning by enabling EFG, and separate real-world programs with a relatively smaller performance overhead (0.26%-9.42%).
