A three-dimensional (3D) chip design strategy will be of increasing significance in association with miniaturization of VLSI circuits. In the design of 3D VLSI and 3D MCM, the placement which is to locate given 3D objects without overlapping each other in the 3D space, becomes an important issue. The 3D placement under the nonoverlapping constraint is called the 3D packing in which minimizing the volume of the package is required. This paper introduces a new coding system to encode the topology of 3D packing as an extension of BSG(Bounded-Sliceline Grid) for 2D packing. The novel coding system is referred to as three dimensional Bounded-Sliceplane Grid(3DBSG). The topology is a set of relative relations assigned to pairs of 3D modules in such a way that one module shall be either "right-of", "rear-of" or "above" the other. Furthermore, we propose an idea to handle L-shaped 3D modules on the 3DBSG. The simulation results in which a standard simulated annealing is utilized as an optimization algorithm, are demonstrated in order to test the validity of our 3D packing method based on the 3DBSG.

LoTTS parent-infant interaction coding scale: Ease of use and reliability in a sample of high-risk mothers and their infants

Reliable and valid measurement of parent-infant interactions is necessary to demonstrate parental skill acquisition, but existing observational coding schemes are too complex for practical use in most human service settings. The LoTTS Parent-Infant Interaction coding System (LPICS) was developed specifically to require minimal training and to be maximally useful for human service (rather than research) settings. The LPICS consists of three global scales and four behavioral counts. Undergraduate students participated in approximately 9 h of training and coding using the LPICS. Low inter-rater reliability scores initially necessitated modifications to the LPICS in order to enhance reliability. The revised scoring procedure showed more promise, particularly for three behavior counts: talking to the infant (ICC=.86, excellent), touching the infant (ICC=.90, excellent), and smiling at the infant (ICC=.66, good), and one global scale: parental warmth (ICC=.58, fair). The revised LPICS may have utility as a brief, simple, and easy-to-teach observational measure of parent-infant interactions. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A stereoscopic video transmission algorithm for an IPTV network based on empirical data

IPTV service is one of the topics where industry and academia are providing more efforts with the purpose of enhancing the systems in existence. One of the potentially biggest advantages of IPTV is the existence of a return channel from the customer to the IPTV service provider, which makes this technology the upcoming TV distribution system. The next big step is to serve stereoscopic video over IP networks. In this paper, we evaluate the stereoscopic video transmission over IP by taking measurements of the bandwidth, delay and jitter. These measurements are useful to test the QoS and QoE of the ITPV service and to demonstrate the need for high-performance stereoscopic compression codecs. Then, we study the performance of four free codecs in order to propose an algorithm to perform the appropriate decisions to transmit stereoscopic video in the IPTV network properly. The algorithm is based on the empirical data obtained from our test and on some analytical considerations. Finally, we show the impact on the network given by the algorithm, and we compare the QoS parameters when each codec is chosen. Copyright (C) 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A Framework for Modelling the Electronic Medical Record

This paper presents a model for an electronic medical record which satisfies the requirements for a faithful and structured record of patient care set out in a previous paper in this series. The model underlies the PEN & PAD clinical workstation, and it provides for a permanent, completely attributable record of patient care and the process of medical decision making. The model separates the record into two levels: direct observations of the patient and meta-statements about the use of observations in decision making and the clinical dialogue. The model is presented in terms of “descriptions” formulated in the Structured Meta Knowledge (SMK) formalism, but many of its features are more general than the specific implementation. The use of electronic medical records based on the model for decision support and the analysis of aggregated data are discussed along with potential use of the model in distributed information systems.

Eye state estimation has been widely applied in many real-world systems, e.g., driver monitoring and smart television. However, it is still an open issue towards accurate and real-time estimation, especially under the scenario of uncontrolled scenes, for instance severely occlusion, viewpoint change, and illumination variances. In this paper, we introduce a robust eye state estimation algorithm, the core of which is a novel discriminative and fast feature encoding scheme to represent the eye state. To further improve the robustness, we also introduce a brightness adjustment algorithm to overcome the variances of environmental illumination. The experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm is extremely effective under various illumination conditions. The proposed algorithm has also been integrated into the next-generation AOC intelligent TV systems.

Frame error rate (FER) prediction in wireless communication systems is an important tool with applications to system level simulations and link adaptation, among others. Although in realistic communication scenarios it is expected to have code-words of different lengths, previous work on FER prediction marginally treated the dependency of the FER on the codeword length. In this paper, we present a method to estimate the FER using codewords of different length. We derive a low complexity FER estimator for frames of different length transmitted over a binary symmetric channel of unknown error probability. We extend this technique to coded systems by the use of effective SNR FER predictors. The proposed estimation scheme is shown to outperform other simpler estimation methods.

In this paper, we study the problem of code design to improve the detection performance of multi-static radar in the presence of signal-dependent clutter. Due to the lack of analytical expression for receiver operation characteristic (ROC), an information-theoretic criterion, namely the KL-divergence, is considered as the design metric. The code design problem is cast as a non-convex optimization problem with a peak-to-average-power ratio (PAR) constraint. We devise a novel method based on Majorization-Minimization to tackle the arising optimization problem. Via numerical investigations, a general analysis of the coded system performance, as well as the behavior of the KL-divergence versus transmit energy is provided.

VESA (The Video Electronics Standards Association) is developing a standard for a visually lossless coding system to be used for the compression of high-bandwidth display data streams. This coding system will complement digital display interface technologies to increase pixel rates or save system power, or both. The display stream coding system is primarily being designed to meet the increased pixel rate needed in high resolution displays expected in the next few years. — This paper recounts VESA's process that led to compression requirements, the selection of a coding system baseline, and strategies to evaluate a visually lossless coding system for consumer electronics and commercial displays. Key concepts in this paper evolved from discussions and documents of VESA's Display Stream Compression Task Group that have been made available to the author with permission from VESA. The Display Stream Compression Standard is forthcoming for publication in the first quarter of 2014.

A cloud-based encoding pipeline which generates streams for video-on-demand distribution typically processes a wide diversity of content that exhibit varying signal characteristics. To produce the best quality video streams, the system needs to adapt the encoding to each piece of content, in an automated and scalable way. In this paper, we describe two algorithm optimizations for a distributed cloud-based encoding pipeline: (i) per-title complexity analysis for bitrate-resolution selection;and (ii) per-chunk bitrate control for consistent-quality encoding. These improvements result in a number of advantages over a simple "one-size-fits-all" encoding system, including more efficient bandwidth usage and more consistent video quality.

5G sets stringent requirement on delay, which means large packets have to be segmented into shorter ones. However, the gain of turbo coding can be severely degraded due to short code size. In this paper, a novel coding and encoding scheme is proposed to obtain high coding gain under short size. The idea is to encode multiple short code blocks cooperatively to obtain a long code size. In the process of encoding, an XOR operation is conducted on certain parts of previously encoded blocks to introduce correlation. The mechanism of successive interference cancelation (SIC) receiver is applied in the decoding procedure and each code block utilizes the extrinsic information from the correlated parts from other code blocks. The scheme incurs no extra delays at reduced complexity. Simulation results show the scheme can yield equivalent or better performance than using traditional turbo code on long code block.
