We examine the decoding of Matrix C in the 802.16e WiMAX standard. An exhaustive search and zero-forcing (ES-ZF) decoder and an exhaustive search and nulling canceling (ES-NC) decoder are proposed for uncoded systems. The computational complexity of Matrix C decoding using the ES-ZF decoder is shown to be the same as the complexity of the ZF decoder for Matrix B decoding with twice the number of receive antennas times the complexity of the maximum likelihood (ML) decoder for Matrix B decoding with twice the number of receive antennas. Matrix C can be implemented in a 2×2 multiple-input multiple-output (MEMO) system using the ES-NC decoder with reduced complexity compared to ML decoding with no performance loss. For coded systems, double pruned trees using a zero-forcing (DPT-ZF) algorithm or nulling canceling (DPT-NC) algorithm are proposed. The DPT-NC decoder can be implemented in a 2×2 MIMO coded system with reduced complexity compared to the Max-Log decoding with no performance loss.

This paper presents an evaluation of the contextual factors of HMM-based speech synthesis and coding systems. Two experimental setups are proposed that are based on successive context addition from phonetic to full-context. The aim was to investigate the impact of the individual contextual factors on the speech quality. In that sense important and unimportant (i.e., not having significant impact on speech quality, also called weak) contextual factors were identified. The results imply that in speech coding the improvement in quality can be achieved just with reconstruction of syllable contexts. The sentence and utterance contexts are unimportant on the decoder side, and it is not necessary to deal with them. Although in speech coding the wider context was not necessary, in speech synthesis current syllable and utterance contexts are more important over others (previous and next word/phrase contexts).

Microfluidics refers to manipulation and control of little amount of fluids flowing into channels of micro-scale size and is the basic technology utilized by Labs-on-a-Chip (LoC) systems. In the recent past researchers have analyzed the possibility to support information exchange between different elements of a LoC. However, support of communication in microfluidic systems relies on the use of appropriate information coding strategies and deep knowledge of channel propagation characteristics. Accordingly, in this paper we compare two different schemes for information coding and evaluate the corresponding capacities depending on the characteristics of the fluids utilized. Furthermore, we discuss how such encoding schemes can be integrated in networking solutions for LoCs.

In this paper we attempt to further demonstrate connections between information theory and control, in a networked setting. Specifically, we consider the communication problem of broadcasting to multiple receivers, when one receiver has a degraded observation of the other's, and causal feedback about channel outputs is provided by both receivers. The encoder has to make decisions on the next channel input based on feedback. In this paper, a posterior matching style feedback based encoding scheme is proposed for the problem setting which achieves the capacity region. First, we look at tightness conditions from the converse of the degraded broadcast channel with feedback that inspires our scheme. Second, we develop a stochastic control problem whose optimal value coincides with the tightness conditions. We next show our proposed scheme is an optimal solution to this problem. Lastly, we prove this scheme achieves any rate in the capacity region by constructing a Lyapunov function that operates on posteriors and is derived from the reward function structure.

A computational technique for determining rate regions for networks and multilevel diversity coding systems based on inner and outer bounds for the region of entropic vectors is discussed. The expression to get rate region in terms of region of entropic vectors is attributed to Yeung and Zhang. An inner bound based on binary representable matroids is discussed that has the added benefit of identifying optimal linear codes. The theorem stated by Hassibi et al. in 2010 ITA is implemented to get H-representation of binary matroid inner bound for more than 4 variables. The computational technique is demonstrated on a series of small examples of multilevel diversity coding systems.

In this paper we propose a new technique for learning a discriminative codebook for local feature descriptors, specifically designed for scalable landmark classification. The key contribution lies in exploiting the knowledge of correspondences within sets of feature descriptors during codebook learning. Feature correspondences are obtained using structure from motion (SfM) computation on Internet photo collections which serve as the training data. Our codebook is defined by a random forest that is trained to map corresponding feature descriptors into identical codes. Unlike prior forest-based codebook learning methods, we utilize fine-grained descriptor labels and address the challenge of training a forest with an extremely large number of labels. Our codebook is used with various existing feature encoding schemes and also a variant we propose for importance-weighted aggregation of local features. We evaluate our approach on a public dataset of 25 landmarks and our new dataset of 620 landmarks (614K images). Our approach significantly outperforms the state of the art in landmark classification. Furthermore, our method is memory efficient and scalable.

Reducing Impulse noise is a very active research area in communication systems. This paper presents a digital smear-desmear technique (SDT) applied to data transmission over band limited channels. A generalized set of Alter design criteria based on minimizing the average bit error probability is introduced. The design criteria were applied to a practical digital filter implementing SDT techniques. The SDT is simulated and combined with coded communication systems for high data transmission rate. Simulation results show that the SDT yields a significant improvement in bit error rates for coded systems subject to impulse noise, relative to the systems with no SDT. The technique also completely removes the error floor caused by the impulse noise.

We investigate the behavior of spatially partially coherent beams (PCBs) in the presence of pointing errors in the space communication environment. Closed form expressions for the optimal coherence length for minimizing outage probability and maximizing average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are derived. In the case of outage probablity, we observe that the optimal coherence parameter does not depend on the pointing error statistics. For average SNR results, PCBs can improve performance when large fixed beam offsets are present. We also provide BER performance analysis results for a convolutionally coded system and demonstrate significant performance improvement using PCBs with optimized parameters.

Subtyping test, i.e., determining whether one type is a subtype of another, are a frequent operation during the execution of object-oriented programs. The challenge is in encoding the hierarchy in a small space, while simulataneously making sure that subtyping tests have efficient implmentation. We present a new scheme for encoding multiple and single inheritance hierarchies, which, in the standardized hierarchies, reduces the footprint of all previsously published schemes. The scheme is called PQ-encoding after PQ-trees, a data structure previously used in graph theory for finding the orderings that satisfy a collection of constraints. In particular, we show that in the traditional object layout model, the extra memory requirement for single inheritance hierarchies is zero. In the PQ-encoding subtyping tests are constant time, and use only two comparisons. Other than PQ-trees, PQ-encoding uses several novel optimization techniques. These techniques are applicable also in improving the performance of otehr, previously published, encoding schemes.
