Error performance of Tunstall coding

The error performance of the Tunstall code is analysed, and a relevant metric defined. Several parameters in the encoding process are considered, with the objective of minimising the effect of errors without sacrificing compression. The results obtained show that the error performance may be significantly improved without loss of compression.

Comparison of perceptually uniform quantisation with average error minimisation in image transform coding

An alternative transform coder design criterion based on restricting the maximum perceptual error of each coefficient is proposed. This perceptually uniform quantisation of the transform domain ensures that the perceptual error will be below a certain limit regardless of the particular input image. The results show that the proposed criterion improves the subjective quality of the conventional average error criterion even if it is weighted with the same perceptual metric.

Object boundary padding technique for improving MPEG-4 video compression efficiency

In MPEG-4. the boundary macro-blocks of reference video objects are padded by replicating the boundary samples towards the exterior. The authors propose the introduction of a linear extrapolation based pre-padding step to minimise prediction errors. Experimental results indicate that gains of up to 7% can be achieved for boundary macro-block coding by this proposed technique.

The activities of the current European RACE and ACTS projects have led to an increasing interest in OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) as a means of combating impulsive noise and multipath effects and making fuller use of the available bandwidth of the system. This paper analyses the performance of OFDM signals in amplifier nonlinearity. In particular, bit error rate (BER) degradation as a result of amplitude limiting or clipping are analysed. In the presence of both nonlinear distortion and additive Gaussian noise, optimized output power back off is provided to balance the requirements of minimum BER and power amplifier efficiency. For this purpose, an OFDM system has been built using the SPW [1] (Signal Processing Worksystem) simulator.

Error-resilient image and video coding for wireless communication systems

Current techniques for coding images and video sources with resilience to channel errors can remove much of the need for complex high-redundancy channel coding and provide a graceful degradation of performance with decreasing channel quality. The main function of these error-resilient techniques is to reduce the propagation of errors within the decoded data. Two main techniques are discussed in detail in this paper: the error-resilient entropy code (EREC) and pyramid vector quantisation (PVQ). The paper concludes with a brief comparison of the relative merits of these systems and areas for further consideration.

A dropout in LZ77 compressed text occurs when a partition of the compressed bitstream has been lost. When variable length codes have been used to encode the literals and lookbacks, it will be difficult to distinguish the start of the next legitimate codeword following the dropout. The problem of recovering the variables may be a classical one. A simple strategy of recovering the variables is simply to pass through the data searching for partial words with three or fewer variables.

Adaptive resynchronisation marker positioning method for error resilient video transmission

For reliable video transmission over error-prone mobile channels, an adaptive resynchronisation marker positioning (RMP) method is proposed for rapidly resynchronising the VLC decoding synchronisation which is often lost due to channel errors. The simulation results show that the proposed adaptive RMP method gives a remarkable improvement over the fixed RMP method.
