cognitive informatics in image semantics description, identification and automatic pattern understanding

In the paper a new way of pattern semantic interpretation directed at automatic semantic classification and image content understanding will be described. Such an understanding will be based on the linguistic theories of pattern classification and is aimed at facilitation of content analysis for some classes of medical patterns. The approach presented in this paper will show the great possibilities of automatic disease interpretation in some analyzed data. The interpretation will be based on cognitive processes, which imitate the psychological processes of understanding the registered patterns as they take place in the brain of a human being. cognitive analysis will be based on languages of shape description and picture grammars which allow the creation of syntactic descriptions of selected anatomic organs together with a definition of the semantic meaning of the changes in their shapes. Such descriptions will further allow creating a semantically-oriented representation of visual data describing pattern features which are useful in medical decisions and computer-aided diagnostic systems. This publication presents the cognitive systems of medical data image analysis. Systems that conduct cognitive analyses are designed so that semantic analyses can be used to interpret data and reconstruct medical images. These systems are built for medical types of data analysis systems. An analysis in classical CIA'S (cognitive Image Analysis Information Systems) will be used to illustrate and present the method of learning new solutions which the systems have no knowledge of. The proposed solution presents the method of building a new class of cognitive systems names E-CIAIS (Extended cognitive Image Analysis Information Systems). (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. The human brain is the most complicated organ in the universe and a new frontier yet to be explored by an interdisciplinary approach. This paper attempts to develop logical and cognitive models of the brain by using cognitive informatics and formal methodologies. This paper adopts a memory-based approach to explore the brain and to demonstrate that memory is the foundation for any kind of natural or artificial intelligence. Logical structures of memories are explored, and cognitive models of the brain are proposed. cognitive mechanisms of the brain, including hypotheses and theories on the thinking engine of the brain, long-term memory establishment, and roles of perceptive eye movement, and sleep in long-term memory development, are investigated. The models and theories can be applied to explain a wide range of fundamental phenomena in psychology, cognitive science, physiology, computing, and neural science.

cognitive informatics (CI) is a burgeoning interdisciplinary domain comprising of the cognitive and information sciences that focuses on human information processing, mechanisms and processes within the context of computing and computer applications. Based on a review of articles published in the Journal of Biomedical informatics (JBI) between January 2001 and March 2014, we identified 57 articles that focused on topics related to cognitive informatics. We found that while the acceptance of Cl into the mainstream informatics research literature is relatively recent, its impact has been significant from characterizing the limits of clinician problem-solving and reasoning behavior, to describing coordination and communication patterns of distributed clinical teams, to developing sustainable and cognitively-plausible interventions for supporting clinician activities. Additionally, we found that most research contributions fell under the topics of decision-making, usability and distributed team activities with a focus on studying behavioral and cognitive aspects of clinical personnel, as they performed their activities or interacted with health information systems. We summarize our findings within the context of the current areas of CI research, future research directions and current and future challenges for CI researchers. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. cognitive informatics (CI) is a transdisciplinary enquiry of computer science, information sciences, cognitive science, and intelligence science that investigates into the internal information processing mechanisms and processes of the brain and natural intelligence, as well as their engineering applications in cognitive computing. The latest advances in CI leads to the establishment of cognitive computing theories and methodologies, as well as the development of cognitive Computers (CogC) that perceive, infer, and learn. This paper reports a set of nine position statements presented in the plenary panel of IEEE ICCI*CC'11 on cognitive informatics in Year 10 and Beyond contributed from invited panelists who are part of the world's renowned researchers and scholars in the field of cognitive informatics and cognitive computing.

cognitive informatics (CI) is a contemporary field of basic studies on the brain, computational intelligence theories and underpinning denotational mathematics. Its applications include cognitive systems, cognitive computing, cognitive machine learning and cognitive robotics. IEEE ICCI*CC'17 on cognitive informatics and cognitive Computing was focused on the theme of neurocomputation, cognitive machine learning and brain-inspired systems. This paper reports the plenary panel (Part I) at IEEE ICCI*CC'17 held at Oxford University. The summary is contributed by invited keynote speakers and distinguished panelists who are part of the world's renowned scholars in the transdisciplinary field of CI and cognitive computing.

This publication presents the idea of cognitive categorisation systems as used in the cognitive informatics field using the example of image analysis systems - UBIAS. cognitive categorisation systems execute semantically-oriented data analysis processes, i.e. analyse meaning based on the semantic contents of analysed data sets. cognitive data analysis processes lead to the in-depth interpretation and understanding of various types of data. This publication presents a selected class of cognitive categorisation systems called the UBIAS (Understanding Based Image Analysis Systems), also referred to as image analysis systems.

This publication discusses intelligent systems for cognitive data categorisation with a particular emphasis on image analysis systems used to analyse economic data. This type of systems used to interpret, analyse and reason work following the operating principles of cognitive information system. cognitive systems interpret complex data by extracting semantic levels from it, which they use to determine the meaning of the data analysed, to cognitively understand it, as well as to reason and forecast changes in the area of the phenomena researched. Thus the course of human processes of learning about the described phenomenon becomes the foundation for developing automatic cognitive systems which are called cognitive data analysis systems.

cognitive informatics studies the natural intelligence and the brain from a theoretical and a computational approach, which rigorously explains the mechanisms of the brain by a fundamental theory known as abstract intelligence, and formally models the brain by contemporary denotational mathematics. This paper, as an extended summary of the invited keynote presented in AMT-BI 2010, describes the interplay of cognitive informatics, abstract intelligence, denotational mathematics, brain informatics, and computational intelligence. Some of the theoretical foundations for brain informatics developed in cognitive informatics are elaborated. A key notion recognized in recent studies in cognitive informatics is that the root and profound objective in natural, abstract, and artificial intelligence in general, and in cognitive informatics and brain informatics in particular, is to seek suitable mathematical means for their special needs that were missing in the last six decades. A layered reference model of the brain and a set of cognitive processes of the mind are systematically developed towards the exploration of the theoretical framework of brain informatics. The current methodologies for brain studies are reviewed and their strengths and weaknesses are analyzed. A wide range of applications of cognitive informatics and denotational mathematics are recognized in brain informatics toward the implementation of highly intelligent systems such as world-wide wisdom (WWW+), cognitive knowledge search engines, autonomous learning machines, and cognitive robots.

This keynote lecture presents a set of the latest advances in cognitive informatics (Cl) that leads to the design and implementation of future generation computers known as the cognitive computers that are capable of thinking and feeling. The theory and philosophy behind the next generation computers and computing technologies are Cl. The theoretical framework of Cl may be classified as an entire set of cognitive functions and processes of the brain and an enriched set of descriptive mathematics. the cognitive computers are created for cognitive and perceptible concept/knowledge processing based on contemporary mathematics such as Concept Algebra, Real-Time Process Algebra, and System Algebra. Because the cognitive computers implement the fundamental cognitive processes of the natural intelligence such as the learning, thinking, formal inference, and perception processes, they are novel information processing systems that think and feel. The cognitive computers are centered by the parallel inference engine and perception engine that implement autonomic learning/reasoning and perception mechanisms based on descriptive mathematics.

Almost all of the hard problems yet to be solved in the above areas share a common root in the understanding of mechanisms of natural intelligence and cognitive processes of the brain. cognitive informatics is perceived as a new frontier that explores the internal information processing mechanisms of the brain, and their engineering applications in computing and the information technology industry.
