Basic studies in denotational mathematics and mathematical engineering have led to the theory of abstract intelligence (aI), which is a set of mathematical models of natural and computational intelligence in cognitive informatics (CI) and cognitive computing (CC). Abstract intelligence triggers the recent breakthroughs in cognitive systems such as cognitive computers, cognitive robots, cognitive neural networks, and cognitive learning. This paper reports a set of position statements presented in the plenary panel (Part II) of IEEE ICCI*CC' 16 on cognitive informatics and cognitive Computing at Stanford University. The summary is contributed by invited panelists who are part of the world's renowned scholars in the transdisciplinary field of CI and CC.

Unveiling the cognitive Mechanisms of Eyes: The Visual Sensor Vs. the Perceptive Browser of the Brain

Eyes as the unique organ possess intensively direct connections to the brain and dynamically perceptual accessibility to the mind. This paper analyzes the cognitive mechanisms of eyes not only as the sensory of vision, but also the browser of internal memory in thinking and perception. The browse function of eyes is created by abstract conditioning of the eye's tracking pathway for accessing internal memories, which enables eye movements to function as the driver of the perceptive thinking engine of the brain. The dual mechanisms of the eyes as both the external sensor of the brain and the internal browser of the mind are explained based on evidences and cognitive experiences in cognitive informatics, neuropsychology, cognitive science, and brain science. The finding on the experiment's internal browsing mechanism of eyes reveals a crucial role of eyes interacting with the brain for accessing internal memory and the cognitive knowledge base in thinking, perception, attention, consciousness, learning, memorization, and inference.

Semantic Manipulations and Formal Ontology for Machine Learning Based on Concept Algebra

Towards the formalization of ontological methodologies for dynamic machine learning and semantic analyses, a new form of denotational mathematics known as concept algebra is introduced. Concept Algebra (CA) is a denotational mathematical structure for formal knowledge representation and manipulation in machine learning and cognitive computing. CA provides a rigorous knowledge modeling and processing tool, which extends the informal, static, and application-specific ontological technologies to a formal, dynamic, and general mathematical means. An operational semantics for the calculus of CA is formally elaborated using a set of computational processes in real-time process algebra (RTPA). A case study is presented on how machines, cognitive robots, and software agents may mimic the key ability of human beings to autonomously manipulate knowledge in generic learning using CA. Bridging Inference Based Sentence Linking Model for Semantic Coherence

As the various social Medias emerge on the web, how to link the large scale of unordered short texts with semantic coherence is becoming a practical problem since these short texts have vast decentralized topics, weak associate relations, abundant noise and large redundancy. The challenging issues to solve the above problem includes what knowledge foundation supports sentence linking process and how to link these unordered short texts for pursuing well coherence. Herein, the authors develop bridging inference based sentence linking model by simulating human beings' discourse bridging process, which narrows semantic coherence gaps between short texts. Such model supports linking process by implicit and explicit knowledge and proposes different bridging inference schemas to guide the linking process. The bridging inference based linking process under different schemas generates different semantic coherence including central semantics, concise semantics and layered semantics etc. To validate the bridging inference based sentence linking model, the authors conduct some experiments. Experimental results confirm that the proposed bridging inference based sentence linking process increases semantic coherence. The model can be used in short-text origination, e-learning, e-science, web semantic search, and online question-answering system in the future works.

This issue of IJCINI presents a special issue on Ambient Intelligence and Arts edited by Atha-nasios V. Vasilakos, as well as related regular papers in cognitive informatics and natural intelligence. Ambient Intelligence (AmI) is an innovative paradigm of adaptive network technologies that integrates technologies ranging from ubiquitous computing to autonomous and intelligent systems. AmI adopts a notion that technologies embedded in our natural surroundings will be invisibly presented whenever we need it, attuned to all our senses, adaptive to users and context, and autonomously acting.

Semantic analysis in cognitive UBIAS & E-UBIAS systems

This publication presents the use of semantic analysis in IT processes of data interpretation and understanding. These processes form a part of a field called cognitive informatics, which encompasses subjects related to the semantic analysis and interpretation of data leading to understanding the analysed data sets. Examples of applications of this type of analysis methods will be shown using the case of an IT system for the cognitive analysis of image data presenting X-ray images lesions. The presented UBIAS (Understanding Based Image Analysis Systems) designed for the cognitive analysis of image data are supplemented with processes of biometric analysis, identification and verification of persons. This type of solution can be introduced due to defining formalisms of linguistic data description proposed as part of E-UBIAS systems (Extended Understanding Based Image Analysis Systems). These systems are used for the personal and authentication analysis of an individual and form one of the main subjects of this publication. Semantic analysis dedicated to cognitive semantic interpretation solutions will be discussed using two different applications as examples. The first is about understanding medical image data showing lesions of foot bones. The second are the results of work on analysing palm bone lesions, which laid foundations for a new class of E-UBIAS systems for biometric verification and identification of persons. Human traits and needs are the fundamental force underlying almost all phenomena in human task performances, engineering organizations, and societies. This paper explores the cognitive foundations of human traits and cognitive properties of human factors in engineering. The fundamental traits of human beings are identified, and the hierarchical model of basic human needs is formally describes. The characteristics of human factors and their influences in engineering organizations and socialization are explored. Based on the models of basic human traits, needs, and their influences, driving forces behind the human factors in engineering and society are revealed. A formal model of human errors in task performing is derived, and case studies of the error model in software engineering are presented.

A theory of fuzzy probability is presented based on fuzzy sets, which extends the conventional evenly distributed probability space to a complex distribution of fuzzy probability space. A mathematical model of fuzzy probability is formally introduced in the fuzzy sample space. Algebraic operators of fuzzy probability are rigorously described with a set of theorems on the algebra of fuzzy probabilities. Typical applications of the fuzzy probability theory are illustrated for dealing with random fuzzy events, fuzzy causations, and semantic uncertainties in formal inference, qualification, quantification, classification, cognitive linguistics, cognitive informatics, computational intelligence, and cognitive computing.

Interpreting the internal structure of a connectionist model of the balance scale task

One new tradition that has emerged from early research on autonomous robots is embodied cognitive science. This paper describes the relationship between embodied cognitive science and a related tradition, synthetic psychology. It is argued that while both are synthetic, embodied cognitive science is antirepresentational while synthetic psychology still appeals to representations. It is further argued that modern connectionism offers a medium for conducting synthetic psychology, provided that researchers analyze the internal representations that their networks develop. The paper then provides a detailed example of the synthetic approach by showing how the construction (and subsequent analysis) of a connectionist network can be used to contribute to a theory of how humans solve Piaget's classic balance scale task.

Creativity is a gifted ability of human as a higher-level cognitive process. This paper formally investigates into the cognitive process of creation and creativity as one of the most fantastic life functions. The cognitive foundations of creativity are explored, which explain the space of creativity, the approaches to creativity, the relationships of creation and problem solving, and the attributes of creative researchers. A set of mathematical models of creation and creativity is established on the basis of the tree structures and properties of human knowledge known as concept trees. The measurement of creativity is quantitatively analyzed, followed by the formal elaboration of the cognitive process of creation as a part of the Layered reference Model of the Brain (LRMB).
