This paper deals with automated text categorization (or classification) into predefined categories. We present a concept-based approach where texts are considered in a more semantical way than classical vector of terms. An agreeing measure is also defined in order to improve the categorization process. Experimental results show the benefit obtained with our proposal.

The paper explores the climate crisis discourse in literature with the focus on the genre of climate fiction. The material of the study is a famous Hurricane Katrina novel Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward. The main aim of the research is to enhance access to textual data collection, mark up and tag cognitive structures in climate fiction texts. We draw on the cognitive semantic approach and computational linguistic techniques to demonstrate how mental conceptual images of hurricane associate in the text. The methods proposed are intended to define the dominant topics, visualize distribution patterns, and establish correlations between hurricane-centered semantic-epistemic categories. The dominant themes of the novel ‒ nature control and survival ‒ demonstrate how climate fiction engages with anthropogenic climate change, as well as highlight the ways in which climate fiction novels blur the boundaries between the present, past, and future.

In this paper, we proposed a Bag-of-Words image representation method in-spired by visual attention by applying computational visual attention technology to the representation of images, thus to boost the performance of the object discovery. First, a computational visual attention model was built on the real eye tracking data. With this attention model, we can find the most salient regions from the image, and then representing the image by emphasizes the visual words in these regions. Thus, we can get a Bag of Words image representation with more discriminative power, reducing the confusion intruded by the background on the images. Beyond discovering the objects from the images, with the guidance of the visual attention model, we are also able to find their locations. The experiment was carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experimental results showed that the proposed method improves the performance of the object discovery algorithm.

Prioritizing software requirements includes negotiation among people involved in the process as well as an acceptance of the prioritization criteria. The analysis includes negotiation as an important issue, which becomes extremely difficult, as clients often do not know exactly what they need. To overcome this situation, aiming at improving stakeholder's negotiation, we propose reducing the gap of misunderstanding between them by the use of cognitive science. In this paper, we introduce a case study showing that cognitive profiles may affect requirement prioritization. A controlled experiment shows that elicitation techniques should be carefully selected according to cognitive skills to improve prioritization results.

The production pressure of shale gas well is a key parameter for guiding the yield allocation, thus the prediction of production pressure based on historical data can significantly impair the optimization of the subsequent production. However, the strong nonlinear correlation among the historical production data weakens the effect of traditional linear prediction method. Hence, a novel prediction and data analysis method for the shale gas well production pressure based on Elman neural network is proposed in this paper. First, the adaptive segmentation algorithm is used to piecewise eliminate the incomplete and abnormal data to guarantee the accuracy of the prediction. Second, the correlation analysis of production data is developed by Spearman method. Finally, Elman neural network is applied in predicting the production pressure of shale gas well. Compared with BP neural network and curve fitting prediction, the experimental results of the shale gas in Fuling Jiaoshiba area indicate that the proposed method can effectively improve the prediction accuracy of production press.

The cognitive models of internal language processing in the brain are fundamental areas in cognitive informatics. Neuropsychology is a useful method which effectively reveals the mechanisms of the knowledge representation of natural intelligence. Because reading is a basic intelligence processing, a model based on neuropsychological research may explain the fundamental mechanism of the reading process from clinical aspect. This article presents a novel cognitive model to explain the process of reading Chinese characters. A study of a Chinese patient with surface dyslexia indicates that there are two distinctive pathways in reading Chinese characters. And the whole process of reading Chinese characters is a nested process. The model that explains the mechanisms of reading process in the brain is described, and the physical and physiological meanings of this model are explained. In summary, this new novel model can be employed to contribute for reading model development of artificial intelligence.

Reasoning trace is a declarative knowledge structure that captures the mental states and decision-making sequence in the action-perception cycle of a cognitive agent. This paper presents a formal representation of introspecti ve reasoning trace in cognitive architecture CARINA. Denotational Mathematics is used to describe the formal representation of the introspective reasoning traces. The cognitive function of perception in CARINA was used as example for the implementation of the model.

In recent years, considerable amount of research has been dedicated to the integration of artificial cognitive functionalities into informatics. With the immense growth in volume of cognitive content handled by both artificial and natural cognitive systems, the scientific treatment of new and efficient communication forms between such cognitive systems is inevitable. In this paper, we provide the first definition of cognitive infocommunications, a multidisciplinary field which aims to expand the information space between communicating cognitive systems (artificial or otherwise). Following this definition, we specify the modes and types of communication which make up cognitive infocommunications. Through a number of examples, we describe what is expected from this new discipline in further detail.

This research investigates the effectiveness of icons in memory-related tasks, focusing on two icon styles (Solid and Outline) and two semantic classifications (Resemblance and Abstract). Through the N-Back task and electroencephalogram (EEG) measurements, the study aims to provide quantitative insights into memory load and recall speed. Twelve University of Kent students participated in an experiment involving 1-Back and 2-Back tests, using four icon combinations: Solid Resemblance, Solid Abstract, Outline Resemblance, and Outline Abstract. Each participant completed eight tests, during which N-Back reaction times, accuracy, and EEG data were recorded using a 32-channel wireless brain-computer interface (BCI). Statistical analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon signed rank test to evaluate reaction times and event-related potentials (ERPs). The results revealed no significant differences in recall speed between the Solid and Outline icon styles. However, contrary to previous research favoring Resemblance icons, Abstract icons were recalled significantly faster, particularly in the Outline style. However, Outline Abstract icons exhibited a significantly smaller P300 amplitude compared to Outline Resemblance icons, indicating a higher memory load. These findings suggest that Outline Resemblance icons may offer better usability due to their lower memory load but Outline Abstract icons if recall speed is the key. The study also employed N400 analysis to further explore the semantic processing of the icon combinations. These findings underscore the need for further research into the various dimensions of icons to better understand their impact on memory performance.

In this study, we sought to determine the affordance rules for car drivers using recorded driving data for narrow crossing roads in Japan. Using constraint logic programming, we solved the path-planning problem using situated affordance rules, as a first step toward car driving affordance for humans. To model path planning, we considered the case of driving across a junction on a Tokyo road. The environment is modeled using the space with the 2D surface as a constraint for driving the car. The ecological approach to perception was originally developed by J G Gibson in his book “Ecological approach to visual perception (1979)”. His theory is useful in perceiving the prediction in the environment. This prediction is not based on past memory, but rather on the nature of human cognitive activities. The goal of this study is to explore a computational model using logic programming constraints. We intend to find the human affordance in driving and spatial relations in order to predict environmental risks on the street.
