Apathy Towards the Integration of Usability Work: A Case of System Justification

In this article, we report from a case study of an agile software development organization and we study in particular the developers' and product managers' attitudes towards integrating usability work into software development. We offer explanations based on system justification theory illuminating what would-be integrators might be up against. The analysis shows how the developers only pay lip service to usability work and how they treat users superficially. It further shows how that leads to stereotyping of usability designers and users in order to preserve status quo, and how internalization of inequality between the developers and usability designers rationalizes the preservation of status quo. These findings will have significant implications for managers of software development.

Dual analysis for helping developers to find collaborators based on co-changed files: An empirical study

software developers must collaborate at all stages of the software life-cycle to create successful complex software systems. To enable this collaboration, social coding platforms, for example, GitHub, include an increasing number of tools to support collaboration. However, for large projects with hundreds of dynamic developers, such as several successful open-source projects, it can be complex to find developers with the same interest and familiarity and thus, gain suitable collaborations and new insights. In this context, resources and efforts may be wasted, discouraging many developers from contributing. Moreover, it can be costly to manage many contributions, which is another challenge for the maintainer who wants to take advantage of this small, timid, but valuable contribution made by a volunteer developer in a short time. In this context, this paper presents an empirical study aiming to evaluate two strategies to recommend collaborators based on co-changed files. Inspired in the TF-IDF (Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency) weighting scheme established in the Information Retrieval field, these strategies first estimate the importance of relevant files modified by developers and use these estimates to represent each developer "profile". As a second step, they estimate the similarity between developers using the Cosine metric, providing top-ranked developers according to this measure as recommendations. We evaluated these strategies based on an extensive survey with 102 real-world developers. We observed that developers have interest and familiarity with the co-changed files for all strategies evaluated. These considerations are of relevance because many opportunities for contributions to the project are linked to coding. Thus, theses results may indicate one less barrier for improving collaboration among developers. Overall, the strategies present an acceptance rate of up to 81%, contributing to the discovery of further collaborators.

Open Source (OS) offers new ways of career for software developers. The article describes relevant competencies in a systematic structure along characteristic principles and challenges in Open Source projects. The results are based on a Grounded Theory content analysis of interviews with Open Source software developers, their project managers and human resource managers in Open Source software companies. Implications for future Human Resource Management in software companies are presented as an outlook.

A large international engineering office in Germany needed to double in size in 12 months. We designed an onboarding programme within 3 months to help it do so efficaciously. We wanted to optimize for: fast iterations in the programme rollout, to keep the 'flywheel spinning' by reducing drag on current staff, rapid acceleration where new hires contributed quickly, and smooth integration where new hires adapted to the engineering, company, and country cultures. To reduce drag we onboarded in cohorts and involved existing practitioners in the design and discussion. To encourage contributions quickly we built contributions into the sessions, we also streamlined IT Support. To help new hires adopt the culture we encouraged help and mentoring within and across cohorts. For fast iterations, we incorporated existing islands of onboarding, involved local technical staff in design and delivery of hands-on training, and applied analytics to help improve the practice. And we launched early to bootstrap our learning and evaluation. Our approach worked;new hires were able to make meaningful contributions within a week and they scored the onboarding programme positively (8.5 NPS).

In globally distributed software development, many software developers have to collaborate and deal with issues of collaboration. Although collaboration is challenging, collaborative development produces better software than any developer could produce alone. Unlike previous work which focuses on the proposal and evaluation of models and tools to support collaborative work, this paper presents an interview study aiming to understand (i) the motivations, (ii) how collaboration happens, and (iii) the challenges and barriers of collaborative software development. After interviewing twelve experienced software developers from GitHub, we found different types of collaborative contributions, such as in the management of requests for changes. Our analysis also indicates that the main barriers for collaboration are related to non-technical, rather than technical issues.

This paper is an Action Research about adopting Mob Programming and Simultaneous Style Pair Programming to develop a battle royale game called Pirate Ship Battles. Mob Programming helps the developers to learn an open-source framework for games called Phaser and another one called Jest to automatization of the tests. The following are two examples of insights that occurred respectively in the first and third cycles of action research. The team collaboratively agreed to start by learning in a Mob Programming doing the infra-structure to the tests and also to deepen the knowledge about Phaser should help in the next parts of the project. Another example of insight occurred in the third cycle of this action research is about testing activity, fixing the bugs, was observed funnier comparing with testing alone. The team reported it was funnier testing altogether, when a mistake happens to run new code, everybody paying attention to the projector on the fault, a ready joke. Perhaps, because they are friends and the project is a game. Another possible explanation about our experience of funnier testing activity in a Mob Programming compared to testing alone is that we humans are social beings. Concluding, the source code of the game is of excellent quality as evaluated by CodeClimate by classifying it with grade A, the developers enjoyed, and both approaches increased the learnings.

The Brazilian Public software Portal (BPS Portal) is a software ecosystem promoted by the Brazilian Government in order to share public software projects among the different federal administration sectors and entities. Although collaboration in the development of Free/Libre/Open Source software (FLOSS) projects is considered one of the decisive factors for its success, there are no studies on its level in the BPS Portal. In addition, there exist few recent studies on the current state of the ecosystem, primarily regarding possible changes of incentive by its promoter, the Federal Government. In this context, an exploratory study was carried out on the GitLab platform of the BPS Portal with two different views: one regarding the representation and historical analysis of its life cycle and its different phases;and another in relation to the level of collaboration within each public software. The results indicated that the BPS Portal would currently be in the final phase of its life cycle ( termination). It was also possible to identify a higher level of collaboration in public software created during the amplification phase.

Perceptions of open-source software developers on collaborations: An interview and survey study

With the emergence of social coding platforms, collaboration has become a key and dynamic aspect to the success of software projects. In such platforms, developers have to collaborate and deal with issues of collaboration in open-source software development. Although collaboration is challenging, collaborative development produces better software systems than any developer could produce alone. Several approaches have investigated collaboration challenges, for instance, by proposing or evaluating models and tools to support collaborative work. Despite the undeniable importance of the existing efforts in this direction, there are few works on collaboration from perspectives of developers. In this work, we aim to investigate the perceptions of open-source software developers on collaborations, such as motivations, techniques, and tools to support global, productive, and collaborative development. Following an ad hoc literature review, an exploratory interview study with 12 open-source software developers from GitHub, our novel approach for this problem also relies on an extensive survey with 121 developers to confirm or refute the interview results. We found different collaborative contributions, such as managing change requests. Besides, we observed that most collaborators prefer to collaborate with the core team instead of their peers. We also found that most collaboration happens in software development (60%) and maintenance (47%) tasks. Furthermore, despite personal preferences to work independently, developers still consider collaborating with others in specific task categories, for instance, software development. Finally, developers also expressed the importance of the social coding platforms, such as GitHub, to support maintainers, and contributors in making decisions and developing tasks of the projects. Therefore, these findings may help project leaders optimize the collaborations among developers and reduce entry barriers. Moreover, these findings may support

software engineering in open source projects faces similar challenges as in traditional software development ( coordination of and cooperation between contributors, change and release management, quality assurance,...), but often uses different means of solving them. This leads to some salient distinctions between both worlds, especially with respect to communication and how technical issues are addressed. The variations within open source software (OSS) communities are considerable, and many different approaches are currently in use, ranging from informal conventions to highly systematic, formally specified and rigidly applied processes. We discuss the archetypal best practises in the field, illustrate them by presenting example projects, and provide a comparison to traditional approaches.

Open Source Community Processes: Implications on Micro and Macro Level

In this paper, we will discuss the existence and form of open source community processes, whether they differ between projects, and whether they have any implications on both micro and macro level. We will take a look at how different processes can impact the work and the resulting quality within projects, as well as on macro or project level outcomes like success or efficiency. We will also present as well as validate a research model to explain process adoption and implica-tions.
