Software developers spend significant time gaining and maintaining awareness of fellow developers' activities. FASTDash is a new interactive visualization that seeks to improve team activity awareness using a spatial representation of the shared code base that highlights team members' current activities. With FASTDash, a developer can quickly determine which team members have source files checked out, which files are being viewed, and what methods and classes are currently being changed. The visualization can be annotated, allowing programmers to supplement activity information with additional status details. It provides immediate awareness of potential conflict situations, such as two programmers editing the same source file. FASTDash was developed through user-centered design, including surveys, team interviews, and in situ observation. Results from a field Study show that FASTDash improved team awareness, reduced reliance on shared artifacts, and increased project-related communication. Additionally, the team that participated in our field study continues to use FASTDash.

Many automated test generation techniques have been proposed for finding crashes in Android apps. Despite recent advancement in these approaches, a study shows that Android app developers prefer reading test cases written in natural language. Meanwhile, there exist redundancies in bug reports (written in natural language) across different apps that have not been previously reused. We propose collaborative bug finding, a novel approach that uses bugs in other similar apps to discover bugs in the app under test. We design three settings with varying degrees of interactions between programmers: (1) bugs from programmers who develop a different app, (2) bugs from manually searching for bug reports in GitHub repositories, (3) bugs from a bug recommendation system, Bugine. Our studies of the first two settings in a software testing course show that collaborative bug finding helps students who are novice Android app testers to discover 17 new bugs. As students admit that searching for relevant bug reports could be time-consuming, we introduce Bugine, an approach that automatically recommends relevant GitHub issues for a given app. Bugine uses (1) natural language processing to find GitHub issues that mention common UI components shared between the app under test and other apps in our database, and (2) a ranking algorithm to select GitHub issues that are of the best quality. Our results show that Bugine is able to find 34 new bugs. In total, collaborative bug finding helps us find 51 new bugs, in which eight have been confirmed and 11 have been fixed by the developers. These results confirm our intuition that our proposed technique is useful in discovering new bugs for Android apps.

Computer-supported collaborative Learning (CSCL) is a pedagogical strategy associated with how learners construct knowledge with a group by computer-based learning system. In recent years, most of the computer-based learning systems record the interaction log of each learner when developing course assignments. However, the recorded data is facing a challenge to expose the learners behaviors during the course and to design a computer-supported collaborative learning activity. To address those challenges in this paper, a novel collaborative programming tool called Software Project Development and Insight Learning Environment (SPDI Learning Environment) is described. The SPDI Learning Environment allows learners of computer science to develop course assignments collaboratively. Besides, it allows instructors to investigate the learners behaviors by associating a web-based integrated development environment (IDE) with Big Data analysis pipeline and Visualization Dashboard. In addition to collect real data from courses, we designed learning activities to help teachers to engage the field of CSCL and Learning Analytics.

This paper employs facial features to recognize emotions during a coding activity with 50 children. Extracting group-level emotional states via facial features, allows us to understand how emotions of a group affect collaboration. To do so, we captured joint emotional state using videos and collaborative experience using questionnaires, from collaborative coding sessions. We define groups' emotional state using a method inspired from dynamic systems, utilizing a measure called cross-recurrence. We also define a collaborative emotional profile using the different measurements from facial features of children. The results show that the emotional cross recurrence (coming from the videos) is positively related with the collaborative experience (coming from the surveys). We also show that the groups with better experience than the others showcase more positive and a consistent set of emotions during the coding activity. The results inform the design of an emotion-aware collaborative support system.

Pair programming is a programming technique in which pair of people doing programming on a single machine. The programming pair consists of a driver and a navigator or observer. The driver addresses the operational issues;i. e., responsible for implementing the current module in hand. The navigator addresses the strategic issues;i. e., keeps in mind the strategic direction the code must take. Pair programming is a dynamic process and pairing aids the rapid dispersal of system knowledge through the team while developing it. Since most of the pair programming experiments were not conducted as described in extreme programming and the empirical evidence of pair programming is mixed we were not got the true picture about the impact created by pair programming on software development. In this paper, we evaluated the dynamic pair programming methodology with static pair programming and traditional individual programming. The empirical evidence shows that static pair programming is the most expensive and slower technology than dynamic pair programming and individual programming technologies. It also indicates that dynamic pair programming is the fastest software development methodology than static pair programming and traditional individual programming methodologies.

Pair programming and peer code review are two collaborative inspection methods that improve the quality of software. These light-weight review techniques are low-cost alternatives to formal inspections and rigorous reviews that commonly remove 90% of software defects before even the first test case is run. While pair programming has many advocates, evidence suggests that pair programming is not as useful as claimed and the requirement of the pairs to co-locate is hindrance on many development projects. Peer code reviews, however, have been shown to be just as effective as pair programming and are a better fit for many of today's software efforts that are being developed collaboratively, but asynchronously, in the cloud. In this paper we demonstrate peer review's effectiveness as compared to pair programming in the context of Test Driven Development (TDD), a popular agile programming technique that's rapidly gaining mainstream acceptance. The empirical evidence also shows that equal quality programs can be produced at a lower cost (28% less than pair programming) using a peer review technique in TDD as compared with traditional pair programming

The increasing complexity of the software systems currently developed also increases the need for collaboration between multiple developers. In this paper, we propose and describe a collaborative environment in virtual reality with advanced features like live programming, UML class diagram visualization, and round-trip engineering. We conducted a user study that focuses on evaluating the use of VR in collaboration and aims to confirm whether such an approach is more effective compared to classical approaches when performing programming tasks. We evaluated two collaboration styles: a tutor-student approach that is common in academia and collaborative programming typical for pair programming in practice. The results showed that the proposed collaborative virtual reality environment was more attractive, stimulating, and novel than traditional approaches.

The concept of artificial intelligence has long captured the imagination of popular culture, perhaps even inspiring some to pursue formal study in computer science. There is a growing interest in an offshoot of the basic idea of machine intelligence called "socially intelligent computing," which is not focused on independent machine intelligence, but on how systems that involve machines and people through different forms of interactions create new types of intelligent systems. Today's entering college freshman are often already experienced with collaborative technologies and social computing systems, so it makes sense to consider introducing topics on socially intelligent computing in introductory computer science courses. This is because there is a clear connection between social computing and socially intelligent computing, and these topics might also provide some students with a new incentive to consider pursuing formal study in computer science. In this paper, a framework is presented for teaching socially intelligent computing principles at the level of an introductory Computer Science course.
