This paper describes three color image coding schemes combining linear prediction and iterated function systems, Linear prediction is based on the known autoregressive model, while iterated function systems (IFS) are implemented using quadtree partitioning. After describing the coding schemes, comparisons are carried out in terms of objective results. Simulation studies indicate that the proposed coding schemes produce images of quality ranging from fairly good to good, while performing significantly better than IFS alone with respect to computing time. In this paper, we present a new algorithm that utilizes mathematical morphology for pyramidal coding of color images. We obtain lossy color image compression by using block truncation coding at the pyramid levels to attain reduced data rates. The pyramid approach is attractive due to low computational complexity, simple parallel implementation, and the ability to produce acceptable color images at moderate data rates. In many applications, the progressive transmission capability of the algorithm is very useful. We will show experimental results for color images at data rates of 1.89 bits/pixel.

This paper proposes a color image coding algorithm based on shape-adaptive all phase biorthogonal transform (SA-APBT). This algorithm is implemented through four procedures: color space conversion, image segmentation, shape coding, and texture coding. Region-of-interest (ROI) and background area are obtained by image segmentation. Shape coding uses chain code. The texture coding of the ROI is prior to the background area. SA-APBT and uniform quantization are adopted in texture coding. Compared with the color image coding algorithm based on shape-adaptive discrete cosine transform (SA-DCT) at the same bit rates, experimental results on test color images reveal that the objective quality and subjective effects of the reconstructed images using the proposed algorithm are better, especially at low bit rates. Moreover, the complexity of the proposed algorithm is reduced because of uniform quantization.

Despite the existence of the current standard for still image compression namely JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group), alternative techniques for image compression are being investigated due to the need for fast and high quality storage and transmission of large datasets for distribution through the Internet or in CD-ROM. The use of the wavelet transform for multi-resolution pyramid decomposition of images for data compression and transmission has already been successfully employed by a number of researchers using the common frame of linear subband filtering techniques. However, to achieve a desired compression ratio for a specific class of images, an optimized compression algorithm needs to be developed by considering all stages, i.e. from initial transform mapping to final encoding. This paper addresses the suitability and requirement of further development of a wavelet pyramid coding in compressing color images, specifically the color Visible Human digital photographic dataset. The distinct advantages of a newly developed adaptive vector quantization (VQ) over commonly used scalar quantization and conventional VQ of the wavelet decomposed error pyramids are also discussed.

Inter-color correlation between the luminance component and chrominance components has been utilized for color image coding for years. However, the correlation has not been clearly analyzed. In this paper, we analyze the inter-color correlation and answer two questions related to color image coding: (1) what kind of inter-color correlation exists in color images after the discrete wavelet transform?;and, (2) how strong is it? This analysis helps us to find a most suitable inter-color context and eventually leads to a new embedded color image codec. By using the discovered inter-color context, significant performance improvement can be achieved when encoding chrominance components.

In this paper, we proposed a bit-rate adjustable color image compression technique based on block truncation coding. To exploit the similarity among the neighboring pixels, the quadtree segmentation technique is used to divide the color image into variable-sized blocks based on their block activities. Different rules are used to encode the image blocks of different sizes. Experimental results reveal that good image qualities of the reconstructed color images can be achieved by the proposed technique while keeping low bit rates.

Two color image coding schemes based on single bit map block truncation coding are proposed in this paper. The first scheme employs the optimal rule for single bit map generation. In addition, the quantization level recomputation process is designed. By using these two techniques, a fixed bit rate image coding scheme is introduced. To further cut down the required bit rates of the first scheme, the similar block prediction technique and the bit map omission technique are employed in the second scheme. According to the experimental results, the first scheme proposed significantly improves the image qualities of the compressed images compared to the traditional single bit map block truncation coding scheme. In addition, good image qualities of the compressed images are achieved by the second scheme while keeping bit rates low. (C) 2014 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)

In this paper, an efficient and embedded wavelet based color image coding technique having low complexity is proposed. The key idea is the use of block-tree hierarchical structure, due to which the proposed technique has the best features of both block and tree based wavelet image coding methods simultaneously. The proposed technique integrates the set partitioning strategies of hierarchical trees and blocks into a single algorithm, resulting in significant improvement in the coding efficiency, reduced computational complexity and reduced memory requirement. The block-tree structure of the luminance and the chrominance planes are linked in such a way that the insignificant sets of the three planes at correspondingly same locations are sorted together. The proposed coder is compared with similar existing techniques on number of test images. The simulation results show the performance improvement in coding efficiency, reduction in computational complexity and dynamic memory to store the lists over the existing techniques. Therefore, the proposed coding technique is quite attractive for image communication or image data browsing over wireless lines using modern day power-limited mobile/portable devices.

A new color image coding technique is proposed in this paper. The technique is based on the efficient grey-scaled wavelet-based image coding, the context adaptive wavelet difference reduction - CAWDR. The coder exploits not only compactness and self-similarities of wavelet transform in each color component, but also the dependency between the color components. The context adaptive arithmetic coder is implemented to the encoded bit stream. The significant coefficient quantizations for all color components are performed before the refinement pass in each bit-plane. This single bit stream of encoded image has embedded property and exact rate control without explicit information. The performance comparison is also presented in the paper. The proposed coder typically has 0.3 - 1 dB higher average PSNR than that of JPEG2000.
