Sending a Bivariate Gaussian source Over a Gaussian MAC With Feedback

We study the power-versus-distortion tradeoff for the transmission of a memoryless bivariate Gaussian source over a two-to-one Gaussian multiple-access channel with perfect causal feedback. In this problem, each of two separate transmitters observes a different component of a memoryless bivariate Gaussian source as well as the feedback from the channel output of the previous time-instants. Based on the observed source sequence and the feedback, each transmitter then describes its source component to the common receiver via an average-power constrained Gaussian multiple-access channel. From the resulting channel output, the receiver wishes to reconstruct each source component with the least possible expected squared-error distortion. We study the set of distortion pairs that can be achieved by the receiver on the two source components. We present sufficient conditions and necessary conditions for the achievability of a distortion pair. These conditions are expressed in terms of the source correlation and of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the channel. In several cases the necessary conditions and sufficient conditions are shown to agree. In particular, we show that if the channel SNR is below a certain threshold, then an uncoded transmission scheme that ignores the feedback is optimal. Thus, below this SNR-threshold, feedback is useless. We also derive the optimal high-SNR asymptotics.

Distributed source coding for sensor networks

In recent years, sensor research has been undergoing a quiet revolution, promising to have a significant impact throughout society that could quite possibly dwarf previous milestones in the information revolution. Realizing the great promise of sensor networks requires more than a mere advance in individual technologies. It relies on many components working together in an efficient, unattended, comprehensible, and trustworthy manner. One of the enabling technologies in sensor networks is the distributed source coding (DSC), which refers to the compression of the multiple correlated sensor outputs that does not communicate with each other. DSC allows a many-to-one video coding paradigm that effectively swaps encoder-decoder complexity with respect to conventional video coding, thereby representing a fundamental concept shift in video processing. This article has presented an intensive discussion on two DSC techniques, namely Slepian-Wolf coding and Wyner-Ziv coding. The Slepian and Wolf coding have theoretically shown that separate encoding is as efficient as joint coding for lossless compression in channel coding.

Scalable audio coding for compression and loss resilient streaming

Current popular Internet audio streaming solutions impose a division between source coding (provided, for example, by MPEG layer III) and channel coding, typically accomplished in the server by means of packet re-transmission. A novel joint source and channel coder that provides packet-loss recovery and continuous bitrate scalability is presented. These functionalities are well suited to streaming audio over third and future generation wireless broadband networks.

Soft-decision demodulation design for COVQ over white, colored, and ISI Gaussian channels

In this work, the design of a q-bit (scalar and vector) soft-decision demodulator for Gaussian channels with binary phase-shift keying modulation is investigated. The demodulator is used in conjunction with a soft-decision channel-optimized vector quantization (COVQ) system. The COVQ is constructed for an expanded (q > 1) discrete channel consisting of the concatenation of the modulator, the Gaussian channel, and the demodulator. It is found that as the demodulator resolution q increases, the capacity of the expanded channel increases, resulting in an improvement of the COVQ performance. Consequently, the soft-decision demodulator is designed to maximize the capacity of the expanded channel. Three Gaussian channel models are considered as follows: 1) additive white Gaussian noise channels;2) additive colored Gaussian noise channels;and 3) Gaussian channels with intersymbol interference. Comparisons are made with a) hard-decision COVQ systems, b) COVQ systems which utilize interleaving, and c) an unquantized (q = infinity) soft-decision decoder proposed by Skoglund and Hedelin. It is shown that substantial improvements can be achieved over COVQ systems which utilize hard-decision demodulation and/or channel interleaving. The performance of the proposed COVQ system is comparable with the system by Skoglund and Hedelin-though its computational complexity is substantially less.

Exponential Golomb and Rice Error Correction Codes for Generalized Near-Capacity Joint source and channel coding

The recently proposed unary error correction (UEC) and Elias gamma error correction (EGEC) codes facilitate the near-capacity joint source and channel coding (JSCC) of symbol values selected from large alphabets at a low complexity. Despite their large alphabet, these codes were only designed for a limited range of symbol value probability distributions. In this paper, we generalize the family of UEC and EGEC codes to the class of rice and exponential Golomb error correction codes, which have a much wider applicability, including the symbols produced by the H.265 video codec, the letters of the English alphabet, and in fact any arbitrary monotonic unbounded source distributions. Furthermore, the practicality of the proposed codes is enhanced to allow a continuous stream of symbol values to be encoded and decoded using only fixed-length system components. We explore the parameter space to offer beneficial tradeoffs between error correction capability, decoding complexity, as well as transmission-energy, -duration, and -bandwidth over a wide range of operating conditions. In each case, we show that our codes offer significant performance improvements over the best of several state-of-the-art benchmarkers. In particular, our codes achieve the same error correction capability, as well as transmission energy, transmission duration, and transmission bandwidth as a variable length error-correction code benchmarker, while reducing the decoding complexity by an order of magnitude. In comparison with the best of the other JSCC and separate source and channel coding benchmarkers, our codes consistently offer E-b/N-0 gains of between 0.5 and 1.0 dB which only appear to be the modest, because the system operates close to capacity. These improvements are achieved for free, since they are not achieved at the cost of increasing transmission energy, transmission duration, transmission bandwidth, or decoding complexity.

Codeword averaged density evolution for distributed joint source and channel coding with decoder side information

The authors consider applying the systematic low-density parity-check codes with the parity based approach to the lossless (or near lossless) distributed joint source channel coding (DJSCC) with the decoder side information for the non-uniform sources over the asymmetric memoryless transmission channel. By using an equivalent channel coding model, which consists of two parallel subchannels: a correlation and a transmission sub-channel, respectively, they derive the codeword averaged density evolution (DE) for the DJSCC with the decoder side information for the asymmetrically correlated non-uniform sources over the asymmetric memoryless transmission channel. A new code ensemble definition of the irregular codes is introduced to distinguish between the source and the parity variable nodes, respectively. Extensive simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the codeword averaged DE.

Optimum linear decoding of vector quantisation transmitted over a CDMA channel

The problem of joint source-channel and multiuser decoding for code division multiple access channels is considered. The block source-channel encoder is defined by a vector quantiser (VQ). The jointly optimum solution to such a problem has been considered before, but its extremely high complexity makes it impractical for systems with medium to large number of users and/or medium to large size of VQ codebook. Instead, the optimum linear decoder with a much lower complexity that minimises the mean-squared error is introduced. The optimum linear decoder is soft in the sense that it utilises all the soft information available at the receiver. Analytical and simulation results show that at low channel signal-to-noise ratio region, the proposed decoder's performance is almost the same as that of the jointly optimum decoder and significantly better than that of the tandem approaches that use separate multiuser detection and table-lookup decoding.

Optimal and robust communication for a uniform source

A communication system based on the joint source-channel coding principle is proposed, where a fixed-rate source encoder is used to avoid the error propagation effect as experienced when variable length coding is used and thus gain system robustness. An explicit expression of the mean square error (MSE) distortion of the system for a uniform source is derived. We provide an algorithm to achieve the optimal solution by investigating the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) condition. The numerical results show that the overall performance of the proposed system is close to the performance of the entropy coded scalar quantiser (ECSQ) system established by A. Gyorgy and T. Under for almost all rate region. A 0.176-bits-per-sample performance loss is found for the worst case by comparing our considered system and ECSQ system. An observation resembling the finding by V. Goya1 et al. is that in the low rate region, there exist certain regimes in which the proposed system outperforms the ECSQ system. Finally, the proposed system outperforms the equal rate system with a large margin.

Lossy transmission of correlated sources over multiple-access wiretap channels

In this study, the authors study lossy communication of correlated sources over a multiple-access wiretap channel (MAC-WT). Consider a system with two transmitters, a receiver and an eavesdropper. There are two correlated sources where each of them is observed by the corresponding transmitter, separately. Each transmitter wishes to describe its source sequence to the receiver with a desired distortion. The sources need to be kept secret from the eavesdropper. They find an achievable region for the MAC-WT with correlated sources by separation. A joint source-channel coding scheme for the MAC-WT is also proposed. They consider lossy communication of a bivariate Gaussian source over Gaussian MAC-WT (GMAC-WT). They propose a separation-based achievable scheme for the GMAC-WT. An achievable region for the GMAC-WT based on uncoded transmission is also found. They compare the separate and the uncoded schemes for the symmetric GMAC-WT, where the same constraint on the power of each transmitter is imposed and the same distortion on each source is achieved. For another case of source correlation coefficient, they compare the separate, uncoded and hybrid schemes. They obtain outer bounds to the rate-distortion-equivocation region of: (i) the degraded MAC-WT where the output at the eavesdropper is a degraded version of the output at the receiver, (ii) the GMAC-WT with independent sources and (iii) the symmetric GMAC-WT when the correlation of the sources is maximum. Optimal regions for some cases are established.

Dynamic source-channel coding for estimation and control over binary symmetric channels

The authors study causal dynamic source-channel codes for mean-square stabilisation of a linear plant with random initial state, over binary symmetric channels (BSCs). A binary expansion source coding scheme and two types of channel coding schemes are investigated: (i) dynamic repetition encoding under sequential majority logic decoding, and (ii) dynamic Fountain encoding under sequential BP decoding. The coding schemes are first analysed for an open-loop system, where the goal is to transmit a real-valued source over BSCs with the objective of minimising end-to-end mean-square error distortion. They derive upper- and lower bounds on the achievable distortion which is a function of time. Based on these distortion bounds, they show that the dynamic Fountain codes are able to stabilise (in mean-square sense) an unstable linear plant over BSCs.
