Joint source-channel and multiuser decoding for Rayleigh fading CDMA channels

We consider joint source-channel and multiuser decoding for frequency-selective Rayleigh fading code-division multiple-access channels. The block source-channel encoder is defined by a vector quantizer, We investigate optimal (minimum mean-square error) decoding and "user-separated" decoding of lower complexity, The studied decoders are soft in the sense that they utilize all soft information available at the receiver. Simulations indicate significant performance gains of the introduced decoders compared with a tandem approach that uses maximum-likelihood multiuser detection plus table-lookup decoding.

As the use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices for monitoring purposes becomes ubiquitous, the efficiency of sensor communication is a major issue for the modern Internet. channel coding is less efficient for extremely short packets, and traditional techniques that rely on source compression require extensive signaling or pre-existing knowledge of the source dynamics. In this work, we propose an encoding and decoding scheme that learns source dynamics online using a Hidden Markov Model (HMM), puncturing a short packet code to outperform existing compression-based approaches. Our approach shows significant performance improvements for sources that are highly correlated in time, with no additional complexity on the sender side.

We consider a line network of nodes, connected by additive white noise channels, equipped with local feedback. We study the velocity at which information spreads over this network. For transmission of a data packet, we give an explicit positive lower bound on the velocity, for any packet size. Furthermore, we consider streaming, that is, transmission of data packets generated at a given average arrival rate. We show that a positive velocity exists as long as the arrival rate is below the individual Gaussian channel capacity, and provide an explicit lower bound. Our analysis involves applying pulse-amplitude modulation to the data (successively in the streaming case), and using linear mean-squared error estimation at the network nodes. For general white noise, we derive exponential error-probability bounds. For single-packet transmission over channels with (sub-)Gaussian noise, we show a doubly-exponential behavior, which reduces to the celebrated Schalkwijk-Kailath scheme when considering a single node. Viewing the constellation as an "analog source", we also provide bounds on the exponential decay of the mean-squared error of source transmission over the network.

Image coding using robust quantization for noisy digital transmission

A robust quantizer is developed for encoding memoryless sources and transmission over the binary symmetric channel (BSC). The system combines channel optimized scalar quantization (COSQ) with all-pass filtering, the latter performed using a binary phase-scrambling/descrambling method. Applied to a broad class of sources, the robust quantizer achieves the same performance as the Gaussian COSQ for the memoryless Gaussian source. This quantizer is used in image coding for transmission over a BSC, The peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) performance degrades gracefully as the channel bit error rate increases.

Flexible iterative receiver architecture for wireless sensor networks: a joint source and channel coding design example

Due to their computational complexity, iterative decoder components such as source and channel decoders are usually implemented using specialised dedicated hardware. This leads to the scenario where each different iterative decoder component of the receiver requires its own hardware. Due to their relatively high complexity, many capacity-approaching techniques proposed in the literature have not yet been invoked in wireless sensor network applications, despite their potential benefits of facilitating a reduced transmission power or extended communication range. Against this background, the authors propose an energy-efficient architecture comprised of multiple computation unit (CU), which is sufficiently flexible for accommodating different iterative decoder components using the same hardware. In this study, the flexible architecture is applied to Joint source and channel coding (JSCC), comprising the Unary Error Correction (UEC) code, a turbo code and an iterative demodulator. The authors conceive a flexible technique for controlling the hardware, which supports a high hardware-exploitation ratio for the CU, reaching a utilisation of 88%, compared with 68% achieved in similar solutions reported in the open literature.

This paper proposes a technique to compress the data with equal length code words. A novel source coding technique, multiple label mapping (MLM), is introduced. With MLM it is possible to produce a source code which uses equal length code words. Moreover, it is shown that with the MLM technique, it is possible to achieve near limit compression without using variable length coding (VLC). However this requires that the source probability grouping is performed so that after MLM each code word has almost equal appearance probability, and that full a priori feedback is available. Numerical results demonstrate proper operability of the proposed system.

We propose a compression/transmission scheme that allows the quality of the reconstructed signal to gracefully degrade as the channel quality drops, as well as steadily improve with the channel improvement. The main idea is to partition the channel and/or network resources into m units (e. g., sub-bands, packets) and compress the source independently m times to perfectly match single unit resources, thus creating m independently distorted source versions. Consequently, we create a multiple-description, joint source-channel like architecture, that enables efficient reconstruction starting from a single received description with improvements onward. We further split the compression rate in two parts, allocating one to a rate-distortion optimal encoder, and the other to transmitting uncoded source symbols. We show how this architecture can easily leverage modularity in terms of adjustable rate-splitting ratio and the maximum number of descriptions, e. g., through software parameters, to simultaneously and robustly (i.e. avoiding the cliff effect) achieve operating points close to rate-distortion curve for many channel states. We demonstrate how statistical description of channel states (or performance statistics of content delivery network) can be used to set the two parameters constructively in terms of converging to optimal operation in the range of interest.

Underwater communication is a promising technology to provide ubiquitous network connectivity, where acoustic waves are used as the primary carrier for long-range communication. It has been a challenging research topic to efficiently transmit images with underwater acoustic communication (UAC), due to its inherently narrow bandwidth, strong signal attenuation, time-varying multipath propagation, and low propagation speed. In this paper, we present a new approach to addressing these limitations in UAC, namely the joint source-channel coding and modulation (JSCCM) based on a deep neural network (DNN). We develop a training method of DNN-based encoder and decoder, which directly encode/decode image-pixel values to modulated symbols, unlike conventional separation-based source and channel coding and modulation. Through numerical simulations, the deep JSCCM is confirmed to achieve significantly higher data-rate than conventional schemes.

We consider the source-channel separation architecture for lossy source coding in communication networks. It is shown that the separation approach is optimal when the memoryless sources at source nodes are arbitrarily correlated, each of which is to be reconstructed at possibly multiple destinations within certain distortions, and the channels in this network are synchronized, orthogonal and memoryless (i.e., noisy graphs). The extracted pure network source-coding problem has to incorporate user interactions and the corresponding causality constraints, which suggests a distinct research direction into interactive network source coding that has not received much attention in the literature. The separation result in this paper is a companion to results of a similar flavor established recently in [11] for the case of independent sources over communication networks with more general multiuser channels.
