We describe the design and implementation of real-time data management services. These services combine technologies developed in the context of real-time distributed object management, object DBMSs, and scheduling. This combination simplifies many of the services, and produces a result which is greater than the sum of its parts, because it can be used to improve the portability and flexibility of real-time applications.

A powerful method for the modeling of the task processing of anti-aircraft tactic command and control systems (AATCCS) via stochastic Petri net (SPN) tool isproposed and discussed. The principle of the analysis of task processing capacity for a discrete event system based on SPN model is established. The task processing model of a generic typical anti-aircraft tactic C2 systems with two-level command centers is built, and the procedure to the analysis of the maximum information processing capacity of the systems is developed. The method and results show their promise in their applications to real C2 system design.

It is shown how a recently developed methodology called hierarchical process modeling (HPM) can be utilized to improve the reliability of submarine command and control systems (CCSs). In HPM the subsystems under study are represented by verbs, and the flows between them are represented by nouns. The model is made up of a series of diagrams, all of which carry the CCS label and a number identifying its position in the model hierarchy. The diagrams also give the date the diagram was completed and the revision number for this particular figure. Two types of diagrams are included in the model: a context diagram and an internal structure diagram. The context diagram that defines the relationships between the CCS system and its environment. The latter includes all activities that are outside CCS but relevant to its activities. The internal structure diagram provides a detailed description of the inner workings of the CCS. The methodology is useful for analyzing and improving current systems and for designing future systems.

In this paper we propose an efficient location management scheme for large amounts of mobile users and other objects in distributed, service-oriented systems. To efficiently observe geographic areas of interest (AOI) in command and control information systems (C2IS), i.e. to compute the AOI within a C2IS, we introduce the concept of region services. These services contain all objects of a fixed geographic region. To handle in-homogenous distributions of objects we propose a combination of regular and hierarchical regions. A user-specific C2IS instance can now directly and efficiently establish subscription-relations to the relevant objects around its AOI in order to obtain information about the position, status and behaviour of these objects. If objects including the current user itself now dynamically change their position we merely have to update the information relations to those few objects that enter or leave a region within the AOI, instead of having to consider all objects within the global information grid. Region services thus do not only improve the efficiency for generating a static common operational picture but can also handle any dynamic changes of object positions.
