A Simultaneous Approach to Improve Progress Payments System Using a common data environment

The success of a construction project depends on the efficiency in the processing, management, and payment of contractor progress claims regarding the activities that have been executed. The payments are made at intervals during the construction works of a project. These payments made to the contractor upon completion of a section of work, usually on a monthly basis, are known as progress payments. However, these progress payments are poorly managed, resulting in the contractor receiving monies late and, therefore, affecting the contractor's cash flow. This poor management of payments is caused mainly by inadequate information management, poor communication, lack of collaboration, failure to agree on measurements of work done, and corruption. Thus, this study proposes a framework based on the common data environment (CDE) to effectively process and manage contractors' progress payments. The study adopted a bibliometric and systematic literature review to identify current trends, scope, screen, select, and qualify prior knowledge on the subject. The findings reveal that implementing an effective CDE framework can promote efficient information management, communication, collaboration, and transparency. However, an effective CDE framework is dependent on training, policies, having a quality assurance team, and the adoption of appropriate digital tools to ensure the contractors' progress payments are professionally managed. This study adds to the body of knowledge on the development of the CDE framework to manage progress payments and improve project success. The paper suggests that the implementation of a CDE is critical, but it is only effective if the suggested framework is applied.

Coupling BIM and detailed modelica simulations of HVAC systems in a common data environment

In current building design practices, the operation and performance of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are rarely documented in detail. This is mainly caused by the manual burden of generating detailed HVAC simulation models. To lower the barrier for detailed HVAC simulations, this paper presents an automated toolchain that generates and simulates models in Modelica language utilizing building information structured in a web-based common data environment. This approach differs from previous approaches by its focus on HVAC systems and integration with a common data environment over file-based BIM, which increases interoperability and allows users to run simulation studies in the cloud. The tool successfully generated and simulated a model of the HVAC systems in a small building under ideal and faulty operation of the heating system and thus demonstrated a fully interoperable data exchange between a common data environment and a simulation environment while showcasing the potential of analyzing HVAC systems with Modelica.

The paper is focused on exploration of selected common data environment functions supporting procurement processes of subcontractors. As common data environments are becoming widespread within the construction industry, they must provide all project stakeholders with necessary functions to support their business processes. Generally speaking, common data environment is a digital space, where project stakeholders can share data and information between themselves. However, current common data environments can offer more functions than just a storage and a way of sharing data and information. They can provide their users with workflow and status management for setting up approval processes, mobile applications for monitoring construction site progress, as well as functions for managing BIM projects. That is why it should also be possible to manage procurement processes of subcontractors within existing common data environments. This paper's focus is to analyse selected common data environments and their available functions supporting procurement processes of subcontractors. Information presented in this paper was obtained from online sources, also questionnaires with predefined questions were sent to CDE representatives and videoconferences were conducted with CDE representatives. Main goal of this paper is to analyse, if selected common data environments have available functions for managing procurement processes of subcontractors. Identified functions are evaluated in accordance with current praxis of managing procurement processes of subcontractors for building construction projects, which also involve development of building projects in rural areas. The paper also describes strong and weak points of identified functions.

Nowadays, it is unquestionable to consider BIM when dealing with a project in the AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) sector. BIM is more and more present in the construction industry due to the technological evolution and the challenges that appear every day. The use of BIM provides advantages such as: reliable and accurate information, simple and instant communication, updated register of actions, error reduction, teams connection, etc. BIM methodology involves collaboration between different disciplines and people, allowing them to have controlled access to the project data depending on their role. From this collaboration between stakeholders arises the need for a common data environment (CDE). This collaborative platform makes it possible to work on the different parts and disciplines of a project on a distinct federated model at the same time along its entire life cycle. The main goal of this article is to establish the minimum requirements for a CDE, as well as to describe the functionalities of the collaborative platform VIRCORE. BIM for facilities management: A framework and a common data environment using open standards

BIM for Facilities Management (BIM for FM) is a relatively new and growing topic of inquiry aiming to fulfil the informational needs of the operational phase of assets within increasingly digitalised project workflows. Research into the management of structured (i.e. graphical and non-graphical) and unstructured data (i.e. documents) has largely focused on design and construction phases. Information management in facilities management and maintenance is still challenged by the lack of a structured framework that can simultaneously fulfil these three capabilities: (1) the delivery of information models (i.e. Asset Information Models) from distributed data sources;(2) the validation of these information models against the requirements;and (3) the use of their information in facilities management (e.g. operation and maintenance). This research aims to develop and test a framework and a prototype common data environment (CDE) to achieve these three capabilities. The framework and the developed CDE are entirely based on use open standards and integration of existing technologies. A requirements model, underpinning the framework and the CDE was developed during three iterative stages of interviews -in line with the adopted Grounded Theory and Design Science Research methodologies- with industry experts and through a three-stage coding process at each iteration. The framework and the CDE were tested in pilot demonstrations with a use case focused on preventive and reactive maintenance. The testing demonstrated that the implementation of 'BIM for FM' processes is feasible with the proposed framework and CDE relying entirely on open standards and existing technologies. Some additional requirements for BIM for FM processes were also identified during the verification sessions with industry and are proposed for future research.

A common data environment for HVAC design and engineering

The Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry is transitioning toward using cloud-based common data environments (CDEs) with interlinked BIM models. A CDE that engages all stakeholders of the building's design, construction, and operation phases represents the outset of BIM maturity level 3. This article introduces a CDE called Virtual Commissioning (VC), capable of commissioning an HVAC system before the physical commissioning of the HVAC system. The FSC diagram is introduced, to represent an HVAC BIM model within the VC CDE, and the Revit to FSC exporter, to serialize an HVAC object model from Revit to the FSC diagram. Three microservices were developed to exemplify the ease of developing independently scalable solutions for the VC CDE. Furthermore, the article proves that Modelica simulations can be run, using the microservice architecture of the CDE. To test the robustness of the system architecture for the CDE, two example models were introduced, one simple and one with a high level of complexity. Transferring the example models from Revit to the VC CDE was successful. Finally, in the roadmap for future development, it is proposed that future work should focus on using the CDE for advanced hydraulic simulations, using Modelica and Spawn-of-EnergyPlus.

Decoding ISO 19650 Through Process Modelling for Information Management and Stakeholder Communication in BIM

Poor information management is predominant in construction projects and tends to have a negative effect on project outcomes. The use of technology, in particular building information modelling (BIM), has been promoted to address information management issues. However, the adoption of BIM is fraught with challenges, such as a lack of standardisation and difficulties in effectively adopting standards such as ISO 19650. This research aims to deepen knowledge and improve the management of BIM standards, particularly in using ISO 19650 to collaboratively deliver construction projects by applying process modelling techniques. By employing a mixed-methods approach that combines document analysis and qualitative interviews, this study critically examines the principles and requirements of ISO 19650 and their practical implications. It focuses on how process modelling can clarify complex concepts and improve information management. The findings indicate that process modelling significantly aids in comprehending ISO 19650, making its intricate concepts more accessible to multidisciplinary teams, enhancing stakeholder communication, improving project execution efficiency, and reducing errors and rework. Furthermore, this research emphasises the need to distinguish ISO 19650-derived elements from those adapted from other sources to ensure transparency and integrity in project management practices. The main implications of this study are two-fold. From a research perspective, it contributes to the academic discourse by addressing a critical gap in the literature, which has largely focused on BIM technology implementation rather than the processes and workflows necessary for effective standard adoption. From a practical perspective, this study promotes transparency and integrity in project management practices, enabling organisations to adopt and adhere to standardised practices more effectively in collaborative environments.

Digitalisation of the construction industry is exposing it to cybersecurity risks. All phases of construction can be affected. Particularly vulnerable are information-intensive phases such as building design and building operation. Construction is among the last industries that are discovering its cybersecurity risks and can rely on frameworks developed for other contexts. In this paper, we evaluate the cybersecurity risks of the design phase of construction using the Cyber Assessment Framework from the National Cybersecurity Centre (NCSC) of the UK. The goal of this study is twofold. First, to examine cybersecurity risks themselves, and second, to evaluate the applicability of the NCSC framework for construction to see if and how construction is specific. The analysis shows that the cybersecurity risks follow the information impact curve that has been motivating the introduction of Building Information Modelling (BIM). The framework is applicable but is weak in addressing the specifics of the construction industrial ecosystem, which involves a multitude of dynamically connected actors, their overlapping authorities, and conflicting motives. It is suggested that a specialized construction-related framework should be developed.

A CATEGORICAL APPROACH FOR DEFINING DIGITAL TWINS IN THE AECO INDUSTRY

Operations and Maintenance (O&M) costs account for 60-80% of a facility's lifecycle costs. Using Digital Twins (DTs) can aid in making O&M more effective and efficient, leading to time and cost savings. The concept of DT started in the Aerospace domain, and other industries eventually adopted it. DTs are a new concept to the Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operations (AECO) Industry, and there is a lot of confusion around this concept. The purpose of this paper is to provide a DT definition along with a classification structure to create a common ground for understanding DTs in the AECO industry, which leads to easier adoption of DTs. A systematic literature review was completed to identify the existing DT definitions and classification approaches. Then, through a content analysis, the core components of definitions were extracted. The identified components were used to develop a comprehensive and inclusive DT definition for the AECO industry, using the domain language. In a similar fashion, existing DT classification structures were studied, and their components were identified through content analysis. Using the identified components, a DT classification structure was proposed for the AECO industry using domain concepts and terms. The results were validated and refined through a series of semi -structured expert interviews and surveys. Interviewees and survey participants comprised DT experts from academia and industry with diverse backgrounds. The components of the proposed DT definition include virtual representation, data connection between physical and digital entities, analysis, actuation, and frequency of updates. The classification structure consisted of three DT categories, namely Digital Twin Prototype (DTP), Digital Shadow (DS), and Cyber-Physical System (CPS).

BIM pilot project Auenbach viaduct - Innovative design methods in bridge construction

Auenbach viaduct was chosen by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) as the first of four pilot projects for the implementation of design and construction processes with the aid of the Building Information Modelling (BIM) method. In the course of the preliminary design phase this project's existing designs were to be subjected to an extended economic feasibility study. The structure leads the Federal Highway B 107 across the Auenbach valley, a service road and several tracks on the Dresden-Werdau railway line. Originally the structure was intended to span the entire valley with a total length of about 273 m. During the overall optimisation of the alignment in position and elevation the structure was separated into two single structures linked by an intermediate embankment. In the frame of the pilot project a coordinated complete model was prepared. The aim was to integrate all the project planning models for engineering structures as well as the models of the specialist planners for traffic facilities, subsoil and environment in accordance with the design status in each case. The results of this service phase were provided to the further BIM processes as an object-based, coordinated 3-D complete model. By means of a model-based time schedule it was then possible to perform a complex analysis of the model data (e.g. quantities, costs, deadlines, collision detection, etc) and carry out optimisations. The objective of the intended continuation of the pilot project is the automated, model-based elaboration of the final design and tender for the structure. With the digitalization of construction the design and implementation process is undergoing a fundamental methodological transformation. From the standpoint of the owner DEGES and the project planner OBERMEYER the effects expected as a result of establishing the BIM method should be investigated, checked and assessed.
