Omnipresent Ethernet was proposed as a technology solution for achieving end-to-end communication using an-all-Ethernet methodology. The journey traversed by Ethernet from CSMA/CD to Carrier Ethernet has led to the development of a plethora of technologies, some of which when coalesced together, lead to the Omnipresent Ethernet framework. By making use of network interconnection topology, we are able to achieve end-to-end communication using the all-Ethernet paradigm - Omnipresent Ethernet. In fact, the Omnipresent Ethernet solution is able to demonstrate not just layer-2 functions but also higher layer functions such as routing, error control and session support. By collapsing all the layers into a single layer and achieving the much desired scalability the Omnipresent Ethernet solution has the potential to revolutionize the protocol stack. The advantages of this approach have shown to yield cost and performance (speed, scale, simplicity, ubiquity and backward compatibility) benefits. The Omnipresent Ethernet concept has been studied and demonstrated as a pragmatic solution. The control plane is one aspect of the Omnipresent Ethernet framework that has yet not been the focus of investigation. In this paper, we discuss the role of the control plane as well as how different control plane tasks are performed. Simulation results validate our proposed control plane architecture.

A method for selecting a forward error correcting (FEC) code for the Advanced Train controlsystem (ATCS) radio data link is described. The application of the ATCS and the performance issues involved in selecting a code are detailed. On the basis of the data, the ATCS communications Component Specification Drafting Committee chose the Reed-Solomon 2 code as the FEC code for ATCS. This choice was based on best overall performance in providing throughput and good performance relative to other codes on other metrics.< >

We study the issue of asymptotic stability of a family of rate control algorithms with communication delays between network elements and extend our earlier results: First, we derive delay-dependent stability conditions with a family of well-known utility and resource price functions when a finite upper bound is known on the feedback delay. These conditions are shown to be consistent with known stability conditions in two extreme cases-no delay or an arbitrarily large delay. Secondly, we provide a lower bound on the convergence rate with the same utility and resource price functions when delay-independent stability conditions hold.

Aspects of the control and data acquisition system of the RF Xnuclear fusion experiment are dealt with. The system is built around a local area network that connects programmable controllers, minicomputers with CAMAC front-end, and personal computes as operator consoles. These three types of nodes use compatible software that contains a set of low-level routines corresponding to levels one to four of the ISO OSI (Open systems Interconnection) recommendations. A detailed description is provided of how the overall system synchronization is achieved. All subsystems (computer and programmable-controller based) follow the same state transition diagram (scheduler) and are coordinated by a supervisor system based on a programmable controller. South Carolina Electric and Gas is currently performing direct load controlcommunications over power lines without using a power line carrier. This is the result of testing a load management system that combines the existing substation solid-state recording with voltage regulation capability. Using the solid-state recorder's extended control functions, the existing substation tap changer, a new patent-pending power line communications technique, and a patented voltage-step load control receiver, the system extends normal two-way communication between the utility operations and the substation with a one-way power line link to virtually any load. By varying the voltage level slightly, the system digitizes up to 32 different load control messages. The new voltage-step communication technique uses the substation's load tap changer to communicate one-way with the receivers over existing power lines. South Carolina Electric and Gas and the manufacturer have been performing a two-phase test of the load controlsystem. Phase one testing showed that the percentage of successful load control message reception was 98%. Phase two testing is still in progress. Results to date show no deterioration of reception or equipment. Conclusions thus far are that the load management system is compatible with all installed utility equipment, and offers reliable direct load control.

A Markov process model of an externally controlled two-stage manufacturing system is presented. The objective is to examine the effect on system performance of the contention for the resources of the control and communication equipment in the manufacturing system. In the system under consideration, when a new part enters either of the stages, a request-for-instruction message is sent to the control equipment. The stage will then remain idle until a control-instruction message is received from the control equipment. Only then can processing on the part begin. The control and communication equipment is modeled as a queuing system that receives the request-for-instruction messages from the machines, processes these messages, and returns control-instruction messages to the appropriate machine. Part and message processing times can be different and are assumed to have exponential distributions. This model is analyzed to obtain an analytic expression for the throughput (production rate in parts per unit time) of the manufacturing system. Numerical examples that illustrate the effect of model parameters on the system throughput are also presented.

In frequency-reuse communicationsystems using orthogonally polarized waves, depolarization due mainly to rain and Faraday rotation (in satellite systems) reduces channel isolation. The controlsystem described, incorporating a network suggested by T. S. Chu, automatically compensates for cross-polarization coupling without using iterative methods or computations. control voltages are generated on the receive side by phase-sensitive demodulation of beacons contained in the communication channels. Slightly modified conventional tracking receivers may be used for the demodulation. The system can be used for the reception of dual linear or dual circular polarizations without modification. An analysis of the controlsystem behavior is given and a method for automatic initial balancing of the systemindependent of its initial state-is proposed.
