The electrical circuits and their Electronic control Units (ECUs) in buses and coaches are essential for their good working. Drive, braking, suspension, door opening, security and communication devices must be integrated in a reliable and real time information system. The industrial communication networks or fieldbuses are a good solution to implement networked control systems for the onboard electronics in the public transport buses and coaches. The authors are working in the design of multiplexed solutions based on fieldbuses to integrate the body and chassis functions of city public transport buses. An example for the EURO5 model of the Scania manufacturer is reported in this paper. The authors are also working in the implementation of new modules based on FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) that can be used in these networked control systems.

In order to realize communication and broadcasting of haptic information, bilateral control with communication time delay is important element. The paper proposes a novel bilateral control method for communication time delay. To compensate the effect of communication time delay, the proposed method applies a motion copying system. The motion copying system is able to save and reproduce motion of human operator. The reproduced position and force by the motion copying system corresponds to saved position and force. The motion copying system copies local motion to other side, in order to realize compensation of communication time delay. The paper confirms that the communication time delay compensation using the motion copying system normally operates. The viability of the proposed method is confirmed by experiments.

The superconducting stellarator experiment W7-X has a control system which has been designed for steady state operation as well as for pulsed operation. Each technical component and each "diagnostic" system including its data acquisition will have its own control system permitting autonomous operation for commissioning and testing. During the experimental sessions the activity of these components will be coordinated by a Central control system and the machine runs more or less automatically with predefined programs. A local control component has a number of internal and external communication interfaces which are necessary for data exchange with the operational management system, the segment control system and with the safety system. These interfaces are used to send and receive messages of different types (commands, status information, raw data, and analyzed data). The paper presents a description of the structure of a local control component and a discussion of its communication interfaces.

A home network system guarantees to provide a family with a safe, economical and healthy life, and it services domestic safety, control of instruments, controllable energy and health monitoring by using home appliances. Our studies designed the broadband power line communication (BPLC) home controller which could save much cost at a network infrastructure by using the existing power line at home. The BPLC home controllers could control various domestic appliances such as a digital door-lock, a boiler, an oven and etc., because these controllers had various I/O specifications. We selected the Jini technology surrogate architecture as a home network middleware for our system, this technology was designed to access a home network system without a limitation of the devices. And the client application program of the system managed and monitored the BPLC home controller via Web browser. In this paper we implemented the home security system using the single BPLC home controller.

Technological advances have enabled distributed control systems to be implemented via networks. This allows feedback control loops to be closed over a communication channel. This paper develops a control system with high speed and real time communication links. The two-degree-of-freedom control is utilized in this servo control system and delta-sigma modulation is employed to compress data and transmit the signal over the transmission channels between the controller and the servomotor. Simulations and experimental results show that it is possible to compensate the noise in signal transmission channels. In addition, FPGA is used in the control system and the communication system to realize high-speed control system with 0.6 mus sampling period and latency. The data is also compressed and transmitted with FPGA in the experiments

Automation of control and management of a power system substation is becoming more and more popular. Overcoming the initial hiccups in its acceptance due to higher costs and apprehensions on reliability, more utilities and industries are keen in exploring this option now. In the scenario of high pressure to improve the efficiency and productivity of the power system substation, substation automation is proving to be a cost-effective solution. With the modern protection relays becoming more powerful, being integrated with more functions, they have the potential to play a key role in implementing control & automation in substations. Finalization of the new communication protocol, IEC61850, for intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), automation and control has become possible, which, when implemented can ensure a reliable and efficient power system. A highly advanced and diversified society has been making a significant impact on the increase in the demand for mobile communications. This paper proposes a new concept of a mobile communication system based on the deployment of decentralized autonomous radio link control with decentralized base stations (DCM system: Decentralized control architecture Mobile communication system). After presenting the service conditions and the system objectives, it gives a description of a basic DCM system, which includes the system configuration, radio system, and control architecture. The concept of autonomous radio link control that embodies the system is then discussed. One specific manifestation called ESCORT, that realizes autonomous radio link control, is then described. The concluding section will show the prospects for future development of this system and discuss additional technical problems that still must be overcome.

Increased availability of electronics at much lower costs have helped to create a new breed of control system components; so called "smart" components, which can perform control responsibilities in the actuator and sensor components as well as in the controller. "Smart" components can communicate bi-directionally in networked control systems. Our results show that an "ideal" system with bidirectional communications is equivalent to a single loop control system in terms of performance. However, performance improvements are possible in "non-ideal" cases. Using bi-directional communications can also improve the control system design process since it facilitates the configuration and re-configuration. Building cost effective modular control systems using bi-directional controls appears increasingly attractive.

An H alpha approach to robust control of bilateral teleoperation systems under communication time-delay is considered and applied on an experimental setup. Using a small gain approach an H alpha controller is first designed in the nominal case and a robust design is then proposed for any communication delay in the case of environment uncertainties. When delay independent stability cannot be achieved, a way to determine the maximal allowed time-delay is provided. Simulation and experimental results are provided.

Due to the low price and robustness resulting from its wide acceptance and deployment, ISO/IEC 8802-3 based Ethernet is becoming the de-facto network in DCS and PLC, and is being attempted to connect field devices. It is difficult to build a real-time field control network based on Ethernet because it has unpredictable delay characteristics due to packet collisions. To resolve this problem, some papers and reports presented the so-called hardware methods to improve real-time performance but they changed the circuits of Ethernet. Some other authors designed the so-called software methods (e.g. static or dynamic traffic smoothers by giving Ethernet packets priority) which only reduced the packet collision without avoiding collision. In addition, these methods are designed based on some presuppositions or preconditions and are difficult to be implemented and used in real control systems. Considering that some real-time packets can be divided in two types: (1) cyclic packets (e.g. measurement and control data) which shall be transferred at each communication cycle, and (2) acyclic packets (e.g. configuring data and alert/alarm data) which are transferred randomly, we define a EPA-based communication Scheduling Management Entity (EPA_CSME) beyond Ethernet MAC protocol referring to ISO/OSI model to avoid collisions in Ethernet system. With the precise time synchronization based on IEC61588 protocol with the same time server, each node has the same absolute time in the whole system.
